In 1992, EPA awarded a grant to the University of Texas at Arlington to establish and operate an Air Pollution Training Center for state and local air agency employees of the southwestern states. The University then provided and remodeled the facility now known as the Southwest Environmental Education Training Center (SWEET Center) to house this new Air Pollution Training Academy, which opened in February 1993.
The Center now offers training for the environmental professional on a wide spectrum of issues. Topic areas include design and field evaluation of pollution control devices, regulatory compliance, pollution prevention, environmental auditing, site assessment, remote sensing, atmospheric dispersion modeling, continuous emissions monitoring, combustion system evaluation, environmental sampling, asbestos and lead remediation, and hazardous materials handling. Courses are developed and presented by national and international experts with direct experience in their topic areas and skill in the instruction of working professionals.

B EES is a nonprofit organization that works with educators to develop innovative environmental education programs which are multidisciplinary, inquiry-based, and customized around a local issue. Our programs engage middle to high school students in an in-depth and hands-on examination of an issue, incorporate many perspectives, and include the use of technology tools, exposure to career opportunities, and practice in using workplace readiness skills. Our mission is to improve environmental knowledge and decision making among students and teachers. We are a broad-based coalition of resources from the academic, corporate, environmental, media, government, and community sectors. BEES connects schools to local resources - experts, curriculum and resource materials, facilities, and funding sources to implement and sustain their programs.

Who we are . . .
What we do . . .
Although we occasionally offer workshops, etc., the Council is mainly a coordinating agency. We coordinate environmental education in the Commonwealth in several ways. We provide standards for teaching about the environment in Kentucky.
These standards are a subset of the Kentucky Department of Education Program of Studies.
We maintain a database of resources that are available across the state. We also provide links to valuable national environmental education web sites Other Instructional Materials SOLID WASTE CURRICULUM OUTDOOR CLASSROOM GUIDE In 1997-99, the Council brought together over 150 people from across the state to create a Master Plan for Environmental Education in the state. The 20 recommendations in that plan offer a framework for improving the environmental literacy of Kentuckians in the coming years.
