Woman dies from Ebola in South Africa

November 25, 1996
Web posted at: 4:30 p.m. EST (2130 GMT) JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) The first person to contract the deadly Ebola virus in South Africa has died and another two cases have been identified. Health officials at the Morningside Clinic in Johannesburg said nurse Marilyn Lahana, 46, died from the virus Sunday evening. Lahana apparently caught the illness from a Gabonese doctor she was treating but who was not known to be carrying the virus. The doctor, who became ill while in Gabon, has since recovered. Health officials say they have identified two other people in South Africa with the virus. These are the first known cases of Ebola in South Africa and the first cases in the world occurring within a major metropolitan population. The highly contagious disease, with its devastating, organ-disintegrating effects, gained international notoriety in 1995, killing 245 people in Zaire. Ebola outbreaks in February and October killed at least 30 people in Gabon. Some 350 health care workers who had contact with either Lahana or the Gabonese doctor are being closely monitored. It was not immediately clear if the two new cases were among those being monitored.

Ebola is highly contagious and deadly
By Pascale Harter
BBC, Brazzaville In the north of Congo-Brazzaville, 16 people have died in a suspected outbreak of the Ebola virus. The Congolese authorities say they are extremely concerned that the virus might spread. There is no cure for Ebola and little is known about the virus, which causes its victims to die from internal haemorrhaging. The Congolese Ministry of Health says 16 people are known to have died so far, but communications with the villages of Kele and Mbou, 800 kilometres north of Brazzaville in the Region of Cuvette West, are difficult. Doctor Joseph Mboussa, Director in the Ministry of Health, says a villager has been dying every few days since the outbreak began on 4 January, and already the death toll could be much higher than 16. Gorillas wiped out The authorities were first alerted to a possible outbreak when a clan of gorillas in the Cuvette West Region began to die.

Ebola has killed hundreds of people in central Africa
There are fears that birds could spread the deadly Ebola virus. The shell of the human pathogen is similar to viruses that attack birds, suggesting it could have jumped from birds to humans. It is possible that there is a bird host, possibly a migratory bird, and that is consistent with the epidemiology of the disease
David Sanders
If this is the case, Ebola could be being carried long distances on the wing, with obvious health implications. The theory has not been proven, but researchers say it should be borne in mind by health agencies. The warning comes from US researchers who have studied the biochemical structure of Ebola. Quarantined children during the 1995 outbreak David Sanders of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, said biochemical analysis revealed the protein shell of Ebola was close to that of certain bird retroviruses.

Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
  • Ebola hemorrhagic fever is caused by several Ebola viruses. The source of these viruses in nature is not known. People can get Ebola hemorrhagic fever by direct contact with virus-infected blood, body fluids, organs, or semen. There is no known cure or treatment. Recent outbreaks in humans have occurred in areas where medical supplies and care were inadequate. The outbreaks were controlled by using barrier nursing techniques. Under normal circumstances, travelers are at low risk of getting the disease. To eliminate the risk, travelers should avoid areas where Ebola outbreaks are occurring.
What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever Ebola hemorrhagic fever is one of the deadliest of a group of diseases called viral hemorrhagic fevers. They range in seriousness from relatively mild illnesses to severe and potentially fatal diseases. All forms of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle aches. Depending on the virus, the disease can get worse until the patient becomes very ill with breathing problems, severe bleeding (hemorrhage), kidney problems, and shock. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses from four families: filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviviruses, and bunyaviruses. The usual hosts for most of these viruses are rodents or arthropods (such as ticks and mosquitoes). In some cases, the natural host for the virus is not known.

Since the release of such popular books and movies like Outbreak and The Hot Zone "ebola" has come to mean much more than just a disease, it is now a business, a career, and an attitude. I would even go so far as to say that ebola is a psychological condition.
Ebola: 1. (v.) Acting in a manner that is out of control, crazy, insane, Ebola . Ex: Chuck came in and went completely Ebola , he threw a desk and strangled that poor kid.
2. (adj.) Word used to describe someone or something that frequently acts in an ebola manner. Ex: how would I describe Chuck? Well, he's nice, but kind of Ebola if you know what I mean.
As you can see, the connotations of the word Ebola are many and growing fast. These connotations are derived from the erratic behavior of monkeys in the movie Outbreak , and the extremely violent nature of the virus itself. Someone acting in an Ebola manner can be described as being in a

Woman in Canada may have Ebola
February 6, 2001 Web posted at: 3:54 p.m. EST (2054 GMT) HAMILTON, Ontario (CNN) Health officials are working to determine if a woman who traveled from Africa and now is hospitalized in Canada is suffering from Ebola hemorrhagic fever in what would be the first known case in North America. Health Canada, the nation's health department, confirmed a laboratory in Winnipeg had received blood samples from the woman. The hospital where the woman is being is treated is testing for viral hemorrhagic fevers, including Ebola, a severe, often-fatal disease, according to a hospital spokeman. INTERACTIVE Trace the history of the Ebola virus Test results are expected by Thursday, possibly sooner, said Jeff Pender of Health Canada. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are spread through human excretions such as blood, semen, saliva and mucus, and are not as contagious as airborne illnesses.

WHO confirms Ebola outbreak
The ebola virus GENEVA, Switzerland The World Health Organisation says there had been at least one case of the deadly Ebola virus in Gabon. The confirmation follows reports that 10 people had died of a mystery illness in the Central African country. A WHO official said in the Gabon capital Libreville on Friday that 10 people, including a nurse, had died in Gabon from a disease it was feared could be Ebola. The WHO told Reuters from its Geneva headquarters on Saturday at least one case of Ebola had been reported from Gabon. At least 66 people died from Ebola in the same area of Gabon in 1996. Another WHO official said on Friday 28 people had died of haemorrhagic fever in the Democratic Republic of Congo and doctors feared that outbreak might also be Ebola. There is no known cure and no vaccine for Ebola, which causes up to 90 percent of victims to bleed to death in a matter of days.
