What is technical editing/writing?
Follow Ups Post Followup Freelance Online's Open Forum FAQ Posted by Jennifer Gross on June 09, 1998 at 14:16:10: Here's a question I've been thinking about for some time: what qualifies as technical editing (or writing)? Does medical editing count, or is that considered a different animal entirely? For example, last year I did some work for a government contractor on their proposals. One of the editors who hired me had the title of "technical editor" and indicated that the material I would be editing/proofreading was technical. When I brought samples of the type of medical editing I had done (including studies in the areas of cell biology, genetics, and such), the editorial director said that it looked much more technical than their material. Despite the company's definition of the proposals as technical, the material I worked on didn't seem to coincide with what I thought was technical. The proposals were primarily for maintenance contracts. No computer documentation, hard science, or engineering, which is what I think of as technical. My underlying question, of course, is whether I actually have the background for some "technical" editing and don't know it because my definition is too narrow. Do all of you technical editors and writers have specific knowledge/education concerning computers, particular sciences, or math, or have you picked up what subject-matter knowledge you need "on the job"? I recently edited some computer documentation, but I'm not sure I could land a client on the strength of one 75-page computer networking proposal. If medical editing and the proposals for the company mentioned above were considered part of the "technical" mix, my background would be fairly strong.

It also falls into other areas. As discussed just a short time ago on FOLF, technical writing is a much broader area than just hard-core manufacturing/computer topics.
