Women Experiencing Infertility: Health Practices Survey
Done in conjunction with the Mind/Body Center for Women's Health, Mind/Body Medical Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Harvard Medical School.
With each age comes change in hormonal balance and menstrual flow, in the reproductive organs and in other body and mind systems. And each change, whether an immediate problem or not, requires a response. It’s not as though we can simply "let it pass." In fact, we now are beginning to realize that the more responsibility we take for our "gynecologic health," the more we are aware and knowledgeable of each of the phases of our reproductive life, the better our whole life will be.

Why do I need to know about endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a common disease that can affect any menstruating woman from the time of her first period to menopause . Sometimes, the disease can last after menopause. There is no cure for endometriosis and it can be hard for a health care provider to figure out if a woman has it. It can also be hard to figure out the best way to treat it if a woman has the disease. Endometriosis can affect a woman in many ways, such as her ability to work and have children, and her relationships with her partner, children, friends, and co-workers. Researchers are working to find out both causes and ways to manage this disease, so that women who have it can lead full lives.

Hysterectomy Awareness
HYSTERECTOMY is NOT the same thing as MENOPAUSE ! Although far too often, it is treated similarly. Hysterectomy,
with Oophorectomy,(removal of the ovaries), very much needs its own
separate treatment and HRT regimen. If you have had hysterectomy with removal of ovaries, which is referred to
by the medical community as, *surgical menopause*, this *state* is very
different from *natural occurring menopause*. The information that is applied to natural occurring menopause,
cannot be applied the same to what the medical community terms
*surgical menopause*, the more accurate, definition is *female castration*.
This term is upsetting to women but is much more accurate in describing
the removal of the ovaries than menopause or surgical menopause. Ovarian
removal resembles menopause as much as removal
of a man's testes resembles male menopause. Millions of women all across our continent, suffer daily from many health problems after hysterectomy and ovarian removal. Some of these problems are related to the surgery itself, many problems relate to ovarian removal or

The specific causes of endometriosis remain unknown, but research suggests that hormonal or immune system problems may play a part in the development of the condition. Herbal remedies, some used for ages to help with a number of female-related conditions, are one way to help ease the pain of endometriosis. One such herbal remedy is Gaia’s Vitex Elixir for Women. This compounded elixir helps correct estrogen metabolism imbalances associated with excessive catechol estrogens and elevated inflammatory prostaglandins. Vitex Elixir helps treat the pains and symptoms related to endometriosis, as well as other conditions such as: PMS, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, or menopausal imbalances.

http://www.womenssurgerygroup.com/conditions/Endometriosis/overview.asp
Endometriosis is an enigmatic disease affecting about 7% of reproductive-aged women -approximately 5 million Americans. Although they may suffer significant symptoms ranging from pelvic pain to infertility, most of these women do not know that they have endometriosis,. Physicians' understanding of (1) the clinical presentation of endometriosis, (2) its proper diagnosis and staging, and (3) the management of its sequele have improved dramatically over the past few years. The result has been better, more cost-effective patient care. Definition
Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial tissue (normally found only on the inside of the uterus) in locations outside the uterus. This tissue reacts to estrogen and progesterone. The usual location is in the pelvis (on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, or bladder), but endometriosis has also been found in sites outside the pelvis (including omentum, small intestine, appendix, anterior abdominal wall, surgical scars, diaphragm, lung, urinary tract, and musculoskeletal and neural systems). This endometrial tissue reacts to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, just as endometrial tissue lining the inside of the uterus reacts during the normal ovulatory cycle. Prevalence and Incidence
The prevalence and incidence of endometriosis depends on the population of women being studied, ranging from 1 to 50%. It has been reported to occur in 10 - 15% of women undergoing diagnostic laparoscopy, 2 - 5% of women undergoing tubal sterilization, 30 -40% of infertile women having laparoscopy, and 14 - 53% of women with pelvic pain.

Endometriosis Normal Uterus Side View (Facing Right)
Side View (Facing Left)
The normal tissue lining the uterine cavity is called the endometrium. Endometriosis is the presence of this endometrial tissue outside the uterus. The most common places for implantation are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and intestines, uterine wall, lining of the pelvis and in very rare cases it may be found in the lungs, surgical wounds (cesarean section scars), brain tissue and the vaginal wall.
The explanation on how this tissue gets there is of some debate. It is thought that during menstruation, blood regurgitates out of the fallopian tubes and into the abdominal cavity. This process is known as retrograde bleeding.
How common is it?
The true incidence of endometriosis is not really known, but it is thought that 10-15% of all women in their reproductive age will develop endometriosis and 25-35% of women who are infertile have endometriosis. The risk of this disease is seven times greater if a mother or sister have had the disease. What are the symptoms?
