Using the Correct Reference Tool
tell >. We are all familiar with this word meaning an artificial hill, or a mound, from a previous settlement. Since the word has passed into the English language, the first librarian looked up the word in an unabridged English dictionary. The English dictionary correctly defined the word and gave the etymology as if the word came from Arabic. Using the correct tools let us examine this word's etymology. Arabic as a written language is much more recent than Hebrew. Old or Early Arabic has no surviving written records. The Talmud, which pre-dates written Arabic, has some statements containing names of objects in Arabic, making the Talmud one of the earliest sources of recorded Arabic. Classical Arabic dates from about 632 C.E. with the creation of an Arab empire. Arabic contained many dialects because the speakers were tribal and isolated from each other. However, speakers from different dialects could understand each other. Because of this isolation, Arabic had fewer outside influences than Hebrew and tended to have short vowels. Because of the synthetic nature of how Arabic developed in the classical period, most of the verbal and noun forms are created from three letter roots. Hebrew, too, has three-letter roots, but certain words have remnants or clues to earlier two-letter roots. For example some two-letter roots became words with a yod as the middle letter or via a doubling of one of the letters.

The Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Philosophy was one of the four original faculties at the University of Oslo. In 1861, however, this faculty was divided into two new faculties, The Faculty of Arts and The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The fields of study covered by The Faculty of Arts range from the classical civilizations of Antiquity up to the modern world and the cultural aspects of its technology. The variety manifests itself in the nearly 80 different subjects offered: European and Asian languages, linguistic and philological studies, area studies concentrated on the history and culture of particular regions, aesthetic studies, data- and media-studies as well as a large and diverse group of cultural, historical and philosophical subjects. In the 3-year period 2000-2002 special emphasis will be laid on investment in research in European Archeology, Corpus-based Linguistics (language research based on large collections of texts in machine-readable form), Philosophy of Science, and East-Asian languages and cultures. Towards the end of 2002, these research milieux will each be assessed to determine whether to continue the investment in that particular area, or to transfer the funding elsewhere. "Il quarto stato" by Giuseppe Pelizza di Volpedo (1901) Certificate in Italian Studies at the University of South Florida The history of the geographic expression that today we call Italy is the sum of many particular histories and cultures. Yet, in their diversity and diaspora, the people of Italy have preserved, through time and place, a sense of common identity. For this reason, to understand the complexity of past and present experiences of Italians in the peninsula and of their descendants abroad, the Undergraduate Certificate in Italian Studies is designed with a broad interdisciplinary perspective. The certificate will encompass courses in several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the College of Fine Arts. The majority of courses will focus on the study of history and culture of the people who inhabit or originated from the Italian peninsula and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily from pre-historic times to the present. In addition, however, offerings will also focus on the Italian diaspora with specific reference to the experiences of people of Italian descent in the many nations in which they settled from the early 19th century to the present. Students are required to take between 23 and 28 semester hours from a list of courses approved for the certificate. A Faculty Advisory Committee will coordinate the Certificate of Italian Studies. Students may receive credit for courses, not included in the above list, or (if circumstances require it) may substitute a required course with another, by petitioning and if approved by the Advisory Committee.

(With the contribution of E.U. within the Culture 2000 framework program) Thanks to its transactional structure, the European Heritage Laboratory "Le Navi di Pisa" has been promoted as scientific support activity
Managed by the town of Pisa, and co-ordinated by the Soprintendente Archeologo per la Toscana (Archaeological Supervisor for Tuscany), the laboratory should also consider the general strategy developed by the Scientific Commission specifically established by the Italian Ministry of Culture to plan and design the creation of the Roman Ships Museum in Pisa. The activity will be based on a strict scientific collaboration, in order to widen the feasibility of future works and make possible the mutual exchange of experience and their diffusion at an international level. The exchange of experience will focus on naval archaeology and on safeguarding of submerge wood discussing on innovative aspects for the diffusion and the presentation to the public of the results and will take advantage of the knowledge acquired by the partners participating in the laboratory. The basic activity of the laboratory is much more relevant in relation to the fact that most of the ships found in the old Pisa port are in good condition of conservation; indeed the structure of the relics is still intelligible. Moreover, on an important part of the boat's superficies, there are still remnants of the wooden caulking work, and traces of the paint on the wood surface.

The chemical study of these materials could, if integrated properly with available information from historical sources and archaeological data contribute knowledge to craft techniques and everyday activities of the past and furnish precious information on exchanges and ancient commercial trade routes.

    Evidence from South Korea
How typical or representative was the Quanzhou ship of Asian ships of its time? While the process of archeological comparison has only begun and will require more data, additional information is available from two important shipwreck sites in South Korea.
From 1976 to 1982, archeologists excavated a rich cargo from a submerged wreck near Shinan, and this initial work was followed by excavation and recovery of the ship's remaining structure. These remains are now undergoing conservation treatment at the Mokpo Conservation and Restoration Center of South Korea's Cultural Properties Research Institute, and a one-fifth-scale model has been built at the Mokpo Center to aid in the analysis of the ship's structure. Experts dated the shipwreck to 1323 using an associated wooden cargo tag and coins, the latest of which were minted in 1310 and may be of South Chinese origin.
So far, this ship's cargo has attracted the most attention. The cargo included at least 16,000 ceramic items and over seven million brass-bronze coins (totaling over 26 tons). These coins provided a dramatic example of recycling and reuse in the archeological record, since the oldest coin in this collection dated to A.D. 14.
As this animation of the Brunei wreck shows, careful mapping of a shipwreck can provide archeologists with an understanding of where cargo was stored in a ship before it sank.

Seaborne commerce on a large scale in Asia dates to the Song Dynasty of China (A.D. 960-1270). The Mongols in the succeeding Yuan Dynasty (ca. 1271-1368) went on to build even more ships on a grand scale, and during his stay at the imperial court from 1275 to 1292, Marco Polo described four-masted, seagoing merchant ships with watertight bulkheads and crews of up to 300. Early in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), an expansion of seaborne trade took place with the construction of an immense treasure fleet reported to consist of 317 ships when it was assembled in Nanjing in 1405 that made trading cruises throughout the Indian Ocean and the China seas (see Ancient Chinese Explorers
Ming seaborne commerce declined rapidly during the mid-15th century as a result of conflict between the court and the merchants over control of the trade. The emperor eventually declared the construction of any ship with more than two masts a capital offense, authorized the destruction of all oceangoing ships and the arrest of merchants who sailed them, and declared it a crime even to go to sea in a multimasted ship.
