This date marks the end of the "long count" of the Maya calendar, which will then revert back to zero, as Mayan time is cyclical rather than linear. Ethnobotany Talks
Out of his research, Chris Howkins is able to present talks on subjects which he has studied. The talks are designed to be of general interest but have the emphasis changed to suit groups with special interest, such as gardening, family history, local history, natural history etc. Obviously they are adjusted between infant school and university levels. These adjustments are normally made automatically but secretaries are invited to discuss any particular requirements at the time of booking. Each talk is designed to be entertaining as well as informative and no previous knowledge is required. As so few groups ask for film slides nowadays these talks are designed to be colourful without artificial aids. Next Talk : Old Cottage Life

Their beauty has inspired authors, poets, artists, and gardeners with centuries. Gentians also provide medicines, timber, and other useful products. Gentians contain a unique combination of the phytochemicals seco-iridoids and xanthones. The seco-iridoids are bitter, and gentians are the source of the most bitter compound known. No gentians are very poisonous, but due to their bitterness they are seldom eaten by animals. The stemless gentian ( Gentiana acaulis ) is well-known as one of the flowers symbolizing the Alps, and its deep-blue, large trumpet-shaped flowers are commonly found adoring items from Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Other gentians that are often used in artwork and as decoration are other species of gentians (

Home The Legacy Ethnobotany Trail Legacy's Ethnobotany Trail is an introduction to native Texas plants and trees that were used by various groups, including prehistoric Native Americans, early settlers, and modern residents. The trail is located near the Center for Archaeological Research on University of Texas property and takes approximately one hour to explore. During a guided tour, our staff will provide information about the various plant species and their uses. Also on the trail, you may see the occasional white-tailed deer, roadrunners, rabbits, rock squirrels and eastern gray squirrels, or coyote tracks. Toothache Tree (Tingletongue, Prickly Ash)
The leaves and bark of this tree have numbing properties when chewed and were used to deaden the pain of toothaches. A wash could also be prepared to sooth itching skin. A tea made from the berries can sooth a sore throat. Texas Persimmon
This plant is easily identified by its smooth reddish-brown bark. The fruit is black when ripe and is suitable food for humans and was used both raw and in jellies, puddings and wine. It also yields a black or dark brown dye for skins, hair, and animal hides. Mountain Cedar (Ash Juniper)
The aromatic character of this wood is considered a good insect repellant so it is often used for closets, chests and paneling. The berries are used as a flavoring for cooking but are

Each of the museums has close ties with different cultural groups in various parts of the world. By working with these people, and conducting ethnobiological field research, hypotheses can be generated on the value of different ecosystem resources to human health and well-being. Hypotheses can be generated and tested in experimental biology studies. Voucher specimens of all collections will be deposited in the Berkeley Natural History Museums and in the countries of origin, and will provide an invaluable set of archival materials for the future. The geographical focus of these ethnobotanical expeditions will be in California, Latin America, Pacific Islands, Asia, and Africa.
Medicines and Foods from Biological Species
Research will be conducted on medical ethnobotany to understand the ethnoempirical and ethnotheoretical perspectives of how local/indigenous peoples select, prepare, and consume plants, fungi, and animals for medicines and foods. This medical and nutritional ethnobotanical knowledge can help generate hypotheses on how these therapies are beneficial and experimental biology studies can be designed to test these hypotheses. Collections of groups of organisms can also be conducted based on taxonomic, ecological, geographical, and physiological characteristics.
