Cambridge, MA Jane Pickering of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, formerly of the Oxford University Museum, has been appointed director of the MIT Museum. Ms. Pickering, 33, assumed her post August 3 after relocating from Oxford, England. "Jane brings a new and inventive energy to the MIT Museum," said Alan Brody, Associate Provost for the Arts. "She is coming to us with a fresh vision, a passion for the very idea of a museum in an academic setting, an excitement about the particular setting of MIT and a genuine dedication to the educational mission of both the Museum and MIT." "The search committee was very impressed by the range of Jane's experience," said Harriet Ritvo, Arthur J. Conner Professor of History, who led the search advisory committee. "She has been responsible for all aspects of the curation and development of several important collections in England. She has established relationships between the collections and a variety of audiences, from academic specialists to elementary school children. She views museums both as a scientist and as an enthusiastic member of the public. And she is wonderfully articulate in explaining the relationship between all these things." At MIT, Ms. Pickering will lead a re-examination of the Museum's mission and programs, evaluating the role of the Museum at MIT as well as its relation to the Greater Boston area and its existing museums. Her aim is to work with all members of the MIT community and, in particular, faculty who have not in the past been closely associated with the Museum. Specific goals include articulating the focus of the collections and actively seeking material with direct associations with MIT; widening the scope of exhibitions to address all fields of MIT endeavor and enhancing the Museum's public outreach and educational activities.

Field Museum experts call for more activist role
Science Dec. 7. They must step into the limelight and lead
    activist

They can accomplish this in many ways. Museums, zoos and botanic gardens must focus more on conservation, make collections and data more accessible to others, collect and disseminate information faster, draw new audiences into the conservation camp and engage local communities (in the United States and anywhere around the world) to take immediate action.
Because of their strong scientific base and objectivity, natural history museums are well positioned to help governments identify environmental problems and solutions, help local communities establish priorities and help conservation groups allocate resources and construct models for restoration.
For example, museums, zoos and botanic gardens were central to the creation of Chicago Wilderness, an unprecedented partnership of some 130 public and private organizations dedicated to restoring prairies and woodlands, marshes and meadows in the Chicago region. And by working with international and local partners, The Field Museum recently played a key role in creating a national park in Peru the size of Connecticut.

Holly Hayes is the definitive home for wildlife records locally and is recognised as a national model for Biological Records. The Centre acts as a Wildlife Information Service and produces a range of wildlife and countryside surveys. The Centre's staff work with local communities and receive valuable information from local recorders. The Centre is also the base for Heritage Watch , a project which supports a network of Heritage Wardens across Leicestershire and Rutland. Staff at Holly Hayes can also help with access to natural history collections. Access for people with disabilities is partially available, as a ramp to the house is in place. Assistance may be required for some areas of the ground floor, and the upper floors are not accessible. There are toilets and limited on-site parking.

    Visits to museums
Indicator 18.2. Visits to museums 1985-95. Source: National Board of Antiquities.
    DESCRIPTION
The number of visitors to museums reflects people’s interest in cultural history, art, and the natural sciences. Museums preserve our cultural heritage and offer opportunities to get acquainted with it. Museums play an important role in strengthening community awareness, local self-esteem, and national identity. According to a nationwide census made in 1995, Finland has 921 museums. Of these, 134 had full-time staff who were responsible for a total of 265 museum units. These museums accounted for ca. 75 per cent of total museum visits, and are the ones displayed in the figure above.
    TRENDS
During the past 75 years the number of museums in Finland has grown from 50 to nearly a thousand. The number of visitors has increased correspondingly. Visitor numbers to full-time museums are also rising as new museums annually join this category: from 1985 to 1995 the addition was nearly 100 locations. The cultural history museums’ share of annual visitors has increased notably, but this is affected by new museums and museum units belonging chiefly to this category. Nearly half of all Finns visit a museum at least once annually. Museums and churches are also the most popular destinations of foreign visitors to Finland.
