Egypt Government Sentences Coptic Christian In "Sham" Trial CAIRO (CWNews.com/Fides) - On Monday, Coptic Christian William Shaiboub was sentenced to 15 years at hard labor for the murder of two men in al-Kosheh village in August 1998 after a trial critics said was a sham. The sentence was passed down three days after the civil authorities opened official celebrations to mark the 2,000th anniversary of Christ's "Flight into Egypt" in the presence of the country's Christian and Muslim leaders. Shaiboub was first taken into custody in September 1998. His arrest followed the detaining of over 1,000 local Coptic Christians, many of whom claim they were tortured by local police. According to reports, Shaiboub himself was hung upside down by his feet, beaten, tied to a chair and given electric shocks to sensitive parts of his body. The human rights group Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) said the sole prosecution witnesses against Shaiboub, Abdu Mikhail Malak and Yasser Shahid Allam, both army conscripts, later retracted their statements saying that they had only accused him under duress. Malak reportedly refused to give false testimony against Shaiboub despite being tortured, but when police threatened to rape his mother he finally succumbed to their pressure.

Ancient Egypt: Politics and Government In ancient Egypt, the rulers mainly consisted of the pharaohs, who were the most important and powerful people in Egyptian Society. Government THE PHARAOHS King Tutankhamen? Cleopatra? As you probably already know, these two people were called PHARAOHS, who were the most important and powerful people in Egyptian society. The Pharaohs were the rulers of ancient Egypt.   The actual word pharaoh comes from the Egyptian word "per-ao" meaning "great house".  Sometime between 1554 BCE and 1304 BCE, the Egyptians chose to address their king as pharaoh to show their great respect for the king (or queen, as in Cleopatra's case) by referring to him as the palace where he lived.  provided a link between the Egyptian people and their gods (see Religion section) by performing special rituals and ceremonies in the temples. The ancient Egyptians looked upon their king or pharaoh as a god, a descendant of the great sun god Re.  The Egyptians believed that the pharaohs provided a link between themselves and their gods ( for full details about the main gods, please see

Country Info Egypt Introduction Egypt General Data Egypt Maps Egypt Culture ... Egypt Time and Date Egypt Government Back to Top Egypt was a constitutional monarchy from 1923 to 1952, when military officers seized control of the government. Although Egypt became a republic in 1953, it essentially remained a military dictatorship dominated by a single political party. In 1978 a multiparty political system was instituted. Egypt is governed under a constitution that was approved by a national referendum in 1971. The constitution, which was amended in 1977 and 1980, provides for an Arab socialist state with Islam as the official religion. It also stresses social solidarity, equal opportunity, and popular control of production.

Egypt: Daily Life
Ancient Egypt was a narrow strip of land along the Nile River. Each year the river flooded its banks, leaving behind a fertile fringe of soil they called "the Black Land," while the desert all around the Nile valley was called "the Red Land." It was here the Ancient Egyptians built their homes.
Family Life
The people of ancient Egypt highly valued family life. They treasured children and regarded them as a great blessing. In the lower class families, the mother raised the children. The wealthy and nobility, had slaves and servants that helped take care of the children by attending to their daily needs. If a couple had no children, they would pray to the gods and goddesses for help. They would also place letters at the tombs of dead relatives asking them to use their influence with the gods. Magic was also used as an attempt to have children. In event that a couple still could not conceive a child, adoption was also an option. Although women were expected to obey their fathers and husbands, they were equal to men in many ways. They had the legal right to participate in business deals, own land, and were expected to represent themselves in court cases. Women even faced the same penalties as men. Sometimes wives and mothers of pharaohs were the "real" ruling power in government, though they ruled unknowingly to common people. Queen Hatshepsut was the only woman who ruled out right by declaring herself pharaoh. An Egyptian wife and mother were highly respected in this ancient society.
