Diabetes and Diet
You've recently been diagnosed with diabetes and enough of what the doctor said has sunk in that you realize you need to closely evaluate your diet. Although there was probably a lot of "don't eat this" and "be sure to watch out for that," hopefully there was also some encouragement, because a diagnosis of diabetes is not a sentence to a future of tasteless, bland cuisine.
How Does Diabetes Affect Diet?
Normally, the body produces a hormone called insulin . With diabetes, the ability to make or utilize insulin is impaired. Without insulin, the body can't properly use glucose , the simple sugar the body produces from the food we eat. Insulin is the key that unlocks cells and lets the glucose enter, thus providing energy for critical cell metabolism.
The regulation of blood sugar in the non-diabetic is automatic, adjusting to whatever foods are eaten. For the diabetic, however, extra care must be taken to balance food intake (and the resultant impact on blood sugar) with insulin injections, exercise and any other glucose altering activity.

Diabetes Diet Strategies for Women with Diabetes:
Why Some Work and Why Some Don't
The "Weight Watchers" generation
The baby boomer generation is the first generation to be raised by mothers who were highly weight conscious, Chalmers believes. "Baby boomers have been called the children of the Weight Watchers generation ," says Chalmers. "As a result, we have more of a Diabetes dieter's mentality. "When I asked the group at the seminar 'How many people have ever been on a Diabetes diet?' every hand went up. 'Five diets?' Still every hand went up. About half the people in the seminar had been on 10 Diabetes diets or more. I had a woman in my office recently who had spent over $10,000 on Diabetes diets in the past seven years, and she's now the heaviest she's ever been in her life."
High sugars equal weight loss
But how do so many women come to believe that insulin is a root cause of their weight loss battle? Others who are using intensive insulin therapy may find they are gaining weight simply because they are over-treating low blood sugar reactions with too many calories, she says. Some of the women on intensive therapy noted that the results of the DCCT showed that people on intensive therapy are prone to modest weight gain. "So they ask me, "How do you expect me to lose weight when I'm on intensive insulin therapy? Doesn't insulin prompt you to cause your body to store weight as fat?' But that isn't what's happening at all. It's these other metabolic processes that are causing the weight loss, and the weight gain."

Diabetes and a Vegetarian Diet
Our information is currently being update. If you are looking for information regarding vegetarianism and diabeties, there is an article in the Winter 1999 issue of Vegetarian Dietetics, “Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Managed Effectively with a Vegetarian Diet,” which states, “Consumption of a low fat, plant-based diet, coupled with regular exercise, can possibly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A plant-based diet, rich in legumes and slowly digested grains, may improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and facilitate the successful management of type 2 diabetes.” The Vegetarian Way , by Virginia Messina, MPH, RD and Mark Messina, PhD, has an excellent section on diabetes and a vegetarian diet. It can be ordered on the VRG website For general information on diabetes, see www.diabetes.com

Why is a special diet recommended?
A nutritionally balanced diet is always essential to maintaining a healthy mother and successful pregnancy. The foods you choose become the nutrient building blocks for the growth of the fetus. For a woman with , gestational diabetes, proper diet alone often keeps blood sugar levels in the normal range and is generally the first step to follow before resorting to insulin injections. Careful attention should be paid to the total calories eaten daily, to avoid foods which increase blood sugar levels, and to emphasize the use of foods which help the body maintain a normal blood sugar. A registered dietitian is the best person to help you with meal planning to meet your individual needs. Your physician can help you find a dietitian if this service is not a part of his or her office or clinic. Your local chapter of the American Dietetic Association or the American Diabetes Association can also help you locate a registered dietitian.

Diabetes: Insulin, Oral Medication or Diabetic Diet?
"Your daughter has diabetes and will require insulin shots and a diabetic diet for the rest of her life." As the doctor finished his proclamation I went into shock. Stephanie was only four years old, and there was no history in our family of diabetes. How could my baby have diabetes? Why would she need to take shots? Wouldn't some sort of pill work just as well? Wouldn't a diabetic diet take care of the problem? Had I missed important diabetes symptoms that might have prevented its development if I had noticed them earlier? Will she outgrow this? Can she live a normal life with diabetes? An insidious disease known as Type 1 diabetes had just overtaken my daughter's life.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease characterized by the inability to make or properly use insulin , a hormone needed to convert sugar into energy needed for life. Essentially, cells within the body are locked and insulin is the key to open them so they can use sugar from the bloodstream. Without insulin, sugar remains in the bloodstream and is unusable.
Complications from uncontrolled diabetes can include blindness, kidney, heart and nerve disease, and poor circulation to limbs.

Life with Diabetes Understanding the food pyramid and nutrition labels can help you use the principles of a diabetic exchange diet for enjoyable, healthful eating. Diabetic Exchange Diets
Our bodies metabolize food into glucose so that cells can use it for energy. A person with diabetes must be aware of how specific foods affect blood sugars in order to achieve good control. Understanding the food pyramid, nutrition labels, and perhaps learning a diabetic exchange diet can help you eat well and avoid complications from diabetes.
Food Pyramid
When I was in school the terminology for healthy eating was described as "The Basic Four." Today, kids are taught about the food pyramid. Foods such as grains, pasta, breads, and rice are in the group at the foundation of the food pyramid and, with 6 to 11 servings daily, should comprise the base for a healthy diet. Moving higher up the pyramid you'll find vegetables with 3 to 5 servings and fruit with 2 to 4 servings. A healthful diet will also contain 2 to 3 servings of milk, yogurt, or cheese and also 2 to 3 servings of meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, or nuts. Keeping these serving numbers in mind for each grouping can make a healthful diet easier to plan.

Fortunately today, advances in treatment and monitoring of blood glucose levels have made diabetes far less difficult to deal with than it used to be. Still, it is a serious condition with potentially critical complications and requires lifelong monitoring and treatment. On this site we offer information for parents and other caregivers as well as teachers, coaches, and others who will interact with children and teenagers who have diabetes. We cover these aspects:

  • Type 2 diabetes in children and teenagers - this is a recent phenomenon that is not yet fully understood.

Why Is Obesity A Growing Problem in America?
Joslin Diabetes Center's New Obesity Section Head Sheds Light on Expanding Problem
[Boston, MA, August 2001] — The statistics have been reported in all the major news magazines, on the nightly news and in newspapers from coast to coast. Overall, adult men and women are about 8 pounds heavier, on average, than they were 15 years ago. According to the National Institutes of Health, over 100 million Americans — or about 60 percent of the adult population — are overweight. As many as a third are considered "obese," a term that in general is applied when a person is 20 percent or more above their ideal body weight. According to Joslin Diabetes Center's new chief of the Section on Obesity, Eleftheria (Terry) Maratos-Flier, M.D., there is much for scientists to learn about the underlying role of genetics and environment in obesity and other factors to explain why we as a nation are gaining so much weight now. "In the last five years there have been tremendous changes in how scientists view obesity. The long held view that obesity is caused simply by overeating and weak willpower has begun to change as we have learned about other factors that control weight," says Dr. Maratos-Flier. "We now understand more about the role of the brain, in particular the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that seems to regulate in part how much we eat."
