Egypt One of the major destinations in Africa. In my opinion this country doesn't represent the "real" Africa: wide plains with wildlife, traditional villages etc. are rather found in countries further south. If you don't care about thousands of tourists around you and if you are more interested in historical sights than adventures beyond civilization, Egypt can definitely offer you very much. I've only visited Cairo and Alexandria (with my girlfriend in April 1997), so I will concentrate on these two cities. Alexandria Situated at the Mediterranean Sea, it has a very long and nice promenade (see picture) along the coast. At the beginning of April it was too cold to go swimming, but also in Summer time I would avoid untouristy beaches, because especially European females might get in trouble with conservative locals. The center of Alexandria is quite pleasant and it's easy to get oriented. The only major sight that I can remember was the Citadel of Qaitbay, an old fortress at the shore. Citadel of Qaitbay coastal promenade in Alexandria Caroline and me in the center of Alexandria tram Cairo A very large city with well over 10 million inhabitants, quite modern and safe enough for the average visitor. As the pyramids of Gizeh are situated at the outskirts of Cairo, you definitely should not miss to visit Cairo, when in Egypt. When you travel individually (like I did in Egypt with a friend), be careful! Comparing all the countries, I have been to so far, I experienced the nastiest tourist business in Egypt. For many Egyptians, a European tourist is often not more than a walking purse with a lot of money. In contrast to other countries, where people try to sell you things all the time and tell you higher prices (which is normal in many countries), I had contact to many locals in Cairo, who treated me in a very bad and annoying way, lacking any respect.
