Economic Theory in Retrospect
5th Edition
Mark Blaug
Hardback In stock This is a history of economic thought from Adam Smith to John Maynard Keynes - but it is a history with a difference. Firstly, it is a history of economic theory, not of economic doctrines, that is, it is consistently focused on theoretical analysis, undiluted by entertaining historical digressions or biological colouring. Secondly, it includes detailed Reader’s Guides to nine of the major texts of economics, namely the works of Smith, Ricardo, Mill, Marx, Marshall, Wickstead, Wicksell, Walras and Keynes, in the effort to encourage students to become acquainted at first hand with the writings of all the great economists. This fifth edition adds new Reader’s Guides to Walras’s Elements of Pure Economics (1871–74) and Keynes’ General Theory to the previous seven Reader’s Guides of other great books in economics. There are significant and major additions to six chapters.
Reviews
‘... this last edition of his magnum opus - witty, serious; iconoclastic, devout; in its core unchanged, full of new insights, is the best yet. I cannot imagine a scholar’s library - or for that matter a student’s - without it.’ Robert Heilbroner

Downs treats this differently than do other students of politics. His explanations are systematically related to, and deducible from, precisely stated assumptions about the motivations that attend the decisions of voters and parties and the environment in which they act. He is consciously concerned with the economy in explanation, that is, with attempting to account for phenomena in terms of a very limited number of facts and postulates. He is concerned also with the central features of party politics in any democratic state, not with that in the United States or any other single country. ECONOMIC THEORY
Research in EconomicTheory at CORE focuses on four main topics: General Equilibrium Analysis - The theory of incomplete markets: the role of money and monetary policy when asset markets are incomplete; general equilibrium with asymmetric information; uncertainty and insurance in general equilibrium models. - Imperfect competition in general equilibrium with agents having market power: equilibrium concepts with various feedback effects; existence of equilibria; computation of general equilibria. - Overlapping generation models: existence and stability of dynamic equilibria; macroeconomic fluctuations; theoretical foundations of unemployment and macroeconomic policies. Game Theory and Social Choice - Topics in game theory: equilibrium refinements and selection; games of incomple information; dynamic and stochastic games; cooperative games and coalition formation. - Mechanism design: incentives in collective decision making; auction theory; the design of economic and political institutions. - Social choice and welfare: foundations of utilitarianism; bargaining and sharing rules; axiomatics of allocation mechanisms; intergenerational equity.

To my relief, I passed the "control", the examination at age eleven to decide who could go on to the high school, the Douglas Ewart. In these days there were prizes every year. With much parental encouragement, I tried to win them, and as far as I remember was rather successful. But I must have had some sense that this drive to win is somewhat ignoble. When a friend beat me in chemistry I recollect being scolded at home for accepting defeat with equanimity. By the age of fourteen I had acquired a strange enthusiasm for mathematics, having managed to acquire a book called Teach Yourself Calculus, and done so. When he found out, the head mathematics teacher somehow gave me individual tuition during classes, and I raced ahead. At the same time the music teacher, who was also my piano teacher, provided books like Hogben's Mathematics for the Million.

demand rules out profit maximisation or admits infinite prices or
I have been ignoring this point, but let's see how this works mathematically.
(1) if the elasticity of demand equals a positive constant e, marginal
revenue MR = p[1 - (1/e)]
Quandt, MICROECONOMIC THEORY, 2nd edition.
(2) assume MC = AVC = independent of output.
(3) then profit max, MR = MC gives: p[1 - (1/e)] = MC
(4) which implies that p = (1/[1 - (1/e)])*MC or p = (e/(e - 1))*MC
Again, this is a very standard result. It clearly shows that a constant-elasticity demand curve does not "rule out" profit maximization. It does "admit" infinite quantities: if MC = 0, p = 0, so that with a demand curve which is a rectangular hyperbola, q is infinite. Similarly, an

James Devine's commentary on Legge was based from the start on a false
assumption, but I doubt if life is long enough to read his reworking
of it, even if he cares to.
I do not give a toss if some economists find it convenient to assume
that elasticity is constant over some range of p and q. This is far
from the only hypothesis contrary to fact to be found in the economics
literature.
The fact is that a firm CANNOT, cet par, preserve its margins by
raising its prices when its variable costs rise if its original pricing was optimal unless there is a simultaneous increase in PER PRODUCT demand. A further fact is that C- and K-sector workers are NOT paid market clearing wages and so the level of unemployment cannot affect their wages DIRECTLY. Theories that assume that they are paid such wages
