Introduction to Stoic Ethics by Michael S. Russo Molloy College, Department of Philosophy Show me a man who though sick is happy, though in danger is happy, though dying is happy, though condemned to exile is happy, though in disrepute is happy. Show him! By the gods, I would fain see a Stoic. — Epictetus I. The Foundations of Stoic Ethics The origin of the Stoic discussion on the happy life is actually found in the Nicomachean Ethics 1095a 18, where Aristotle observes that happiness ( eudaimonia ) is the end of life for all human beings. The question of what constitutes happiness, however, is a matter of some contention between Aristotle and the Stoa. In Aristotle's opinion, happiness is "an activity of the soul in accordance with perfect virtue." Virtue here is defined as a proper disposition of the soul in pursuit of the good. Up until this point Aristotle and the Stoics are in complete agreement; it is when Aristotle describes the nature of the sumum bonum that conflict arises. In Chapter One of the

This web site consists of a series of linked essays which present my philosophical ideas. It is organised as follows.
These essays are very much reports of work in progress. At the present time only 7 of the planned 30 essays have been completed and placed in this site. More will be added as and when they are completed.
Fundamentals All of these essays are informed by my agreement with Dummett on the central role of Frege's thought in modern philosophy. Dummett says: "... in concentrating so single-mindedly on the area in which he worked, Frege also gave to it a central place in philosophy; and, in doing this, he achieved a revolution as overwhelming as that of Descartes."
    Dummett: "Frege, Philosophy of Language"
, 1st Edition, p665) Elsewhere Dummett conjectures that Frege provided philosophy with that which it lacked for so long, namely a central organising methodology. "Only with Frege was the proper object of philosophy finally established: namely, first, that the goal of philosophy is the analysis of the structure of

Since arriving in Berkeley, Diana has acquired an addiction to bing cherries. Diana's current research is in ethics, with a particular emphasis on virtue ethics and moral psychology. She is also interested in applied ethics (in particular, military ethics and information ethics), political philosophy, the philosophy of action, and ancient Greek philosophy. Diana does not speak American English. This site is primarily intended as a resource for students in her sections. It contains information about her sections and her grading philosophy, as well as copies of most section (and some course) handouts. Environmental Ethics Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
Introduction Environmental ethics is a topic of applied ethics which examines the moral basis of environmental responsibility. In these environmentally conscious times, virtually everyone agrees that we need to be environmentally responsible. Toxic waste contaminates ground water, oil spills destroy shore lines, fossil fuels produce carbon dioxide thus adding to the greenhouse effect, and use of fluorocarbon gasses depletes the earth's protecting ozone layer. The goal of environmental ethics, then, is not to convince us that we should be concerned about the environment most of us already are. Instead, environmental ethics focuses on the moral foundation of environmental responsibility, and how far this responsibility extends. There are three distinct theories of moral responsibility to the environment. Although each supports environmental responsibility, their approaches are radically different.

Leopold's Ecocentrism To help us develop a proper ecological conscience, Leopold argues that we need a specific mental image to focus on. He offers the image of the land pyramid. The land pyramid is the class of all food chains, where the higher levels depend on everything beneath it. From bottom to top, the basic layers of the pyramid are those of soil, plants, insects, insect eating animals, omnivores, and carnivores. Humans fall into the omnivore category along with raccoons and bears. Leopold explains that there is a continuous and upward flow of food energy in the pyramid, and that obstructions to the flow of energy at any level will damage the whole. Some geographical regions of the world, such as Europe and Japan, have been able to sustain human imposed environmental changes without damage. But other regions of the world have been less fortunate.
