Greece uncovers 'holy grail' of Greek archeology
Nation euphoric over discovery of the Lyceum
January 16, 1997
Web posted at: 11:30 p.m. EST (0430 GMT) ATHENS (CNN) Excavators in Greece say they've stumbled across the Lyceum, the school where Aristotle taught his pupils science and philosophy 2,500 years ago. In essence, it's the birthplace of Western modern science and philosophy. It was here that Aristotle exhalted the virtues of a sound mind and body to his pupils. "We are very, very happy. This is a very, very important discovery. We have now, here, in Athens, the main proof about the historical continuity of the Hellenic cultural heritage," said Greek Cultural Minister Venizelos Evangelos. Considered the holy grail of Greek archeology, the Lyceum was discovered by crews preparing for the construction of a new Museum of Modern Art. "Aristotle stands at the foundation of modern European science and a great deal of European philosophical thought, and so it's extremely exciting just to know where Aristotle would have been walking, when he was teaching, what kind of rooms he would have been teaching in," said Dr. Jeremy Tanner, of the London Institute of Archeology. For 170 years, since Greeks gained independence from the Turks, they have scoured the landscape to find the birthplace of Western civilization.

Painting of a "Casta" (mixed blood) family in 18th a fleet of Spanish ships led by Pedro Menéndez de Aviles established the first permanent European settlement in North America at present-day St. Augustine, Florida. After a difficult first decade of conflict with the local Timucua Indians, the city established itself as the capital of Spanish La Florida, which in the sixteenth century extended northward to Virginia and westward to the Mississippi. The town was also the administrative center for the very widespread Spanish Franciscan mission system that extended throughout La Florida in the seventeenth century. St. Augustine was ent ering its fifth decade as a city when the first settlers arrived at Jamestown.

Archaeology/Anthropology Part of the History/Social Studies Web Site for K-12 Teachers. We tend to look at ourselves and others in our culture (and to other cultures) with a lens that has been twisted and warped by our limited experience and education. The resources available in the sites below should help teachers think and plan on how they can use the global resources of the Internet to make sure that their charges have access to information about the varieties of cultures both past and present (See also the "Diversity" sites from the Main Menu ). These sites are a start and need the input and feedback from others. Please send your suggestions by E-mail to dboals@execpc.com.

Hittite and Anatolian Languages Professor Jay Kumar is a scholar and instructor of Latin, Vedic Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, as well as other Ancient Indo-European Languages for the past 10 years. In response to the article on Sanskrit provided at Hinduwebsite, Prof. Jay Kumar made the following observations. ...As an Indian myself I am very proud of our rich Sanskrit and Hindu tradition which is one reason for my desire to study Sanskrit and other Ancient Languages. I always assumed Sanskrit was the originator of the other languages- Latin, Greek, Germanic,Slavic,etc...
However over the years of my academic career and doctoral dissertation in Indo-European Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics I know now am convinced that there was an earlier language which you already document in your webpage as Proto-Indo-European.
