Eritrea emerged from its long war of independence in 1993 only to plunge once again into war, first with Yemen and then, more devastatingly, with its old adversary, Ethiopia.
It now faces the gigantic task of rebuilding a country ravaged by more than 30 years of conflict, its infrastructure, buildings and fields destroyed. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA A former Italian colony, Eritrea was occupied by the British in 1941. In 1952 the United Nations resolved to establish it as an autonomous entity federated with Ethiopia as a compromise between Ethiopian claims for sovereignty and Eritrean aspirations for independence. However, 10 years later the Ethiopian emperor, Haile Selassie, decided to annex it, triggering a 32-year-long armed struggle. This culminated in independence shortly after an alliance of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) and a coalition of Ethiopian resistance movements defeated Haile Selassie's communist successor, Mengistu Haile Mariam. In 1993, in a referendum supported by Ethiopia, the Eritrean people voted almost unanimously in favour of independence, leaving Ethiopia landlocked.

The US has criticised Afewerki's government
By Alex Last
BBC, Asmara The Eritrean Government has reacted furiously to criticism from the US State Department. The US State Department called on the Eritrean Government to release two local employees of the US embassy in Eritrea who have been in detention since last year; Ali Alamin and Kiflom Gebremichael. It also urged the Eritrean Government to grant them an open and fair trail and "respect fundamental human rights." The Eritrean Foreign Ministry released a statement which said it totally rejected the state department's position, and called on it to refrain from unwarranted intervention. But the statement also contains some surprises, with the government accusing the previous administration of President Bill Clinton of employing the CIA to seek to unlawfully change the government in Asmara, during the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia. 'Conspiracy' In essence, the Eritrean statement implies that the top 11 Eritrean government officials, including former leaders of the liberation movement, who publicly criticized the Eritrean president after the recent war with Ethiopia, were recruited by the CIA.

History and Government
History: Eritrea contained the main ports of the Aksumite empire, which governed the region, including modern-day Ethiopia, between the fourth and sixth centuries AD. It was also a peripheral part of the Ethiopian kingdom but largely retained its independence before coming under Ottoman rule in the 16th century. Over the next 300 years, control of the territory was disputed between the Ottomans, Ethiopia, Egypt and Italy. In 1889, a treaty between Italy and King Menilek of Ethiopia recognised Italian possessions on the Red Sea coast, which were formally adopted as Italian colonies the following year. These later became essential staging posts for the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1896 and 1935. Eritrea then became one of the six provinces of Italian East Africa, until the Italians were expelled by the British in 1941. After the departure of the British, Eritrea was merged into Ethiopia in a federal arrangement brokered by the UN in 1952 and incorporated fully into Ethiopia ten years later.
Government: Hagerawi Baito (National Assembly), comprising 60 appointed members and 44 representatives of the PFDJ.

Washington, DC In 1991, the new government of just-liberated Eritrea requested the help Bereket Selassie in drafting a constitution for the new nation and he became chair of the Consitutional Commission. Selassie served as Attorney General under Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia but he resigned in 1962. By 1975 he was teaching at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and working with the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front, the start of a long involvement with the party that was eventually to rule Eritrea. Now, however, Professor Selassie is one of the most vocal critics of Eritrea's government. Last October, he was one of thirteen professionals and academics - now dubbed the G-13 or group of 13 - who drafted what they thought would be a private letter to President Isaias Afewerki criticizing government practices and Eritrea's war with Ethiopia. The letter leaked almost immediately bringing the internal argument and criticism over Eritrea's direction to public attention.

Eritrea: two students die in government clampdown
By David Rowan 24 August 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Two students have died and up to 2,000 others are being detained in a detention camp following protests against the government. The camp in Wia, 30 kilometres from the Eritrean port of Massawa, is located in a desert region, and temperatures can reach as high as 49 degrees Centigrade (120 degrees Fahrenheit). It is reported that the students are being detained without adequate food, water and shelter. The students were arrested either in their dormitories or outside the high court where they had gathered to attend a court hearing involving Kesete. They were kept overnight in a soccer stadium before being bussed out to Wia. The 15 represent a section of the Eritrean bourgeoisie who are seeking to distance themselves from Afwerki and are concerned about the growing resentment to his rule. They are all long-standing members of the PFDJ and its forerunner, the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front (EPLF) who supported the war with Ethiopia. It is probable that the opposition to Afwerki within the ruling clique reflects concerns over the loss of support from the West. Those who have recently criticised Afwerki include the Eritrean ambassador to Sweden, Norway and Finland, who resigned her post, and the ambassador to Germany, who was recalled and may face prosecution by the Special Court. Afwerki is known to favour closer relations with Arab countries and hopes to join the League of Arab States.
