Culture back in court
The Culture Ministry is appealing a court decision to remove from Egypt's list of protected monuments the tomb of a man revered by Jews as holy. Nevine El-Aref reports Jewish pilgrims will no longer be able to perform the annual rituals celebrating the birthday of Abu Hassira, a Moroccan Jew venerated by co- religionists as a holy man, at the village of Demitioh in the Nile Delta province of Beheira. However, they will continue to have access to his tomb. On 5 September, an Administrative Court in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria prohibited the annual Jewish festival held at the shrine, which is situated atop a 10-metre hill and adjacent to a Byzantine necropolis. The ruling was the result of legal action taken by a lawyer against the Culture Ministry, the governmental body responsible for the shrine, and an indication of how politics and religion have become so intertwined in the Middle East. The judge explained that the principle rationale behind his decision is that the rituals practiced by Jewish pilgrims at the site were not in keeping with public morals. The

The Nubia Museum of Aswan , designed to house the fantastic collection items unearthed from the archaeological excavations during the Nubia Campaign, was officially opened on 23 November 1997. It is intended to provide an overall picture of the civilization which had flourished in the area and will thus contribute to a better understanding of humanity and its environment from prehistory to the present day.

The Egyptian Culture Reflected in Worship
Deborah Howard Much of our knowledge about ancient Egyptian culture is based on elaborate worship rituals related to death and the afterlife. Egyptians were devoted to their gods and to their pharaohs who were gods on earth, as demonstrated by their willingness to build the pyramids for the safe passage of their leaders into the afterlife.
Understanding the development of Egyptian society and their theological system requires a basic knowledge of the geography of the area. The Nile River Valley and Nile Delta, circa 4000-5000 BCE, was comprised of about 12,000 square miles of arable land. The villages and towns of ancient Egypt were found up and down the length of the Nile with most of the population living below the First Cataract (located approximately at present day Aswan).
The Egyptians were accomplished farmers. They knew the Nile would flood each year and bring new life and abundant grain. The Nile's flooding was predictable and left rich new deposits of silt for new crops, making irrigation easy to plan. A basin irrigation system allowed the flood waters to flow gently into each field, cleansing and renewing the earth each year.
The virtual isolation of the Nile Valley allowed Egyptian civilization to develop unthreatened by its neighbors. The Mediterranean Sea lay to the north, vast deserts were found to the east and west, and dense jungle lay to the south. An invader would have to be quite determined to brave the elements that protected the Nile Valley civilization.

Egypt's culture minister withdraws 'blasphemous' book Faruq Hosni ordered the removal from store shelves of a novel deemed offensive to Islam. April 30, 2000, 12:17 PM
CAIRO (AFP) - Egyptian Culture Minister Faruq Hosni ordered the removal from store shelves of a novel deemed offensive to Islam and opened an inquiry into who had authorized its publication, a ministry official said Sunday. Hosni had been singled out for criticism by the Islamist newspaper Al-Shaab and by a teacher at the Islamic Al-Azhar University because the culture ministry re-released "Feast of the Sea Algae" by Syrian writer Haidar Haidar in Egypt two months ago. The minister ordered the book's immediate removal from shops and set up a committee to find out who was responsible for publishing it, the official from his office said. Disciplinary measures against several people have already been decided on, he added. The bi-weekly Al-Shaab said parts of the novel insult the Muslim holy book, the Quran, and call the Prophet Mohammed a "skirt-chaser."

HOME Temples and Tombs Pyramids of Giza Thebes Valley of the Kings A journey along the Nile The waters of the mighty Nile allowed the otherwise dry land of Egypt to become a cradle for one of the world's greatest ancient civilizations. From the start of the Old Kingdom around 2686 BC, a great era of rule by pharaohs of more than 30 family dynasties continued almost unbroken for nearly 3000 years. After the glorious New Kingdom, the age of the Egyptian pharaohs ended with decline and rule by the Ptolemies. Today, we can travel along the Nile and explore a succession of old temples and tombs that are testimonies to the remarkable achievements of the people of ancient Egypt. The Old Kingdom: AGE OF THE PYRAMIDS The ancient Egyptian civilization of the Nile Valley came of age under Old Kingdom rulers of dynasties 3 to 6. Their greatest legacies are the huge Giza Pyramids, the results of a spectacular program of pyramid building. The Pyramids of Giza epitomize ancient Egypt, but they were the results of a short period of pyramid building during the Old Kingdom.

The Amarna Letters
(Late Bronze Age, 14th century BCE)
after the Amarna Revolution
To the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life... your slave and dust under your feet. At the feet of the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, I bowed down seven times seven times. I heard the words of the tablets of the King my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, and the heat of your slave and the dust under the feet of the King, my lord, my sun, my god, the breath of my life, is exceeding glad that the breath of the King my lord, my sun, my god has gone out to his slave and to the dust under his feet. Who is your servant but a dog? and they prostrate themselves before the Pharaoh Seven times and seven times on both back and belly.
The el-Amarna Tablets
In 1887 about 350 clay tablets were found at el Amarna, the site of Akhenaten's capital Akhetaten. Most of these are now in European Museums (200 in Berlin, 80 in the British Museum and twenty at Oxford). They are written in cuneiform characters in the diplomatic language of the day, Akkadian. Most of the letters are dated to the reigns of Amenhotep III (1402-1364) and Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV, 1350-1334).

Catalog: Book Manufacturer: Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. Authors: Susan L. Wilson Release Date: April, 2002 Availability: Usually ships within 2 to 3 days List Price: Our Price: Used Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: Essential for any woman traveling to Egypt As an American woman who had already been to Egypt and experienced many different things with regard to cultural differences, I decided to purchase this book before returning again . It was a relief to get some insight on certain situations to avoid (as a woman) and how to enjoy this wonderful country while maintaining a deep respect for it's people's beliefs and customs. A Good Read There are two types of travel books: Those we skim through and those we read. As a book to skim, it's ok. It does not have much to reference quickly, if at all. However, as a book to read and to contemplate, it is very good. If you buy this book, take the time to read it carefully from cover to cover. Unlike a lot of commentaries on foreign culture, which tend to be trite, this author is very respectful of Egyptian culture without being ingratiating.
