Description
The Trinity College Accelerated Certification Program, which consists of 20 credits at the graduate level, is a collaborative initiative among Trinity's School of Education and the District of Columbia Public Schools. The aim of the program is to recruit and prepare new teachers who meet the requirements for graduate study but would not otherwise be qualified to begin full-time teaching through typical licensure and professional education programs. The program curriculum is grounded in the core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and is customized to meet local certification and performance assessment requirements for teachers. Participants in the Accelerated Certification Program are supported by a network of Trinity faculty and mentors comprised of experienced school and teaching professionals who are dedicated to assuring each student's success. All program participants complete a final Capstone Teaching Portfolio that reflects the knowledge, skills, and competencies leading to initial licensure. The assignments in course work completed throughout the program comprise components of the portfolio.

RATHER THAN TRIPS TO THE LOCAL CHILDREN'S MUSEUM, I CAN TAKE MY STUDENTS TO THE SMITHSONIAN, OR THE SUPREME COURT, OR ON A WALK TO THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT OR CONGRESS. Full of the cultural trappings of most major cities, Washington, D.C. (pop. 606,900) retains a southern charm and offers its own intellectual stimulation, social activities, and incredibly diverse population. The country ’s national treasures —ranging from the Smithsonian to the national monuments, from the Library of Congress to the White House —are on display in D.C. and available to all. In the midst of the Mall, an open grassy area where the major monuments are located, residents and visitors alike can lose themselves in contemplation for hours. Downtown one finds museums, monuments and shops, and the Kennedy Center for the Arts presents free nightly musical programs, as well as premier concerts and foreign films.

[PDF] HARRISBURG (April 4) The Elizabethtown Area School District, Lancaster County, is due $38,800 in state funds, according to an audit released by Auditor General Robert P. Casey Jr. The underpayment will likely be added to future state allocations. An audit of the Columbia Borough School District showed that the district received a $13,700 overpayment of state funds. The overpayment will likely be deducted from a future state allocation. Both audits covered the 1996-97 through 1999-2000 school years. "Our school district audits provide valuable information on state funding to the working families and officials in every school district in Pennsylvania," Casey said. "In this case, we identified reporting errors that caused the state to reimburse the Elizabethtown Area School District more than it was due and the Columbia Borough School District less than it was due. I hope that our audits will help these districts to correct their reporting errors so they get the funds they are entitled to receive." The Elizabethtown Area School District audit showed errors in reports filed with the state that are used to calculate state reimbursement of district student transportation costs, resulting in a $65,148

THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN TEACHER EDUCATION
“An Overview” The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program was approved by the Collegiate Faculty in the Spring of 1980. The first graduating class was in May 1982. In June of the same year, the program was given State Approval from the District of Columbia Public Schools to ensure that graduates of the program could qualify for certification in the District of Columbia and in the other states with whom the District has an inter-state reciprocity agreement for teacher certification. In the Spring of 1984, the program was NCATE-accredited for the first time and in 1987, 1992 and 1997, the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program was re-accredited. Since 1980, the program has grown and evolved in response to the needs of students, schools, and reforms in teacher education. We currently offer degrees and certification in Early Childhood and Elementary Education along with a certification program in five Secondary Education subject areas: English, Math, Physical Education, Science and Social Studies. Each of these programs include course work in psychology, human development, instructional development, teaching methods, curriculum, and supervised field practicum experiences including student teaching in nearby schools using a regular education curriculum for hearing students.

Teaching Certification A Career in Education
Motivation Requirements One of the extensive debates of recent years in education has been about teacher knowledge. Education degree programs during the 1950s to 1980 generally were found to be deficient in content knowledge; prospective teachers learned how to teach, not what to teach. In contrast, alternative licensing candidates usually have already acquired knowledge of a particular discipline or content area in study for their bachelor's degree. They also have broad general content knowledge from the core programs of their college or university. Researchers offered this qualification early on as a reason for supporting alternative programs. However, some undergraduate degrees may seem more appropriate to teaching than others. For example, a psychology major or a liberal arts major at the B.A. level provides a strong foundation for understanding child development or the culture of the society, both areas of study in professional teacher education. Degrees in other professional areas, such as accounting or economics, may not satisfy state requirements for licensing. Candidates with such degrees may therefore find it necessary to take additional content course work.

The University of South Florida Foreign Language Education Programs for the professional development of teachers are approved by the State Department of Education. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
How Can you Become a Certified Teacher?
Certification to teach is determined by the Florida State Department of Education. A degree is awarded by the University. Students who complete the M.A. Plan II in Foreign Language Education offered by USF will be certified to teach K-12 because the degree program is approved by the State of Florida. The Planned Program developed with the faculty advisor shortly after the student has been officially admitted, if completed, will result in the awarding of the degree and certification. Upon completion of the degree, certification as a K-12 foreign language teacher will be placed on your transcript. This indicates that you completed an approved State of Florida teacher education program qualifying you, based on your course work, to be certified at the K-12 levels in foreign language education. You will need to take the FTCE [Florida Teacher Certification Exam] and receive passing scores on the subject area exam and the professional exam section. FTCE must be passed and scores must be on file in the Internship Office prior to the conclusion of the student internship.

This is due in no small part to the certification regulations which went into effect on September 2, 1993 as well as the changes recently adopted by the Regents that go into effect in September 2004. This Bulletin describes those regulations which are currently in place. The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to summarize the information most commonly sought by members and local leaders. Please bear in mind that this Information Bulletin is for INFORMATION ONLY , and is not to be considered as an official interpretation of the rules and regulations of the Commissioner. Official answers on the interpretation of certification regulations and certification status can only be obtained from the Office of Teaching of the State Education Department (see sidebar for contact information). HIGHLIGHTS
