PHIL 361/599 Philosophy of Art and Beauty Spring 1998 - California State University, Long Beach Lecture Notes: Week Eight: Expressionism This week we look at another dominant aesthetic theory in this century, expressionism. Tolstoy's version is a rather crude one, but it has several interesting elements that you will see identified in the discussion questions: http://www.csulb.edu/~jvancamp/361r14.html Other expressionist theorists include R.G. Collingwood, Benedetto Croce, E. F. Carritt, and John Dewey. They are all "essentialist" theories that is, they believe they have identified the "essence" of art. They share the view that this essence is an inner feeling or emotion which is expressed externally in the physical manifestation of art whether a painting, sound waves, or moving bodies in dance. The theorists disagree on the ways in which they characterize the inner feeling or emotion of the artist and the properties of the work itself. On the positive side, expressionism does seem to capture an important element of art valued by many artists and art lovers. Artists often speak of what they are "expressing." Art lovers, critics, etc. often speak of what they think the artist is trying to "express." So the theory is consistent with much of our actual talk about art and seems to explain at least part of what we understand as "art." Notice that this understanding of art emphasizes the relationship between the artist and the art object.

Tokyo, As video game users know, there is a classic RPG video game called "Dragon Quest" from ENIX . This ballet took idea from this video game. Minoru Suzuki, known as one of famous and creative choreographers in Japanese ballet scene, produced this ballet. As Haruomi Hosono, known as the leader of YMO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and ambient musician, pointed out, the image worlds in video game and animation make "Romantic" form in their own stories and worlds. "Romantic video game world" just adapts itself to "Romantic ballet world". The harmony and gap of opposite different two worlds could be senced. In both fields of ballet and video game, this ballet was evaluated. From children to adults, the audience was delighted.

Dance
By Deni Kasrel
There's a slate of shows in store by local movement artists who defy neat categorization. Grace Mi-He Lee, Asimina Chremos and Paule Turner, Duchess, all merge well-studied dance technique with theater and performance art. Temple educator Louise Gillette presents a fresh perspective on modern choreography via creative use of the trapeze. All this eclecticism promises to yield some wild and idiosyncratic work. Spellbinding describes the art and craft of Sankai Juku, a top pick from the crop of visiting acts. Their November appearance at the Annenberg Center is already sparking a buzz in the dance community. Modern Dance Ensembles Oct. 11-12: Eleone. Eighffanbutlah , celebrates cultures crossing paths at Philly's notorious corner of Eighth and Butler Streets. Accompanying music includes tunes by Simon and Garfunkel plus Bone Thugs N Harmony. How's that for diversity? Oct. 24-26: Trinity Irish Dance Company. Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St., 898-6791.

Out of Africa
By Margaret Regan Two years ago, UA presents executive director Ken Foster flew to a dance festival in Berlin. Normally, international arts gatherings are one of the pleasures of his job, but this one turned out to be a lugubrious exercise in German Expressionism, full of dancers in black and empty of joyous movement. "I was going crazy," Foster said last week. "I was dying of boredom. Then I saw there was an African dance company on the program. I thought, 'Well, at least it's not German Expressionism.'" "It was incredible," he said. "I had never seen anything like it. It was one of the major arts experiences of my life." Their work is "contemporary African choreography. It's extremely powerful and visual. The choreography is amazing and the dancers are amazing." Solstice Celebration and the season's final Nutcracker On the program is a single long work, "In a place where men dominate the field in contemporary dance, they're an all-female contemporary troupe." Foster said. "They're African and they work off that, but their work is very contemporary. They're of a traditional background but not traditional."

98. A Study In Digital Abstract Expressionism
Begun by artists at the turn of the last century, expressionism was a revolutionarymovement in painting that was to usher in the new era of Modern Art.
http://www.basilbaker.com/The_Arts/abstract_expressionism.html
Begun by artists at the turn of the last century, Expressionism was a revolutionary movement in painting that was to usher in the new era of Modern Art. Unlike the Impressionists a quarter century earlier who sought to the convey in their painting impressions gained from direct observation, the Expressionists sought to portray only what they felt within themselves - to transmute subjective feelings through the medium of paint into an 'expression' on the canvas. Abstract Expressionism originated in the 1940s and was influenced by earlier 20th century art movements such as Cubism and Surrealism. The works of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali promoted abstraction rather than representation . It wasn't until after the Second World War that Abstract Expressionism became a major art movement, with New York replacing Paris as the center of the art world. Some of the more well known Abstract Expressionists were Mark Rothko (American, 1903-1970), Willem De Kooning (Dutch-American, 1904-1997), and Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956). With the convergence of digital painting tools and cyberspace at the end of the 20th century, a new generation of Abstract Expressionists are exhibiting their art on the World Wide Web. No longer confined to brick-and-mortar galleries, these artists can now reach a global audience. Edvard Reiter, whose work is shown below, is representative of this new school of Digital Abstract Expressionism.
