Who is Will Durant?

Civilization begins with order, grows with liberty, and dies with chaos . Will Durant
You must know of William “Billy” Durant , the founder of General Motors; but have you ever heard of Will Durant? In case you haven’t, his contribution to the understanding of the great legacy of Western Civilization, runs just as smoothly down the road of knowledge as any roadster built during the golden era of autocars. He was a soft spoken man, associated with the Ferrer Modern School an experiment in libertarian education. Durant abandoned his studies in the seminary and viewed himself to be a Socialist at one point an atheist and later an agnostic. He was influenced by Spinoza's Ethics Geometrically Demonstrated - but, above all, in his personality it revealed a philosopher actually living his philosophy, merging practice and precept, and dedicating himself, in poverty, simplicity and sincerity, to an attempt to understand the world.
His significance is more in the process of his life’s work - The Story of Civilization , a series of books, than the theme of conflict between Communism and Capitalism, that he often portrays. Questions of inquiry have merit, you be the judge of the accuracy in his conclusions.

Existentialism Philosophy
Jean-Paul Sartre Properly Understood

Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. JEAN-PAUL SARTRE
The question is often posed: Why does a conservative use the nom de plume of a Communist? Embedded within this query is the need to clarify the significance, positions and actions of the most famous designate for Existentialism. Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) the French novelist, playwright, existentialist philosopher, and literary critic was always certain of his own value to society as a philosopher and writer, never avoiding an opportunity to demonstrate his superior mind. The audacity of his own worth should not be confused with pomposity of conceit. Sartre resisted fatigue, treated pain as if it were a challenge, repudiated personal vanity and took immeasurable pride in his intellect. He was an original, as Ronald Hayman said in his biography of Sartre - A Life "I've got a golden brain."
To comprehend the man, one does not have to fully master his classic Being and Nothingness: A Phenomenological Essay on Ontology, but one needs to understand his basic viewpoint of our conscious choice - to live one's life "authentically" and in a unified fashion, or not - this is the fundamental freedom of our lives. Nor do we have to agree with the situation ethic conclusions that flow from his Existentialism and Human Emotions, but we need to appreciate his concept that - Existence precedes Essence. Sartre claims that we have no predetermined nature or essence that controls what we are, what we do; which gives rise to absolute individuality and absolute freedom. Nevertheless, what we should admire is his precept that: in order to be free ourselves, we must desire the freedom of other people.

Philosophy of Religion Course Notes Existentialism:
In this section we will consider the viewpoints of two existentialist philosophers: Nietzsche and Tolstoy. To understand how these philosophers with such different views could be considered part of the same movement, we must first take a look at what existentialism is - what views of the world make one an existentialist. The nature of the human condition: Existentialism has its roots in the Middle Ages, and really gained force and popularity in Europe in response to the first and second World Wars. During the Middle ages, the European continent experienced the Black Plague and the increasing corruption of the church. This precipitated a crisis of faith for many, in effect bringing the Problem of Evil home to even the most common of people. It seemed incredible to believe in a God which would allow the innocent to die a horrible death by the Plague while the "men of God" said one thing and did another and were enriched by it. The World Wars only added to the crisis by providing evidence of man's capacity for inhumanity to other persons. The only way out of this dilemma was to claim that for whatever reason, God had left us alone - we were on our own. For the existentialist, this meant that unlike animals or other natural objects, human beings were the only beings in which existence preceded essence - we were not created for a specific purpose or meaning. If there was to be meaning to life, it was we who had to invent it (even if we denied that this was possible). The only authentic humans were those who not only realized this fact of our existence, but who embraced it and tried to life as full and rich a life as possible. We revealed that which we chose to value of life by our actions - words meant nothing, deeds everything. Where the existentialist differ is in their response to the human condition.
