Ethiopia Time and Date Ethiopia History Back to Top During the 1st millennium bc, Semitic people from Saba’ (Hebrew Sheba) crossed the Red Sea and conquered the Hamite on the coast of what was eventually to become the Ethiopian Empire. By the 2nd century ad the victors had established the kingdom of Aksum. The kingdom was ruled by the Solomonid dynasty, so called because the kings claimed direct descent from the biblical king Solomon and the queen of Sheba. Aksum converted to Christianity, belonging to the same tradition as the Coptic Christians of Egypt. It flourished for a while, but beginning in about the 7th century the kingdom declined as the Solomonids lost control of section after section of their realm. Early in the 10th century the Solomonid dynasty was overthrown and replaced by the Zagwe dynasty, the ruling family of a region on the central plateau known as Lasta. Sometime between the 8th and 6th millennia BC, pastoralism and then agriculture developed in northern Africa and southwestern Asia, and, as the population grew, an ancient tongue spoken in this region fissured into the modern languages of the Afro-Asiatic (formerly Hamito-Semitic) family. This family includes the Cushitic and Semitic languages now spoken in Ethiopia. During the 2nd millennium BC, cereal grains and the use of the plow were introduced into Ethiopia from the region of the Sudan, and a people speaking Ge'ez (a Semitic language) came to dominate the rich northern highlands of Tigray. There, in the 7th century BC, they established the kingdom of Da'amat. This kingdom dominated lands to the west, obtaining ivory, tortoiseshell, rhinoceros horn, gold, silver, and slaves and trading them to South Arabian merchants.

Ethiopia - History
In the middle ages many great churches were built in Ethiopia. This one is at Lalibela. Legend says the huge churches here were inspired by a dream of King Lalibela, and built with the help of angels. Anthropologists believe that, four million years ago, a site in Ethiopia was the home of our earliest ancestors From 300 BC, the kingdom of Alum formed and expanded; its kings claimed direct descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The city of Alum still exists today. In 1896, during the reign of Emperor Menelik II, Ethiopia defeated Italy at the Battle of Adwa, which was considered the first victory of any African nation over a European colonial power. From 1930 to 1974, Tafari Makonnen, known as Haile Selassie, reigned. In the Second World War, between 1936 and 1941, Ethiopia was occupied by Italian forces. It was liberated by the joint forces of the Resistance Movement and the British army. Two years later Eritrea, which had been annexed by Ethiopia in 1962, gained its independence after thirty years of war. In 1994, a new constitution was written, and in May 1995, representatives to the Parliament were elected and Dr. Negasso Gidada was elected President. Ethiopians were given a strong say in their government at local and regional levels and new policies were introduced to try to revitalise the economy.

However, behind these images lies a long, rich and utterly complicated history that dates back to biblical times. Ethiopia is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. We have set out in this section to provide a brief history of the evolution of modern Ethiopia. Everything You Wanted To Know About Eritrea But Were Afraid To Ask
It was a warm summer's day in 1985. I was facing the prospect of leaving home in order to continue my education at university and, like many others of my age, I was wondering what the big wide world held in store for me. But my immediate concern, reclining at the dining room table, was how full I felt after enjoying a nourishing lunch cooked by my mother. I switched on the TV, to be met, however, by a news report of starving Ethiopians, flies crawling over their eyes and into their mouths. When mother brought me a bowl of succulent strawberries topped with fresh cream, I broke down in tears. On a warm summer's day thirteen years later, a distant memory surfaced while I was reading a newspaper article about how Eritrea (now independent from Ethiopia) was trying to recover from the devastating legacy of years of war, drought and famine. Starvation, strawberries, tears and an infant state's first, uncertain steps on its own - a few pieces from a jigsaw of many thousands. I decided to try to put some of this jigsaw together, to see the wider picture of which these few pieces were a part. The picture turned out to be a case study of how millions of people suffer when trampled by the awesome human and natural forces of political and environmental disaster. Hopefully, it can also be seen as a lesson which warns us of some of the larger pitfalls of political folly and which teaches us to respect the demands of the physical environment while we make our demands upon it.

Ancient Ethiopia, South Arabia, and the Sabeans:
Re-Examining the Assumptions
(Originally posted to USENET - November 1996)
As mentioned elsewhere, the standard history about Sabaens migrating from Yemen to Ethiopia is undergoing major revision. In his book "The Sign and the Seal" (1992) G. Hancock quotes from a paper written by J. Pirenne, an expert on the archaeology of South Arabia, in which she argues that Sabaen civilization was developed in Ethiopia first before crossing the Red Sea to be shared with Yemen:
"The Sabaens...arrived first of all in Ethiopian Tigray, and entered Yemen via the Red Sea Coast....This conclusion, which is the absolute contrary to all recognized views, is the only one...to explain the facts and do them justice" (1989)

G. Hancock didn't outline the basis of J. Pirennes argument, but considering that she is one of the foremost scholars in interpreting ancient South Arabian inscriptions (she started publishing in the 1950s) it seems natural to assume that she was addressing the problem of the sudden appearance in South Arabia of Epigraphic or Monumental South Arabian (MSA) writing. This pre-Aksumite MSA script also occurs in Ethiopia, however in South Arabia, there is apparently little evidence showing evolution in the lettering style. Archaeologists expect to see such an evolution if the writing was developed locally. Perhaps J. Pirenne has found this missing evolutionary period in Ethiopia? If so then I suppose the scholars in this field should rename the MSA script as MNE (Monumental North Ethiopian)?

54. Ethiopia - Ethiopian History - Aksumite Coins
Overview of coins of Aksum; reason of origin, relation to the Romans and Christianity, and description.
http://www.ethiopianhistory.com/aksum/coinage.html
Aksumite Coins
270 CE - 600 CE The Aksumites first began producing coins around 270 CE, under the rule of king Endubis. Aksum was the first African civilization, not including African cities under the Roman Empire, to produce coins (Pankhurst 26).  The creation of a system of currency is related to the intricate society that had evolved in Aksum. Use of currency made trade more efficient and government taxation and collection of other payments more standard. The rate of trade increased significantly, consequently stimulating Aksum’s economy (Munro-Hay 181).  Aksumite coins were issued in gold, silver, and bronze. King Endubis used Roman weighting standards to issue his coins. The first Aksumite coins used had writing in Greek. This explains why the Aksumites began to use coins; to participate in the highly influenced Greco-Roman trade of the Red Sea.

In a remote part of Tigray region, Yeha lies several hours drive from the more accessible city of Axum , The journey takes you on rough tracks through dramatic highland scenery and eventually ends in a beautiful and serene agricultural hamlet. It is there, close to a much more recent Christian church, that you may see the towering ruins of Yehas Temple of the Moon - built more than 2,500 years ago, in Sabaean times. The temple is an imposing rectangular edifice. Though it has long since lost its roof and upper storeys the ruins stand some twelve metres in height. As evening falls, the temple's finely dressed and polished limestone reflects the glow of the setting sun with a warmth and brilliance that cannot be accidental. The huge, precisely fitted blocks from which the inward- inclining walls are formed seem to bear out ancient opinion that Sabaean buildings could be filled with water without a single drop being lost.

60. Ethiopia - Ethiopian History - Aksum
The origination of the peoples of Aksum, their lives, and culture.
http://www.ethiopianhistory.com/aksum
Aksum
300 BCE - 531 CE Aksum’s foundation is suggested to be as early as 300 BCE. Very little is known of the time period between the mid-first millennium BCE to the beginning of Aksum’s flourish, thought to be around the first century CE. There is little in common between the Aksumites and the earlier pre-Aksumite civilizations (Munro-Hay 1991, 4). The Aksumite kingdom was located in the northern province of Tigray and there it remained the capital of Ethiopia until the seventh century CE. Aksum owes its prosperity to its location. The Blue Nile basin and the Afar depression are both within a close proximity of Aksum. The former is rich of gold and the latter of salt: both materials having a highly important use to the Aksumites. Aksum was also within an accessible distance to the port of Adulis, on the coast of the Red Sea, hence maintaining trade relations with other nations, such as Egypt, India, and Arabia. Aksum’s ‘fertile’ and ‘well-watered’ location produced enough food for its population as well as its exotic animals, such as elephants and rhinoceros (Pankhurst 1998, 22-3). Aksum inherited a culture highly influenced by South Arabia. The Aksumites' language
