Brief YU fashion history
Before the World War II there were only independent tailors in this region, who made clothes after the fashion designers of Paris. Just after the war fashion was not developed because other things were more important for the country. During the 50`s and 60`s young people followed fashion by getting clothes from abroad. At the beginning of the 70`s the golden age of YU fashion began . Big companies like "Kluz " and "Beko " started to practice active fashion marketing . The Association of models was established in Belgrade and Zagreb . Big fashion shows and fairs were organized and they started to make catalogues and commercials . Eminent fashion designers at the time were Aca Joksimovic i Mirjana Maric . At last , in the beginning of the 90`s a number of private agencies were established . Among the first of them were " Click " and " Forma Viva ". New faces and new ways of doing business made the market more dynamic and brought more variety . Also ,some new magazines gave their contribution by providing a lot of room for fashion events in them ( " Ana " , "Profil " , "Dama" etc. ). In 1995 some new agencies were established : "Tattoo" ( now called "Model Tattoo" ) , " Don Fashion" ( now "Factory " ) . New , young fashion designers started to work : Dragana Ognjenovic, SonjaKrstic, Tanja Cicanovic.

43. Fashion History: The Beginning Of Haute Couture
Discover how fashion history shaped many of the clothes and fashionsthat we wear today. Have you ever wondered about fashion history?

Haute Couture Have you ever wondered about fashion history? Like when runway shows came about, why designer clothes are so popular, or even how Paris became the epicenter of fashion instead of, say, London or Madrid? As the fashion world prepares to trot out its latest ready-to-wear collections, now seems an appropriate time to offer a glimpse into this exclusive world. While people have been interested in fashion for thousands of years, the industry we know today did not begin to take shape until around 1850. After hundreds of years of opulent fashions, two things happened concurrently to birth the industry we know as haute couture: the invention of the continuous stitch sewing machine, by Isaac Singer, and the instant popularity of a dressmaker named Charles Frederick Worth. Prior to 1850, 70% percent of all clothes were hand stitched by the people who wore them. Clothes were a commodity item, and their excellence dependent upon the skill of the person who made them. The average housewife styled her clothes after what was acceptable for her climate, her country, and her community standing, so that everyone from the same region pretty much dressed alike. Cut off from outside influence, clothing styles could-and did-remain the same for generations. Today these distinct garbs are often known as a region's "national costume."

Introduction
The benefits of taking Family and Consumer Science classes are it builds self-esteem through the knowledge of applicable skills that can be used in later stages of life, for example, as a vocation or possible career, a better understanding of how clothes are influenced by styles of the past, gain an insight into fashion that will satisfy both immediate and long range goals, improving social skills and decision making skills, selecting appropriate clothing for different occasions, personal satisfaction, and increased understanding of history, literature, and art to build knowledge about artist and designers. In today's society, images of fashion can be seen all over, but are strongly displayed in the media with television, music videos, commercials, and other means. We as people within society are human billboards for companies to display their name and logos. Trends have been set throughout history changing from decade to decade. Society has given the impression that in order to fit in or be cool, you should own and wear designer labels. Those who wear Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klien are more likely to fit in than those who chose to wear no name clothing. We also look to entertainers throughout the media and major fashion trends to determine our look. Being original with style is not as common and trends set back in the 1970's are returning to main stream fashion. Fashion is for everyone, but a sense of style is individual and personal. I believe that if we had a better understanding of fashion history, we would be less likely to follow trends and be trend setters.

But it was not until two hundred years or so ago that the business of designing clothes evolved. Until then, there were no fashion designers - only dressmakers and tailors. The history of the creative or designing aspects of the fashion business is made up of people and personalities. In learning their lives and accomplishments, the development of the industry automatically unfolds. Below are ten fashion personalities without whom fashion will not be as it is today. The 16th Century

With the coming in of the Mughals in the 16th century, yet another stage seems to be reached in the history of Indian costumes. In the first two reigns, those of Babur and Humayun, a strong self-conscious link with outside, with their own heritage in fact, is kept by the Mughals and their nobles in respect of their dress. Babur's references to the dresses that he saw the people of India wear are scanty and not full of any great enthusiasm. In fact ' the dress of the common man in India Babur seems to have viewed with a certain amount of surprise, if not contempt: "Peasants and people of low standing", he says, go about naked. They tie on a thing called languta, a decency-clout which hangs two spans below the navel. From the tie of this pendant decency clout, another clout is passed between (the legs) and made fast behind."

French Designer With MD Makes Fashion History
By Joelle Diderich PARIS, Fed 14 (Reuters) - Young fashion designer Lucie Carrasco had to overcome the usual hurdles to stage her first catwalk show in Paris sleepless nights sketching outfits, searching for financial backers, finding a suitable venue. It's a ruthless world at the best of times, but Carrasco has been forced to deal with an extra challenge. She suffers from muscular dystrophy, a disease that causes the muscles to wither and waste. The 20-year-old's debut in a gilded salon at the opulent Hotel Crillon on Wednesday featured statuesque models in slinky gowns and see-through mini-dresses, and was met with a standing ovation. "Sensuality is very important," the red-haired designer, who is confined to a wheelchair, told reporters after the show. "I was confronted with the problem of beauty at a young age, and it's true that I have always had a passion for beauty."

YSL.
Born in Oran, Algeria in 1936, Yves Mathieu Saint Laurent grew up in the sunlit chi-chi atmosphere of privilege: house servants, canasta parties, luncheons at the yacht club, theater and summers in the villa at Trouville. His father was a successful businessman and his mother, a fixture on the cocktail circuit. Precociously gifted Yves Saint Laurent left his comfortable haute bourgeoisie home in Algeria at age 17 to work for Christian Dior in Paris. When Dior died four years later, Saint Laurent was put in charge. At Dior's funeral in 1957, the young designer made the acquaintance of Pierre BergÈ who eventually became Saint Laurent's lover, alter-ego and the business mastermind of the future YSL empire. Saint Laurent completed six collections for Dior, garnering acclaim for his debut show, in which he unveiled the trapeze dress. Yves Saint Laurent did not officially become YSL until 1961 when, amid much secrecy and rumor, he split with the Dior house to found his own label. He would go on to create fashion history: among his many trailblazing contributions, he ushered in the era of ready-to-wear, introduced pants as evening wear, and was the first to turn street- and peasant-styles into luxury clothing. After Gucci bought the house in 1999, Tom Ford took over the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line, while Yves Saint Laurent still designs the Haute Couture collection.
