      After three heart attack deaths, a number of states have suspended or postponed their vaccination programs. The CDC is recommending that people with heart disease not get vaccinated against smallpox as the investigation into a possible link between the vaccine and heart problems continues.       Scientists are working to develop diagnostic tests and treatments as the number of reported cases continues to increase. The United States has reported 69 suspected cases, but no deaths.

    The Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA) is the national organization representative of the 5,000 physician assistants (PA) currently practicing emergency medicine. It is estimated that 10% of all physician assistants in the United States practice emergency medicine. Our mission is to enhance the emergency medicine physician assistants' ability to provide the best quality patient care. We work very closely with both the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) on issues regarding scope of practice, reimbursement, legislation, advocacy, and proper utilization of PAs in the emergency department.     Catalog of Emergency Medicine Residencies
    Welcome to the SAEM Residency Catalog. The Catalog was developed to provide detailed information on each of the 127 residency programs approved by the Residency Review Committee of Emergency Medicine. The number of approved residency programs have increased dramatically. In 1970 there was one program. In 1975 there was 18. In 1980 there was 43. In 1985 there was 63. In 1990 there was 81. In 1995 there was 108 and in 2000 there was 122. The 127 emergency medicine residency programs are structured in three different formats: 1-4 programs: There are 16 of these four year programs.
