If You Eat, You Are Involved In Farming
Did You Know

  • The number of farmers under the age of 25 has decreased 50% in the last 10 years!!
  • 20% of American jobs have ties to Agriculture!! This is an editorial by me, Sarah Brombaugh, of Same Dog Productions, part owner of a Family Farm Corporation, and wife of an American Farmer. I did not grow up on a farm. I was raised in a big city, where I thought farmers had it made. All the food they could eat for free!! Throw some seed in the ground and make money!! Wow, what an easy life. I have now lived on a Family Farm for 27 years and I know differently....
    M
any remember the years when farming was a way of life. When you grew all your own food...eggs, pork, beef, poultry, gardens full of bountiful vegetables.
T ractors didn't cost as much or more as a new home. You didn't have to plant thousands of acres to make a living.
T hose days are gone. Gone forever we're afraid. Along with those days, the Family Farm is disappearing.

Goat Milk and Its Use as a
Hypo-Allergenic Infant Food
A Review of the Literature
by Dr. H.P. Maree, MBChB
Schweizer Reneke, Western Transvaal, South Africa Dr. Maree presented this paper at an annual meeting of the South African Medical Assn. Vitally interested in dairy goats, Dr. Maree operates a large, modern goat dairy. He milks about 1,000 Saanens in a double-eight side-opening milking parlor with a Boumatic low-line system. All the milk produced on the farm is concentrated down to 50 percent volume by the Danish process and canned with no additives in attractive containers.
Summary
The incidence and symptoms of a milk induced allergy in infants are viewed. The physical, chemical and antigenic properties of goat milk and cow milk are analyzed and compared. The value of goat milk as a substitute for infants intolerant to cow milk formula is elucidated by means of more recent work on the subject. The use of goat milk as a hypoallergenic infant food or as a milk substitute in infants allergic or intolerant to cow milk has often been debated over the past decades. A fair amount of work has been carried out in different countries on the composition, nutritive value and use of goat milk as a substitute in cases of allergy or intolerance to cow milk formula. It is our object to review the older literature, to emphasize newer work done, and to give a brief account of the present available data.

by Bill Christison,
Brussels, Belgium / Chillicothe, Missouri, U.S.A.
Bill Christison , president of both the U.S. National Family Farm Coalition and the Missouri Rural Crisis Center delivered this speech in March of 1998, in Brussels, Belgium to the Confederation of Paisans, a confederation of farmer organizations in 16 European countries representing two million farmers. Also present were delegates from the European Parliament and the European Commission. Introduction I am Bill Christison and I bring you all greetings from the family farmers of the United States. I am the newly elected president of the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC), a coalition of more than thirty organizations in thirty-five states. I am also the president of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center, a statewide organization with approximately 4,000 farm families in our membership. First I would like to express our gratitude for the invitation to be here today and for the support that helped make it possible. Also I want to introduce a highly respected family farmer and organizer from Wisconsin who is also the vice-president of the National Family Farm Coalition, Mr. John Kinsman, who you will have the opportunity to speak with later.

Outline of a Call to Action ...
Family Farms, not Factory Farms.
by Rhonda Perry,
Chicago, Illinois
Rhonda Perry is the program director of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center. Thisspeech was delivered October 3, 1998 at the annual Farm Aid gathering of U.S. farmers and supporters. What we've heard loud and clear here today - from citizens all over the country is: Family Farms, not Factory Farms Why are people demanding family farms, not factory farms? Factory farms
  • pollute our air and land
  • send dollars out of our rural communities
  • create food safety concerns over food safety
  • raise animals inhumanely, and we all know that corporations always put profits before people.
Family farms ... are the only hope for a sustainable agriculture system.
  • We care about the land. For generations, we have sustained our families, our rural communities and the economy of our states.
  • Family farmers should be the ones making decisions about their operations - not be simply becoming laborers for corporations.
  • And finally, family farmers producing food in this country is in our best interest.

Table of Contents Resources for Agriculture farms of the future by Senator Byron Dorgan
There is a way to save family-based agriculture in America. It would be good economically, good for the environment, good in just about every way except for those who want to turn our agriculture into Monsanto-In-The-Fields. Harry Truman proposed the answer over 50 years ago. Put simply, it is to enact a farm program that focuses farm support on family-scale agriculture and let the others fend for themselves.
Before that can happen, though, we have to put aside a lot of myths. The foremost is that farmers
between 300 and 500 acres. (The average farm unit in the US today is just under 500 acres; many family operations are double that or more.)
This is social product, and family-based agriculture is a prolific source of it. Study after study has documented this. The most famous was that of Walter Goldschmidt of the University of California, who compared two California farm communities in the 1940s. One included mainly small and medium-sized family farms; the other, large-scale producers. The localities were similar in other respects.

Family Farms, Not Factory Farms Updated January 31, 2003 Family Farms, Not Factory Farms Iowa is an agricultural powerhouse. It is number one in the nation for pork, corn and soybean production. Twenty-four percent of all hogs nationally are raised in Iowa. Many of the state's industries are related to agriculture including meatpacking, which is a major source of jobs in many areas of the state. As an agricultural state, farming issues greatly impact all of Iowa's residents, effecting everything from water quality to property taxes. There have been drastic changes in the rural economy in the last decade. While farmers and their families are working hard to make ends meet, agribusiness interests, particularly industrial livestock facilities, are infiltrating our rich farmland and pushing the family farmer out of business. As factory-style animal production has gained a stranglehold in Iowa, thousands of Iowa's family farmers go under every year. The livestock factories that replace the family farms greatly distress Iowa's environment and rural economy. ICAN is committed to policies that will promote sustainable family farms and strengthen rural communities.

The New Politics of Food

The contemporary triumph of free-market capitalism has revealed to farmers, if not to other Americans, the bitter last act in this drama. Farmers can see themselves being reduced from their mythological status as independent producers to a subservient and vulnerable role as sharecroppers or franchisees. The control of food production, both livestock and crops, is being consolidated not by the government but by a handful of giant corporations. While farmers and ranchers suffered three years of severely depressed prices at the close of the 1990s, the corporations enjoyed soaring profits from the same line of goods. Growers are surrounded now on both sidesfacing concentrated market power not only from the companies that buy their crops and animals but also from the firms that sell them essential inputs like seeds and fertilizer. In the final act of

FREEDOM TO TRADE?
Trading Away American Family Farms
Anuradha Mittal, co-director, Food First, with Mayumi Kawaai On January 1, 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) was established. It is home to a series of trade accords that include agreements on services, agriculture, intellectual property rights, and other issues never before included in international trade rules. The organization was established with a commitment to raise standards of living and ensure full employment in the context of expanding trade, while upholding the objective of sustainable development. The reality has been almost the opposite. In other words, trade agreements are good for American farmers. Yeutter even singled out labor unions, radical environmental advocacy groups, and anti-globalization forces as the main opponents of farmers. What is the Agreement on Agriculture? The AOA sought the liberalization of trade in agricultural products by opening up markets, and cutting domestic supports and export subsidies to help create more equal competition in the market. Instead this agreement has turned into the first step in making food production into a business monopolized by a few. The AOA has created an unfair global trade system. It has not only proven to be a threat to the stability of Third World farmers who do not have competitive advantages, but has resulted in a US domestic agricultural policy that favors agribusiness over family farmers.

The Danish Association of Family Farms The Danish Association of Family Farms was founded in 1941 with the purpose of maintaining Danish family farms within close relatives' ownership. It is also a cultural addendum for the ordinary professional agricultural organisations with their aims at qualified political agricultural relationship. Through Jens and Anna Jensen's Foundation The Danish Association of Family Farms is annually able to hand over scholarships to young students wishing to work or study agriculture in foreign countries. The Danish Association of Family Farms maintains an archive, The Danish Archive of Family Farms , which now is situated at the compound of Danish National Agriculture Museum. Many research workers of local history or national history are frequent visitors at the archive. Through consultants in real estate and farm business the members of The Danish Association of Family Farms can be advised in connection with sale, preparing of wills and granting loans. The Danish Association of Family Farms is the publisher of a journal "Slægtsgården".
