General Information
Program
Function. Civil engineers plan, design, construct, and operate systems and structures that are of great importance to society. These systems and structures include bridges, highways, dams, airports, and water treatment plants. Training. Students who decide to study civil engineering receive training in math, basic science, computer science, and engineering science. They also study communications, humanities, and social science to help them understand the human and social factors involved in civil engineering projects. Professional Opportunities. Civil engineers have a great deal of flexibility in selecting their areas of specialization, their geographic locations, and the types of organizations for which they work. Consulting firms, industries, municipalities, and state and federal agencies all need civil engineers. Expanding environmental, energy, transportation, and infrastructure concerns have increased demand for civil engineers in government and private consulting and construction firms. Because civil engineering projects are often long term, jobs tend to be stable and not influenced by economic fluctuations.

    General Information
    THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
The School of Engineering traces its roots to 1925, when the Technical Club of Dallas, a professional organization of practicing engineers, petitioned SMU to fulfill the need for an engineering school in the Southwest. In response to the club's request, the School of Engineering began one of the first cooperative education programs in the United States, a program that continues to put engineering students to work on real technical projects today. Included in the School of Engineering curricula are programs in electrical engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, computer engineering, computer science, management science, mechanical engineering, and telecommunications systems. And 1990 was the kickoff year for the Complete Engineer a renewed emphasis on a well-rounded humanities and social sciences education combined with technical specialization. This emphasis continues today. The School of Engineering is a founder and charter member of the Association for Media-based Continuing Education for Engineers (AMCEE), a nationwide consortium of engineering schools that offer videotaped continuing education courses. In addition, the school is a founding member of the National Technological University (NTU), which offers engineering education to students across the country via direct broadcast satellite relay.

    College of Engineering and Architecture

Many new college students are undecided on the particular branch of engineering in which they wish to enroll and want to explore different areas. The purpose of the general engineering program is to give new students the opportunity to become better acquainted with the engineering profession and its various disciplines and to prepare them academically for entry into a specific engineering curriculum.
    The Program
After meeting the general engineering academic requirements or after deciding on a major, students may transfer to whatever discipline in engineering they choose. The transfer must be made within the first year of residence at North Dakota State University. In order to transfer to a specific major, a minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required except for the following majors which require 2.3: electrical engineering, industrial engineering and management, manufacturing engineering, and mechanical engineering. The engineering programs available at NDSU are listed below.
