Three-day riders are U.S. highlight SYDNEY, Australia (AP) The biggest question for the U.S. equestrians before the Sydney Games would be how to handle the long flight and eight-week quarantine for their horses.
This situation colored many of the decisions concerning team selection, which had to occur earlier than usual going into an Olympics. The next question was how to keep the horses on form during the long quarantine.

SUPPLEMENT NO. 29 DI C/C Cabinet 6/02 REPORT OF THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OLYMPIC SPORTS LIAISON COMMITTEE INFORMATIONAL ITEMS a. Emerging Sports/Gender Equity Update The Olympic Sports Liaison Committee (OSLC) received a report from NCAA staff related to the latest developments for emerging sports. Women's rugby was recently approved by the NCAA Division I membership and there is legislation pending in NCAA Divisions II and III. Bowling, which was approved as an emerging sport in 1999, is close to achieving the goal of having the 40 NCAA programs necessary for an NCAA Championship. b. Student-Athlete Reinstatement Issues The OSLC forwarded a recommendation to Subcommittee on Amateurism and Agents requesting that it consider sponsoring legislation permitting NCAA student-athletes to participate on United States national governing body teams competing in tournaments or events in which prize money is awarded, provided the NCAA student-athlete does not accept any portion of the prize money or assign his or her portion to a third party. Under current legislation, it is not permissible for student-athletes to compete as a member of a U.S. national team in a prize money event without jeopardizing their amateur status regardless of whether they waive their right to accept any prize money that may be won from the team's performance.

    INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AND TRAINING ENDOWMENT
The United States Equestrian Team is the not-for-profit organization whose mission is to select, train, and finance equestrian teams of the highest possible standard in six disciplines administered by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI): dressage, show jumping, eventing, endurance riding, reining, and combined driving. The first three of these are also Olympic sports. In addition, the USET seeks to promote public awareness of and interest in equestrian sport in general, and international competition in particular; to encourage all equestrian athletes to strive for the highest possible standards of performance and conduct in international sport; and to promote the safety and welfare of horse and rider/driver above all other considerations in international training and competition.
The USET affords equestrian athletes the opportunity to "ride or drive for America" without the age and gender limitations inherent in most other sports. Those athletes who are privileged to compete for the United States Equestrian Team are among the very best in the world. They embrace the opportunity to represent the citizens of this nation in World Championship, Pan American and Olympic competitions as amateur athletes for the sheer honor of doing so, often at great personal cost.

    EQUESTRIAN About

Equestrian events were included in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1900 and then in 1912, in a format very similar to that which will be used at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
Equestrian consists of three disciplines: Jumping, Dressage and Eventing (Three-Day Event).
    EQUESTRIAN - Dressage
Equestrian is the only Olympic sport where man and animal are established team-mates, and one of the few where men and women compete on equal terms. It is the ultimate in team sports, a horse and rider working together for years to hone feats of grace, daring, agility and speed. Chariot races and horse riding appeared in Greece's ancient Games, but most of the equestrian programme as we know it began in the Olympic Games of 1912. It includes three disciplines - dressage, jumping and three-day event - each with individual and team competition.
    COMPETITION
Often described as horses performing ballet, dressage has changed little since the Renaissance. The term stems from a French word for training, and European cavalrymen developed the idea for use on the battlefield and the parade ground. The horse performs set movements, or tests, in response to its rider's subtle aids and signals. The event is conducted over three rounds. In the first two, horse and rider perform a set routine of dressage movements, including passages, pirouettes and piaffes in a walk, trot and canter. The third round is freestyle, with routines individually choreographed and performed to music.

STONELICK TOWNSHIP - The creme de la creme of North American sports horses has galloped into Greater Cincinnati. These are the continent's best steeds suited for Olympic equestrian competitions. They are called "warmbloods" - first bred in Europe about 300 years ago to develop the best military horses, said Janet Paxton. Her Paxton Farm on Ohio 132 is hosting the 100-day Stallion Performance Test conducted by the Federation of North American Sport Horse Registries. The 100-day event culminates in a three-day program that has brought international equestrian judges and riders from Europe and elsewhere, to this rural landscape east of Cincinnati. It ends today with cross country competition, a show program and final judging.

A Reprint from Ride Magazine with permission
By Gloria Gossard This is the second of a three-part series on the history of equine sports at the Olympic Games. This month we look at the official welcome to the Games in 1912 to its full acceptance in 1928. Count von Rosen and his fellow horsemen could well have succumbed to severe disappointment and depression with the cancellation of their equestrian events for the 1908 London Olympic Games. They preserved, however, and with the support of Baron Courbetin, president of the Olympic Congress, the horse-loving country of Sweden was selected host of the 1912 Games. As Master of the Horse in Sweden, von Rosen was now assured that a stadium large enough to hold equestrian events would be built. The enthusiasm of the Swedish riders was without bounds. Additional support came during the Olympic Congress, held in Berlin, Germany in 1909. Count d'Usseaux of Italy suggested von Rosen's three proposed events (dressage, pentathlon and the equine game Jea de Rose) be expanded to include horse racing and polo. Within a short time, the international equestrian world was buzzing with excitementthey would soon be part of the Olympiad! The Berlin conference finalized inclusion of equine events within the Olympiad. Polo replaced Jea de Rose, and the new events were named Prize Riding, Prize Jumping and The Military. The three events have since remained the basic venue for the equestrian phase, and today are listed as Dressage, Stadium Jumping and the Three-Day Event. The Pentathlon, representing other forms of athletic prowess, was moved to a separate venue. All the equine sports were geared to cavalrymen from various nations, since civilian riders were not eligible to compete at the time.

Olympic Equestrian: The Sports and the Stories from Stockholm to Sydney
Jennifer O. Bryant Few sights are as enthralling as rider and horse, in perfect partnership, riding for the glory of their country. Whether it is the thrill of cross-country, the bravado of show jumping, or the elegance of dressage, the Olympic equestrian disciplines offer horsemanship and athleticism at the highest levels. Olympic Equestrian chronicles the origins of the three-day event, show jumping, and dressage and their segue into the mainstream Olympic games. Author Jennifer O. Bryant relates the important developments that have shaped the horse world and equestrian competition as we know it today. She also shares the stories of such great Olympic partnerships as Mark Todd and Charisma, Hans Gunter Winkler and Halla, and Nicole Uphoff and Rembrandt. In addition, Bryant discusses how the Games are organized, teams selected, and horses transported.
