The population is ethnically mixed: 55% mestizo (mixed indigenous - Caucasian), 25% Indigenous, 10% Caucasian, 9% African, and 1% other. Ecuador's many different peoples coexist peacefully. Photo by Casa Matico. Although the population was heavily concentrated in the Andes highlands region a few decades ago, today it is divided about equally between that area and the coast. Migration toward cities - particularly Quito and Quayaquil - in all regions has increased the urban population to more than 50%. The rainforest region to the east of the mountains remains the most sparsely populated of Ecuador's three continental regions and contains only about 3% of the population. Culture Amazonian frontier towns, Pacific coast fishing villages, rambling old haciendas, packed markets, and colonial cities provide the stage on which Ecuador's cultures intermingle; each striving to maintain its own identity and history while also charting a meaningful path into the future. Even outside these cultural crossroads, in a day, because of Ecuador's compactness, one can experience any number of Ecuador's distinct cultures.

This trip is truly an expedition of nature and culture to be cherishedforever. Highlights • Trip originates and ends Quito, Ecuador.
http://216.109.154.243/adventures/ecuador/ecuador.htm
Imagine yourself surrounded by four towering volcanoes, witnessing the first light of day as it illuminates the glacier-covered crown of Mount Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. As the sun warms the morning, you are awed by the Andean condor as it soars over the mists of Sebretana waterfall. The cloud-draped mountain peaks form the most pristine cloud forest accessible to man and frame the sharp contrast of the Andes highlands and dense forests. As graceful rivers flow to form the beginning of the Amazon basin, search for signs of the rarest of all Andean mammals - the spectacled black bear. With patience and a bit of luck, we will observe this magnificent species as we spend time in the largest private ecological reserve in Ecuador. Traveling by horse and on foot, this “Galapagos of the Andes” is simply peace in nature.
A cultural experience awaits us at the handicraft market in Otavalo, the largest in the world! As you wander through their villages, the friendly Ecuadorian people greet you with their contagious smiles. Watch artists weave beautiful tapestries in the village of Peguche, and turn wood into works of wonder in the village of San Antonio. This trip is truly an expedition of nature and culture to be cherished forever.
Highlights:
• Trip originates and ends Quito, Ecuador. Explore the beautiful colonial “old town” of Quito before departing for Otavalo, the site of the world’s largest handicraft market. Visit the villages of Peguche, Cotacachi and San Antonio and watch the craftsmen develop works of art in the same manner as they did generations before.

The extraordinary ecological diversity of Ecuador is known throughout the world. Students participating on this program will experience a wide range of cultures, urban and rural communities, and an extensive variety of natural environments. You can travel from the wonderful sunny beaches on the Pacific Ocean to the cold snow capped Andean mountain peaks, to the exuberance of the tropical rain forest of the Amazon region in less than seven hours. Curriculum
FScN4210: This course will focus on the relationship of culture and health in Ecuador. Students will receive an overview of Ecuadorian history and geography, and their influence on health. Students will also study how politics of today and globalization impact the daily life of Ecuadorians. Daily life and health practices in large urban cities will be compared with daily life and health practices in rural villages. The use of botanicals, politics of botanicals, and uses of specific botanicals will also be addressed. There are no prerequisites for this course, though it will be helpful if participants have basic high school biology and an interest in Ecuadorian culture. Knowledge of Spanish is not required. Program Structure
Upon arrival, students will participate in a welcome reception and orientation. The class will be highly interactive-in most class periods, approximately half the time will be spent in lecture and half in discussion, individual thinking and writing, or working in groups. Class, guest lectures, and field trips will take place Mondays through Fridays. Weekends and some time each day will be free for studying and exploring Quito and surrounding communities. Students will receive five hours of Spanish instruction in small groups. Before departure, there will be a farewell dinner.
