As educators you are in a wonderful position to influence children's learning about conservation and environmental issues. Forest and Bird hopes that the following ideas will help you to 'green' your classrooms and schools. Waste Trees Electricity Transport
Waste... 1. Reduce
Encourage everyone to use the back side of paper before it is discarded (preferably recycled). 2. Implement a recycling programme at your school
Recycling can become a bit of an organisational nightmare, so try to spread the responsibility to reduce the individual workload. If your town/city has a kerbside recycling programme take advantage of it by providing your students with recycling bins. You may need to nominate some students to take responsibility for making sure that only recyclable items are put into the recycling bin and that the bin is put out at the kerbside on the appropriate day. You may find it easier to put the responsibility of recycling onto individual classrooms. Having a recycling bin in each room, which is the responsibility of the students. The recyclable items will need to be put out at the kerbside on the appropriate day or taken home by students to be put with their recyclable material at home - a roster system may be needed.

http://www.nc.uk.net/ld/Sc_oppk2.html
Opportunities and activities at key stage 2
Much of the science programme of study at key stage 2 is relevant to pupils with learning difficulties. With modification, it can provide stimulating and challenging learning opportunities.
The focus of teaching science at key stage 2 may be on giving pupils opportunities to:
recognise that they are growing and changing, and to learn about how the body changes in preparation for puberty control aspects of their immediate surroundings, for example, using forces and electrical circuits or changing materials for a purpose.
Given these opportunities in science at key stage 2:
all pupils with learning difficulties (including those with the most profound disabilities) continue to develop their experience and understanding of the world by using their senses, observing and exploring. With appropriate support, they take part in investigations about living things, materials and phenomena. They gain greater awareness of life processes and of themselves as growing and changing individuals. most pupils with learning difficulties (including those with severe difficulties in learning) who will develop further skills, knowledge and understanding in most aspects of the subject

The fraction of class time devoted to science is less than it should be — even in the minds of many teachers themselves. The problem is that the teachers don't like science, don't feel confident in their science knowledge, and/or don't know how to teach science effectively. Exemplary elementary school science teachers have at least four important attributes. They like science, have an accurate understanding of major science content and processes, feel confident in their ability to learn science, and teach science using an age appropriate inquiry based approach. This course, like the science education department, exists to help you become an exemplary science teacher. I have centered the class around three major goals. The goals are to help you: 1. like science

Teach Electrical Safety

T he PUD has two electrical safety demonstration boards that we use throughout our service area for education purposes. The display units open up to about 4' x 10', and contain electrified scale-model neighborhoods. These units are designed to teach electrical safety to schoolchildren. Every year, we take the units around to all the fifth grade classes in our district. The demonstrations, which take about half an hour, are conducted by our employees, including linemen, servicemen, and other qualified personnel. The program has been running for about twelve years now, and is very popular with both students and teachers. The demonstration unit shows what can happen when various routine items come in contact with electricity, in a variety of daily activities.

Reprinted from the June 1988 Texas Teller The ancient, skilled art of storytelling is a favorite pastime with many Ghanaian families. It's a system by which their long history is passed down orally. But today technology is moving like a fast eraser across their cultural blackboard. TEFLE, GHANA: The village of Tefle is about 100 kilometers, or 60 miles, from Ghana's capital, Accra. As in hundreds of other villages, here can be found the old Africa. Unpaved streets and mud-and-clay huts bake silently in the Saharan sun. Easy going inhabitants engage in daily activities that have remained unchanged for generations. Strong-boned women dressed in gaily patterned cloth sell vegetables at roadside kiosks: red piles of tomatoes and chili peppers, yams, garden eggs and groundnuts (peanuts) wrapped in newsprint. Old women and young girls pound fufu (cassava and plantain) in courtyards and stir chili-flavored stews. Chickens roam at will and babies crawl o the hard-baked earth. men work, idle or hunt small game. Traditional ways of life are preserved in places such as Tefle, but someday this typical village scene may be extinct.

Ease of Use System Requirements PC Mac Price Survey Product Support Virtual Labs: Electricity teaches kids about electricity by presenting them with simulations of how pieces of electrical equipment work together. The lessons begin with basic circuits but become more relevant to complicated systems found in real-life as the program progresses in difficulty. Eventually the software program allows students to develop models of circuits found in doorbells, holiday lights, and cars. Virtual Labs: Electricity uses several strategies to teach kids. If students are independent and familiar with electric circuits, they can put together their own simulations of circuits by clicking and dragging labeled icons that specify types of equipment wires, ammeters, resistors, batteries and more. Less experienced students can work through an exhaustive list of experiments that Edmark has placed in the school-version of the program. These lessons include thinking questions and challenges. The program also includes a "Sci-Clopedia" that teaches students about the physics of electricity and articles on electricity from the World Book Encyclopedia. Educational Value Virtual Labs: Electricity helps students discover the basic properties of a circuit, the purpose of devices such as switches, fuses, and capacitors, and methods for controlling and channeling current in a circuit. Kids using the program also learn concepts such as voltage, resistance and power. Students think about Ohm's and Kirchoff's Laws while learning about electrical safety and logic. Kids can discover all this using
