The Esperanto League for North America (ELNA) is sponsoring San Francisco State University's 27th Annual Summer Esperanto Workshop . Every year, this world-renowned course has drawn between 50-95 students from around the world. The Instructors are both International, and World-Class!
These classes run for three intensive weeks, for one half-day (morning or afternoon). Students who complete the class receive three semester units of fully transferable (humanities) University credits. In 1996, the courses will be held from June 24 through July 12.
In many cases, students sign up for one class to learn, and attend the next level during the 'other' half of the day. By staying on-campus, in dormitory housing, students can immerse themselves in the language, living 3 weeks in 'Esperanto-land'.

The International Language that works!
Every year, our world seems smaller. Ships carry a thousand items between countries. Jets carry passengers across oceans and around the world. Satellites bring us live television coverage from Europe and Asia. Every year, Americans in every walk of life communicate more and more with people of other countries. One barrier remains... As a result of this tremendous increase in contacts with the outside world, Americans are realizing that there is still a major barrier to international communication the language barrier! Americans have long heard the cliche that "Wherever you go, people speak English." In fact, at most ten percent of the world speaks English! Often, in other countries, only people in the best hotels of the largest cities can use English, and even they are often not very fluent. Anyone who has visited a foreign country and struggled with the language barriers understands this. Americans are at last discovering what the rest of the world has long known: there is a real need for an international language. Fortunately, there is such a language...

Early Developments
The basis for Esperanto was published in 1887 by Dr. Lejzer (Ludovic) Zamenhof, a brilliant and idealistic Jewish ophthalmologist in Warsaw. The idea of a planned international language was not a new one, but Zamenhof contributed the crucial insight that it must develop through collective use; accordingly, he restricted his initial proposal to a minimalist grammatical sketch, a vocabulary of some 900 words, some samples of poetry and prose, and a persuasive introductory essay. He believed that people from any background could learn the language 'as if in play', thanks to a transparent morphology and syntax freed from most of the complexities and inconsistencies of European languages (for an accessible overview, see Janton 1993: 41-89). Linked to Zamenhof's linguistic work was a progressively developed and refined critique of the links between language and nationalism (Zamenhof 1929; Lieberman 1979).
Major Contributions
The 'experiments' in question resemble the Columbia study mentioned above, in that they have usually set out to measure the effects of Esperanto instruction on the subsequent learning of other languages. The logic behind this approach is easy to understand. Esperanto's marginal position in the global language order has meant that teachers have often seen their strongest argument as presenting it as a 'modern Latin' for the beginning language learner. In justification it is argued that Esperanto's regularity and morphological transparency provide an ideal model for students to take the first tentative steps away from their mother tongue. In other words, learning Esperanto leads to an awareness of linguistic structure which can be built on in learning other languages.

At least, all the "samideanoj" can use the best Operating System in the "lingvo de cxampionoj" : the ESPERANTO. :-) Please just copy this file to the "LOCALE:Languages/" directory, then load the Locale preferences editor and set your preferred language as "Esperanto", save the configuration by clicking the "Save" button, reboot your computer and that's all. Now you need two more things: translations in esperanto of the programs you use (including Workbench) and a set of ISO-3 compatible fonts in order to display the ^ characters. You might also download an archive called EsperantaLokal.lha which seems to come with some translations and some ISO-3 fonts. NOTE: If you know how to code .language files please contact me and tell me how you do that... I'll thank you very much! Enjoy!

General Comments
Through almost unbroken work of collecting data over a period of over 70 years the Library of the International Esperanto Museum (IEM) has created the world's largest collection of material on planned languages.
Planned languages
Planned languages are an important aspect of human creativity. They are the subject of that branch of learning known since the first half of the 20th century as interlinguistics. After a few efforts in the Middle Ages the first developed planned languages appeared in the 16th century. They were to serve as instruments of logical thought. A number of outstanding personalities in European intellectual life turned their attention to the problem, among them Francis Bacon, Jan A. Komensky (Comenius), Rene Descartes, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz. From the middle of the 19th century a new type of planned language appeared, at first described as world auxiliary languages. As a result of the increase in international relations the pragmatic aspect was paramount. The problem of international communication became more and more acute. The creators of world auxiliary languages wanted to find a solution, hence they put great stress on practical use. The necessary qualities were facility of learning and speaking, internationality and naturalness.

What Is Esperanto?
Esperanto is a neutral international language created by L L Zamenhof in the end of the 19th century. After more than a century since its inception, Esperanto is now spoken by hundreds of thousands - in fact, probably millions - of people all over the world. Today the objective of Esperanto is the same as always: to become the one foreign language everybody studies and learns.
Is It Easy to Learn?
While no foreign language is easy to master, Esperanto was intentionally designed to be as easy to learn as possible. Its grammar is concise and highly regular (no need to memorize verb conjugations), and its basic vocabulary consists of two thousand words or so - tens of thousands of words are formed with regular endings and other similar devices. You should be able to put Esperanto in use several times faster than any national language like French or Russian.
How Do I Get to Learn It?
You can learn the basics of Esperanto on the Internet with a personal tutor free of charge. The Free Esperanto Course consists of ten lessons with exercises. You study the lessons by yourself, do the exercises and send them to your tutor by email. Your tutor checks your exercises and answers your questions. In the end you will receive a diploma.

Esperanto - The International Language
In 1887, Polish physician L.L. Zamenhof published a book under his pseudonym called Doctor Esperanto's International Language and Complete Handbook . This initial text, which was both a tutorial and the manifesto for a new social movement, spread the word of a new international language known as Esperanto. At the time, there had been dozens of international languages already created. Many of these artificial languages were like Esperanto in the fact that they were created to be an axillary language, that is, a second language for people around the word in order to allow for improved global communication. Of all of the artificial languages, it was Esperanto which caught on the best. Though today there are only between a few hundred thousand and a few million speakers of Esperanto around the word, those devoted to advancing the goal of the international language are as dedicated as ever. There over 100 newspapers, magazines, and journals printed in Esperanto and many books are written in or translated into the language by devotees of the language and its movement.
