In the late 1930s and early 1940s, around the outbreak of World War II, many Surrealists fled Europe and settled in New York. REVIEWS The Dybbuk by Julia Pascal New End Theatre Cheekily upstaging the Royal Shakespeare Company, whose own version of Anski’s classic opens in two weeks’ time, Julia Pascal has transformed Hasidic myth into an urgent play for today a timeless drama that reaches back into the rituals of the past and looks forward into the ashes of the 20th century. Framed by the musings of a young Jewish girl on the sterility of present-day Germany ("I go to Germany and I think that Hitler won" ) the play is set in 1942 in a Jewish ghetto where the inhabitants confront their terror by ritually acting out the story deeply rooted in their culture of the bride who is possessed on her wedding day by the restless soul of the young student who loved and lost her. Pascal’s simple, cleverly designed and movingly acted production throws naturalism and expressionism, dance, music and dialogue (in English and Yiddish) into the melting pot and comes up with something distinctly and refreshingly un-British. Purists will no doubt argue that Anski’s original has been subsumed, but this is genuinely creative work which boasts a final sequence that is as spine-tingling as anything you’ll see in the theatre this year.     COLOR IN ART - IMPRESSIONISM AND EXPRESSIONISM

      This apple is made up of different color strokes. The background is green, which is opposite red on the color wheel (complementary color). The shadow is made up of blues and purples. The table top is yellow, which is the complement of purple. All of these methods were devised by the Impressionist.

    VCU DANCE UNVEILS 2002-2003 SEASON
    "Last year was our 20th anniversary and we honored the past while we looked to the future," said Martha Curtis, chair of VCU Dance. "But this year we are really concentrating on the future by supporting our recent alumni and bringing in Tere O’Connor, one of the nation’s hippest and hottest choreographers."
    &Mac183; The VCU Dance Alumni Concert. This performance will feature exciting new work by VCU Dance alumni who have continued choreographing and performing. The evening will include a commissioned work by "Richmond’s own Starr Foster," a solo by Ray Schwartz, founder of the Charlottesville-based Zen Monkey Project and work by Reginald Crump, Laura Schandelmeier, Tommy Parlon, Adrienne Clancy and many others.     Expressionism seems to be the expression of lifestyle of a new generation, which only agreed with disapproval of the social and politic structures.
    • The point is not only the sensual or decorative style of the appearance, but also the psychical, mental and social analysis.
      Expressionism aims at the emotional aspect. It wants to convey the inner expression, and it does not matter if it deals with landscapes, daily objects or persons.
      The big contrast to expressionism are the bright, friendly colours of impressionism.
      All the problems of the new age of industry on the one hand the expansion of the city on the other hand, the loneliness of the people are topics in which art is very engaged .
        "The mask" (painted by Ensor , a painter from Belgium) is a symbol of alteration, laughing is the expression of absurdity, the coloured costumes are symbols of the vanity of the figures: creatures without faces, which are not able to see or to recognize, only strong in groups.

    Crimson Coast Dance Society opened its 5th season of dance in Nanaimo at Malapina University College Theatre last Friday with Lola Dance's "Volio". The work is the latest from choreographer Lola McLaughlin and was commissioned by Candance, a network of Canadian dance presenters.
    Ms McLaughlin is a genuine BC native. She grew up in Osoyoos and was one of the first graduates in dance from Simon Fraser University's School for the Contemporary Arts. Despite her BC roots, Ms McLaughlin has been strongly influenced by her travels in Europe and by German expressionism. Her choreography is stylish, and carefully crafted with a distinctly European sensibility. In "Volio" we saw both West Coast and German influences at play.
    "Volio" (the word is from Novial, an artifical language invented by a Danish linguist in the 1920s and means the act of wanting something) is not a "story" piece. Instead it explores a number of themes through movement, including confinement, the yearning for freedom, longing for that which is just out of reach and the nature of ordinary gestures and events.
    Ms McLaughlin's dances are always visually striking. Here the set consisted of two large evergreen shrubs, each set on a dolly with a handle like an old-fashioned wagon. At the back of the stage was a long, narrow window-like rectangle onto which was projected an ever-changing view of clouds and sky. A ladder on wheels led to the window.
