Science education key to environmental restoration
SEATTLE, WA Leaders in innovative environmental education are preparing the next generation of professionals. Some of these educators and industry experts will share their approaches at Spectrum 96, the international conference on nuclear and hazardous waste management being held in Seattle, August 18-23. An environmental education panel, teacher workshop and student demonstrations will help define the current status of science and engineering education and highlight the needs of industries that will hire people to work in environmental restoration. "To successfully address the nation's environmental problems, we need young people," said Clyde Frank, deputy assistant secretary of the Department of Energy's Office of Science and Technology. "We need students to be well trained and to ensure that a good number of them develop a passion for scientific disciplines that will lead them to a meaningful career in environmental science and cleanup," he said. "The private sector and government, working together, can do this by assisting young students as they begin to explore and discover the world of science," Frank added.

John McCarthy, Idaho Conservation League, 208.345.6942 ext. 14 Boise - Conservationists are disappointed Governor Dirk Kempthorne did not present a positive environmental agenda in his State of the State address today. The governor missed the opportunity to lead the way to solve environmental problems and to protect environmental treasures. Instead, the governor plans to continue court fights over national public land policy and endangered species, which are likely to be losing battles. "Governor Kempthorne urged the Idaho Legislature to look forward on many social, economic and education issues but he turned backward on natural resource issues," said John McCarthy, conservation director of the Idaho Conservation League. "The governor had the chance to move forward on improved land management programs, which could enhance all citizens' appreciation and use of our natural resources." McCarthy said. "Unfortunately he'd rather fight losing political agendas rather than help improve environmental policies that can frame a brighter rural economy in these changing times." "Recognition of the great conservation legacy of the late Jack Hemingway was a welcome and important part of Governor Kempthorne¹s speech," said Dallas Gudgell, lobbyist for Idaho Conservation League. "But the same leadership to protect our treasures and to solve our problems is needed now."

Council on Environmental Quality President George W. Bush tours the Squires Peak Fire Area in Medford, Ore., with Ron Wenker of the Medford Bureau of Land Management Properties District, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002. The Council on Environmental Quality coordinates federal environmental efforts and works closely with agencies and other White House offices in the development of environmental policies and initiatives. The Council's Chair, who is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, serves as the principal environmental policy adviser to the President. In addition, CEQ reports annually to the President on the state of the environment; oversees federal agency implementation of the environmental impact assessment process; and acts as a referee when agencies disagree over the adequacy of such assessments. Congress established CEQ within the Executive Office of the President as part of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA). Additional responsibilities were provided by the Environmental Quality Improvement Act of 1970.

Communications Organizations 2001 The way people get their news has changed dramatically in recent years. Groups in the environmental movement have moved quickly to keep up, and foundations are focusing grant making on communications activities. This report is a compilation of environmental news organizations, video providers, communications strategy groups and others who work to spread messages about public health and the environment. We have also included a few questions that you may want to consider before funding communications activities.

    Going Online: Environmental Media
and Public Relations in a Digital Age This publication examines the importance of online news and is designed to provide practical advice to nonprofit communications experts on how they can best take advantage of what's new in news- and information-dissemination. The world of online media has expanded so quickly that many in the environmental and public health community have not adjusted communications practices and priorities. Even with the recent upheavals in the online news business, the Internet remains a critical and still under-utilized outlet for environmental stories. The growth and importance of the Internet as an information source should influence any organization's strategic decisions on how to conduct media and communications. Going Online provides a step-by-step guide to online news vehicles, from how to reach online reporters to building a media website that all reporters can use. It also features interviews with online editors and environmental reporters who highlight their needs and priorities.
