Hi Saneters... a comment on a slightly old note.

I think you missed Roberto's key point. What you say is true... many
farmers do not conform to corporate business methods, and therefore do not

profitability.
The point is that there may be something fundamentally wrong with the
system we're using- something that directly conflicts with sustainable ag.
I am happy that farmers don't act like shareholders... Not many NIKE shareholders think on moral or ethical grounds. Maybe they should. Sustainability in agriculture requires that we move beyond the shareholder/CEO mentality, and make decisions not only on the basis of

Framework for farm household-level decision making
Framework for farm household-level decision making
The Farm Household The farm household is the level at which most resource allocation decisions are made. Division of roles and responsibilities among different family members occurs naturally among men, women, productive youth, and the elderly. Based on their respective duties, Farm Management Decisions are made (Part I). These may be broken down into: investment and marketing decisions; and production and conservation decisions. See Fig. 1. Fig. 1: Framework for Analysing Farm Household Decidisions These decisions are influenced by On-Farm Factors (Part 11), and Off-Farm Factors (Part 111). It should be pointed out that people do not use a linear decision making process. Rather, farmers consider many factors simultaneously. The framework is a tool to help understand these complex farm management decisions so that appropriate extension and development strategies can be developed. Box 1 Choice of agricultural enterprises Allocation of labour Allocation of land Allocation of capital Acquisition of inputs Marketing Part I: Farm Management Decisions Investment and marketing decisions Box 1 summarizes some of the key resource allocation decisions faced by farm families. For example, if a need or market opportunity is identified for fuelwood, the family will have to choose what specific tree to plant, who will be responsible for its establishment and maintenance, what land will be used, what investment (labour, money and materials) will be required, and how the products will be marketed.

Jump over Nav Bar search home briefing rooms ... farm financial management farm financial management: overview
The farm business environment is more competitive and more international in scope than ever before. Managers must not only be highly skilled and knowledgeable of production techniques, but have to confront many complex financial decisions. Farming is a business with considerable uncertainty and risk. The major goals of this ERS research program are to provide objective and timely economic analyses of the financial conditions in agriculture, to assess how current and emerging production technologies affect farms and whether these changes pose special risks to farm financial viability, and to determine whether farmers' use of adaptive management strategies contributes to economic success. The dynamic policy and economic environment in which farms operate presents many challenges for successful farm management. Markets have become more international, market linkages are more formalized, and farms continue to be more industrialized. The 1996 FAIR Act has eliminated links between income support and farm prices and lessened institutional constraints on individual farm decisionmaking. As a result, farmers are confronting greater risks and greater flexibility to make changes in their business plans and organizations.

Farmers, Ranchers, and Agricultural Managers
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Modern farming requires college training in agriculture and work experience acquired through growing up on a farm or through a small number of internships now available. Overall employment is projected to decline because of increasing productivity and consolidation of farms. Aquaculture should provide some new employment opportunities; in addition, developments in value-added marketing and organic farming are making small-scale farming economically viable again. Self-employed farmers' and ranchers' incomes vary greatly from year to year.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural managers direct the activities of one of the world's largest and most productive agricultural sectors. They produce enough food and fiber to meet the needs of the United States and produce a surplus for export. Farmers and ranchers Responsibilities of farmers and ranchers range from caring for livestock, to operating machinery, to maintaining equipment and facilities. The size of the farm or ranch often determines which of these tasks farmers and ranchers will handle themselves. Operators of small farms usually perform all tasks, physical and administrative. They keep records for tax purposes, service machinery, maintain buildings, and grow vegetables and raise animals. Operators of large farms, on the other hand, have employees who help with the physical work that small-farm operators do themselves. Although employment on most farms is limited to the farmer and one or two family workers or hired employees, some large farms have 100 or more full-time and seasonal workers. Some of these employees are in nonfarm occupations, working as truck drivers, sales representatives, bookkeepers, and computer specialists.

Students who choose to specialize in Farm Business Management and Finance enter the field at an exciting time in agriculture. Farms are growing in size and complexity, placing new demands on farm decision makers. Sound training in business analysis and economics is therefore more essential to success than ever before. The faculty draw on their strong ties to agribusiness firms, farm leaders, and government agencies to bring the changing world of agriculture into the classroom. Students meet with guest speakers, take field trips to financial markets in New York City, and travel to agricultural regions in the U.S., as well as other countries, to study different farm production systems, such as recent trips to the Louisiana Delta, the San Joaquin Valley, and Australia. Students can also tap into Cornell's world-renowned expertise in the animal and plant sciences. This unequaled opportunity to combine science and business gives students an even greater competitive advantage in the job market. Several special programs are available to undergraduates. The
