The History of Banking and other Financial Institutions in Ethiopia The agreement that was reached in 1905 between Emperor Minilik II and Mr.Ma Gillivray, representative of the British owned National Bank of Egypt marked the introduction of modern banking in Ethiopia. Following the agreement, the first bank called Bank of Abysinia was inaugurated in Feb.16, 1906 by the Emperor. The Bank was totally managed by the Egyptian National Bank and the following rights and concessions were agreed upon the establishment of Bank of Abyssinia:-
    • The capital of the Bank was agreed to be Pound Sterling 500,000 and one-fifth was subscribed and the rest was to be obtained by selling shares in some important cities such as London, Paris and New York. The Bank was given full rights to issue bank notes and monitor coins which were to be legal tender and all the profits there from a ruing to the bank and freely exchangeable against gold and silver on cover by the Bank as well as to establish silver coins and abolish the Maria Theresa. Land was given to the Bank free of harges and permitted to build offices and warehouses.

Some Archeologists endorse the view that Endybis was the first king to introduce gold coins in his name around the third century (.227-235 A.D.). The second king to strike similar coins also in his name was Aphilas. The coins bearing the image of kings Endybis and Aplilas are among the evidence that pre Christian Ethiopia had her own currency. After Endybis and Applials each succeeding Axumite sovereign introduced his own coins with his image and insignia. Barter Commodity Money Salt as currency In Ethiopia, there was a time when salt was even preferred to gold and silver. The amole salt served as a principal item of exchange in Ethiopia for over one thousand years. Salt was not merely a kitchen commodity but also a medium of exchange in larger scale transactions. The salt bar used as a medium of exchange in Ethiopia was called "guela" in Tigrigna, amole in Amaharic and its common name was " hew" which means salt both in Aamharic and Tigrigna.

ETHIOPIA A Short History of Ethiopia
Historians agree that Ethiopia is considered by some to be the oldest independent country in sub-Saharan Africa. The earliest evidence of Ethiopian history dates back to around 1000 BC when the Old Testament records that the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon. The first recorded kingdom in Ethiopia grew around Aksum during the third century BC. According to many, Aksum was an offshoot of certain Semitic kingdoms of southern Arabia, and it eventually controlled the greatest ivory market in eastern Africa. Ethiopia influenced the nearly contemporary empire of Meroe in Sudan. Over the next few centuries, Aksum encroached more and more on Meroe until, when Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century AD, Aksum conquered the Sudanese kingdom. According to tradition, Christianity was adopted by the Ethiopians when a young Syrian named Frumentius, known in Ethiopia as Abba Salama, who grew up in Aksum, converted Emperor Ezana; the young man was later made the first Bishop of Ethiopia in 330 AD. Aksum subsequently expanded southwards and conquered parts of Yemen and southern Arabia. It remained a great power until the rise of Islam in the seventh century precipitated a decline. As Islam expanded, it effectively cut the Christian Ethiopian kingdom off from its Mediterranean trading partners. Muslims also replaced Egyptians in the Red Sea ports. Ethiopians were still allowed to consecrate their Bishops in Cairo, and pilgrims were able to travel across Muslim territory to Jerusalem.

    History:
The EPRDF encountered pockets of resistance throughout the country, and in August fighting broke out between EPRDF forces and the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) - which was pushing for the independence of its own province in the west of the country. EPRDF troops also clashed with local militias from the Afar, Issa and Gurgureh ethnic groups. Skirmishes between the EPRDF and the OLF continued into 1992, severely hampering food-aid distribution. In April the two sides agreed a ceasefire, but the OLF was one of six groups which boycotted the local and regional elections in mid-1993. Despite accusations of intimidation, most of Ethiopia's 33-million electorate voted. The EPRDF obtained over 90 per cent of votes cast, and the OLF withdrew from the transitional government. A piqued OLF continued to demand that the results of the June elections be annulled, and discontent with the transitional Government also flared among the country's ethnic Somalis.
The northern province of Eritrea - previously independent until 1952 when the United Nations merged it into Ethiopia - seceded from Ethiopia, to be run from its capital, Asmara, by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF). Independence was declared in May 1993, and the two countries subsequently signed a number of economic and security agreements. Elections to the new national Constituent Assembly were held in June 1994, with the EPRDF winning 484 of the 547 seats; the elections had been boycotted by the OLF and other opposition groups, who once more alleged that the Meles administration had intimidated their supporters.

He returned to Italy in 1910 and became editor of the socialist newspaper Avanti! 1912-14 where he met the art critic Margheritaq Sarfatti who would turn him toward fascism. In 1914 he founded the newspaper Popolo d'Italia
In Dec. 1914 Mussolini joined a group of Italian socialists who broke away from socialism and formed the first "fascistii" to support Italian expansion to its "natural frontiers" (including Libya) and King Vittorio Emanuel III who declared war against Austria.
In 1915 Mussolini was conscripted into the army, injured by a grenade explosion in training, "the most beautiful moment in his life,'' was invalided out of the army and returned to his newspaper in June 1917.

PROLOGUE The ancient Persians believed there were four great civilizations in the world: Persia; Rome; China and Ethiopia. Ethiopian history is the story of a great sea-faring nation. The Ethiopians worshipped Ashtar, Beher, Meder and Mahrem, the Gods of War and the sea god Poseidon. This was the time, when an African Imperial and Maritime Navy, the greatest naval power of their time, sailed the Red Sea, the Indian Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. At their zenith, they ruled the Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Yemen and Southern Arabia. The Ethiopian city-state of Axum was an imperialist power, who minted their own silver, gold and copper coins and wrote in a written script called Ge'ez. Goods were traded and sold in Spain, on the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, Egypt and India. This was the Axum Empire. ETHIOPIA MAP OF AFRICA AXUM EMPIRE

history of the Early Ages in ethiopia including the Aksumite relation with the Greeks.
    http://www.ethiopiaonweb.com/Ethiopia/History/early_ages.htm
Early Ages Ancient Ethiopia According to Ethiopian tradition, the first people to live in Ethiopia were from the family of Ham, the son of Noah. One of the sons of Ham was Cush. In Ethiopian history Cush is also known as Ethiops, the father of Ethiopia. Part of the Cushites who came from Mesopotamia settled in the Ethiopian Highlands. About 1500 B.B. Queen Hatshepsut of Egypt sent ships down the Red Sea to trade with the Ethiopians and other peoples living along the Red Sea coast. The Egyptians traded grains, glass, dishes, and other goods for ivory, monkeys, incense, gold. and different local products. On a wall of one of Queen Hatshepsut's temples in Egypt is a picture of these trading ships. About 1000 B.C. the Bible says the Queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem to visit King Solomon. She saw all of his great wealth and wisdom and praised God for what she saw. In Ethiopian tradition the queen's name was Makeda, and she had a son by King Solomon who was called Menelik I and became the King of Ethiopia. Some time between 750 and 500 B.C. Semitic peoples began to cross the Southern Red Sea from Arabia into Ethiopia. These were South Arabian tribes with more civilization than the Cushites upon whom they imposed their language and culture. The civilization of these Semitic peoples is called Sabean, and it had a great influence upon ancient Ethiopia. From one of these tribes, the Habeshat, the name Habesh, or Abyssinia, was given to the country. Another tribe, the Agazi , gave its name its name to Geez, one of the oldest languages of Ethiopia. Slowly the Cushites who were probably the peoples to live in Ethiopia and the Semites who came later to Ethiopia became one people. Over the years they built a kingdom around Axum in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands.

License Plate History of Ethiopia and Eritrea These two nations will be covered together because of their shared license plate history. Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world. Before there was Greece or Rome there was Ethiopia. Its history extends back to the time of the Egyptian pharoahs. The population of Ethiopia is currently around 59,000,000 with about 60,000 vehicles. The population of Eritrea is around 3,600,000. There are about 5000 vehicles in Eritrea. The history of license plates in Ethiopia and Eritrea can be divided into five periods. The first period was the old Kingdom of Ethiopia up to 1936. The second period was the period of Italian occupation. In Ethiopia this was 1936-41, in Eritrea this was 1896-1941. The third period is the Kingdom of Ethiopia from 1941-74. During the first part of this period 1941-52, Eritrea was administered by the British. In 1952 Eritrea was unified with Ethiopia in a federation somewhat against the wishes of Eritreans, thus beginning a long war for independence. The fourth period is the Republic of Ethiopia 1974 to the present. In Eritrea this period is from 1974-93. The last period covers plate issues of the independent Rephblic of Eritrea 1993 to the present. Throughout most of their history Eritrea and Ethiopia used one line plates on the front of vehicles and one or more commonly two line plates on the rear. Throughout this history, motorcycles use the same plate series as other vehicles. They are, however smaller and two line motorcycle plates are common. Other vehicles use both two line and one line plates.

In Prehistory , it was the home of the earliest hominids on this earth. Its traditional history stretches back to the time of King Solomon. Few know much of the mighty Axumite Empire that grew up in the north of the country after the birth of Christ and which was a major trading centre for some seven hundred years. Neither have many people heard of the awe-inspiring rock-hewn churches that were constructed during the Middle Ages in Lalibela high on the Ethiopian plateau. Since that time, the country has had very varied fortunes in all sorts of ways. Gondar castle With frequent incursions from neighbouring lands and particularly from the influences of Islam, social and political development was somewhat piecemeal for a long time, with notable periods of relative peace and stability such as that provided by the rule of King Fasiledes in the 17th century in Gondar.

With the many findings slowly but certain a line becomes clear about men's evolution. 'Lucy' the oldest complete skeleton; Ethiopians prefer to call her Dinquinesh (Thou art Wonderfull), can be seen in the National Museum in Addis Ababa. In Tigray, Northern Ethiopia, near Yeha a temple is located which shows great resembles with comparable buildings in Yemen. They estimate this building being from the 5th century BC. In the 14th century Ethiopian history became written down for the first time in the 'Kebra Naghast' (The Glory of the Kings). It's about the Solomonic dynasty that starts with the birth of Melenik 1st, child of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Sheba travelled to Palestine to meet Solomon , famous for his wisdom, and out of there short affair the first King of Ethiopia, Menelik 1st was born. According to this legend the last Emperor Haile Selassy was a straight descendant from Menelik 1st. Or shall we start with the 19th century founding fathers of the modern Ethiopia, the Emperors Tewrodos, Yohannes and Menelik 2th, who strove to unity of the by violent conflicts torn country.

High forests, either coniferous or broadleafed, were the climax vegetation of 35 - 40 percent of Ethiopia before human settlement took place. With the inclusion of savanna woodlands some 66 percent of the country was covered with forest or woodlands at that time. Over the last 5000 years, there has been progressive deforestation which has accelerated tremendously during the last century as the country's population has grown (Wood, 1990). Different sources indicate that about 35 - 40 percent of the country's land area was covered with high forests at the turn of the 19 century (Britenbach, 1961). However, rapid population growth (3 percent per year), extensive forest clearing for cultivation and over-grazing, movement of political centers, and exploitation of forests for fuelwood and construction materials without replanting has reduced the forest area of the country to 16 percent in the 1950's and 3.1 percent in 1982 (UNEP, 1983).Further estimates of the distribution of forest and woodland areas made on the basis of information from LANDSAT imagery (1979) revealed that 2.8 percent of the land surface is under forest and woodland (Kuru, 1990; MOA, 1991; Table 1). HISTORY
Under the Emperors Theodore II (1855-68), Johannes IV (1872-89), and Menelik II (1889-1913), the kingdom began to emerge from its medieval isolation. When Menelik II died, his grandson, Lij Iyassu, succeeded to the throne but soon lost support because of his Muslim ties. He was deposed in 1916 by the Christian nobility, and Menelik's daughter, Zewditu, was made empress. Her cousin, Ras Tafari Makonnen (1892-1975), was made regent and successor to the throne. In 1930, after the empress died, the regent, adopting the throne name Haile Selassie, was crowned emperor. His reign was interrupted in 1936 when Italian Fascist forces invaded and occupied Ethiopia. The emperor was forced into exile in England despite his plea to the League of Nations for intervention. Five years later, the Italians were defeated by British and Ethiopian forces, and the emperor returned to the throne. After a period of civil unrest which began in February 1974, the aging Haile Selassie I was deposed on September 12, 1974, and a provisional administrative council of soldiers, known as the Derg ("committee") seized power from the emperor and installed a government which was socialist in name and military in style. The Derg summarily executed 59 members of the royal family and ministers and generals of the emperor's government; Emperor Haile Selassie was strangled in the basement of his palace on August 22, 1975.
