BCP DRAFT HIST 1
Baltimore Curriculum Project Draft Lessons Introductory Notes These lessons generally follow the grade-by-grade topics in the Core Knowledge Sequence, but they have been developed independent of the Core Knowledge Foundation. While the Core Knowledge Foundation encourages the development and sharing of lessons based on the Core Knowledge Sequence, it does not endorse any one set of lesson plans as the best or only way that the knowledge in the Sequence should be taught. You may feel free to download and distribute these lessons, but please note that they are currently in DRAFT form. At this time the draft lessons on this web site do NOT have accompanying graphics, such as maps or cut-out patterns. Graphics will be added to this site later. In participating BCP schools, these lessons are used in conjunction with the Direct Instruction skills programs in reading, language, and math. If you use or adapt these lessons, keep in mind that they are meant to address content and the application of skills. You will need to use other materials to ensure that children master skills in reading, language, and math. Second Grade - American Civilization - Overview
The concepts of the Constitution and the resulting government of the United States can be difficult for young children. An attempt was made to simplify the events and outcomes of the First Constitutional Convention. As you read over the following lessons you may wish to add activities to your study or simply use them in a bare bones fashion. The essential elements that your students should take away are:

and biographies by and about famous African American USC Aiken African http//www.sciway.net/hist/people/africam.htmlAfrican americans, Three Rivers
http://www.africanamericans.com/EducationalPotpourri.htm
Educational Potpourri
This site is useful to teachers because it gives the names of many
successful African Americans. Not only does it give names of successful
African Americans, but it also tells where they are now and how they got to
where they are. This list contains names of successful educators all the way
to successful athletes. This site could be used for many things in the
classroom. A teacher could go to this site for information on African
Americans and their many accomplishments.
http://www.health.org/mlk/mlk98/biog.htm#education

This site is very useful to future or current teachers. The site gives
examples of court cases, which prompted the civil rights movement for African Americans. This site gives ideas of class work students can do to learn more about African Americans, and how they fought to get treated the way they should have been treated anyway. One example the site gives is to write an essay about one of the court cases given on the site or maybe even finding a new case that not many people have heard of and writing an essay on that to share with the class.

Updated: November 22, 2002
M. Fellman // // 604 291 5196 e-mail: fellman@sfu.ca Seminar: Monday 9:30 - 13:20 HC 1325 CALENDAR DESCRIPTION Examining the political, social, economic, and cultural elements that led to the break up of the American republic, the Civil War, and the problems involved in reconstructing the union. ( seminar PREREQUISITE 45 credit hours including 9 hours of lower division history credit. Students with credit for HIST 447 under the same topic may not take HIST 450 for further credit. Recommended: HIST 212 or HIST 213. COURSE CONTENT We will focus on the disintegration of national institutions and shared values in the antebellum period; the social and political as well as the military significance of the war itself; and the main events of Reconstruction. We will discuss the impact of these events on ordinary people, black and white, as well as on leaders. Rather than a course for ”war buffs,” this will be an analysis of war and society, broadly construed. In addition to reading and discussing the substantial weekly readings, each student will write two six page review essays and a take-home final exam.
