Funding Opportunities American Legacy Foundation Funds Two Tobacco-Prevention Programs The American Legacy Foundation has announced two separate grants to support smoking prevention: the Circle of Friends: Women Unite to Be Smoke Free Small Grants Program and the Small Innovative Grants Program. A total of $1 million in Circle of Friends grants will be awarded, with the maximum grant set at $50,000 for this one-year grant. Funds will be awarded to start new projects or help existing organizations for programs to prevent tobacco use among women. The Small Innovative Grants Program is offering grants of up to $100,000 to fund new and innovative solutions to fight the damage caused by tobacco use in America. MPF Project Funding Initiative What is the Mounted Police Foundation Project Funding Program The Project Funding Program began operation in the spring of 1995. It is designed to provide funding to much needed and worthy, non-core community projects which, without such funding, might not exist. These projects are recommended by RCMP field officers, carefully reviewed within the RCMP locally and nationally, and approved by the board of the MPF. The MPF is attempting, with the RCMP’s full co-operation, to fund projects that will directly affect the ability of community participants to achieve their aspirations and volunteer objectives. The MPF through the RCMP Product Licensing Program, generates royalties which makes funds available twice a year currently at a total of $250,000 per year for worthy projects put forward by members of the RCMP in cooperation with community groups. Project History Balkan Bridge for Drug Prevention A regional initiative (Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Italy, Romania, US) , sponsored by the East/East Program of Open Society, Budapest 2000 - ongoing Summary of activities In 2000, Index Foundation of Bulgaria initiated the Balkan Bridge for Drug Prevention in partnership with three other NGOs - Emmanuel Community, Albania, Adolescent Association - Romania and the Association for Support to Children and Families at Risk "For Happy Childhood" - Macedonia, with support from the Open Society Foundation. The long-term goal of the project is to establish a Balkan Center that will generate Regional Action Plans and policies for integrated community efforts towards no-drug use behavior. On a shorter term basis the activities are aimed at establishing a regional network for exchange of information on best practices for drug prevention. CONTACT: Diane Russell STUDY CALLS FOR MORE DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR ADOLESCENTS Nevada is woefully lacking in treatment programs for adolescent substance abusers, according to a study conducted recently on behalf of the Nevada Institute for Children. In a report titled "Helping Kids Kick Drugs: Residential and Outpatient Treatment Services for Adolescents," the institute, which is based at UNLV, calls for the state to improve and increase programs designed to help adolescents from ages 15 though 19 who are struggling with alcohol and drug abuse problems. "We'll be using this report at the Legislature to help convince lawmakers that Nevada needs to make changes that will allow more of our teens to receive the treatment they desperately need," said Vince Juaristi, executive director of the institute. Some legislators already have asked for a bill to be drafted that will address the problem and are planning to use the report to help them make their case to their fellow lawmakers, he said. The report estimates that more than $2.7 million would be necessary to provide the residential treatment, outpatient treatment, comprehensive evaluations, transitional housing, startup costs, accountability costs, and family resource center pilot projects recommended in the report.
