The purpose of the qualification is to prepare students at an advanced level for a management or research career in the fields of economics and business applied to the agricultural, agribusiness and natural resources sector. This course targets specifically those that have to operate at policy level in institutions.
It creates an opportunity for specialisation over and above the skills acquired in the BSc Agric. degree. In comparison to the BSc level which is more a generalised approach, the MSc courses emphasises specialisation in the core areas offered by this department, viz. resource economics, agribusiness, agricultural and rural finance and agricultural policy analysis.

An introduction to agricultural systems and the interactions between microbial plant, animal, and human components. The emphasis is on issues and problems associated with animal production, value-added processing, marketing and the consumption of food. AGRIC 201.3
Agricultural Systems
Prerequisite(s): AGRIC 111 and 112; or written permission of the Dean.
The nature of agricultural systems in Western Canada and throughout the world is explored through an examination of the physical, economic and social components of agricultural systems and their interactions. Emphasis is placed on understanding the functioning of agricultural systems, including why different agricultural systems have evolved and will continue to evolve in the face of change. The purpose of this option is to train environmental graduates specialised for careers in environmental economics and policy. On completion of the training, candidates should be conversant and be able to partake in, or render advice concerning, all aspects involved in the economic implications of environmental resource use. This includes economic analytical approaches, economic inefficiency, misallocation, market failure, policy failure, the economics of renewable and non-renewable resources, cost-benefit analysis, valuation of environmental goods and services, environmental accounting, temporal allocation and dynamic optimisation of resource use. The purpose of graduate training in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management is to develop competence in solving real world problems relating to food production and marketing and the quality of rural life. The discipline of agricultural economics is problem oriented with the focus being on the application or adaptation of economic theory to resource utilization. Admission Requirements For admission to the graduate program in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, the applicant must possess the equivalent of the B.S.A. degree with a major in Agricultural Economics or an Honors degree in Economics from The University of Manitoba, or any other degree which provides an equally strong basis for a graduate program in the Department. If the applicant has deficiencies of more than 12 credit hours, a requirement may be to successfully complete a pre-Master's program before being admitted to a regular graduate program. Acceptance of students intending to pursue graduate studies is based upon a careful appraisal of their academic records and the recommendations of references. All students graduating from a university outside of North America must take a Graduate Record Examination. All students whose primary language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency in English, such as a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550.
