T his book has touched the hearts of many with divergent backgrounds from around the world and across social, political, religious and economic backgrounds. It is a tribute to those portrayed here, both the refugees at Kakuma Camp and the indigenous peoples of Turkana. FROM THE DUST JACKET Daniel’s photographs bring awareness to an enormous suffering, sustained in dignity by these amazing people. I pray his passion influences a new generation to demand social and political change. OLIVER STONE is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker who has garnered critical acclaim for his wide-ranging films of social commentary. He first met Dan in August 2000 at Kakuma Refugee Camp. From a personal level, I am drawn to Danny’s work as our family lived in Kenya while I was a young girl and its people hold a special place in my heart. Danny’s photographs stand alone, however, and tell an important story. His powerful images bridge us as humans. The depth of the pictures pushes us beyond the expected differences and transports us to the unexpected—-to our very humanness. ANN BANCROFT is a polar explorer, Bancroft-Arneson Expedition - Antarctica, American Women’s Expedition to Antarctica and Steger International Expedition to the North Pole—the first woman in history to cross the ice to the North and South Poles. The Ann Bancroft Foundation works to help girls and women realize their highest dreams and potential.

Shedding light on the plight of refugees, indigenous people
by Lucy Y. Her, StarTribune staff reporter As a boy, Daniel Cheng Yang would ask his father to tell him stories about life in Laos. The 8-year-old would sit across from his father and listen to what it was like to live in the jungle, running and hiding from the Laotian government after the Vietnam War. Like many Hmong, Daniel's father had fought for U.S. forces against Communists in Laos during the war. William Yang eventually made his way to a refugee camp in Thailand. "In the camp, you have no hope, you have no future," his father told him. The stories stayed with Daniel, of St. Paul, and they shaped him into an 18-year-old who's so committed to shedding light on the plight of refugees and other struggling people that he traveled to Africa several times by himself, even taking some time off school, to document their conditions. Such is the focus of his book, "Kakuma Turkana Dueling Struggles: Africa's Forgotten Peoples," which will be published in August. The book is a compilation of 75 black-and-white photos of the Turkana people of remote northwestern Kenya and of refugees who live nearby in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. In each photo, Daniel shows how the Turkanas' way of life is surviving despite the influx of more than 81,000 refugees from war-torn Sudan and Uganda. The camp, which was opened in 1992, is bringing in people whose cultures clash with the Turkana and who are competing for scarce resources, such as water and land.

Update: World Bank revision of Indigenous Peoples Policy briefing prepared by the Bank Information Centre, October 2001 For further information please see www.bicusa.org
Summary
The World Bank is in the final stages of revising its Indigenous Peoples Policy. The current policy, Operational Directive 4.20 (OD 4.20) has been in effect since 1992. The main objectives of the policy are “to insure that World-Bank financed development projects do not cause adverse impacts upon indigenous peoples, and that they provide them with culturally compatible social and economic benefits. The current revision process, which began in 1998, is not meant to change those objectives. The revision is meant to facilitate the implementation of the policy. Some observers suggest that the draft, revised policy (OP 4.10), released to the public electronically in July 2001, is considerably weaker in important areas. Indigenous organizations complain that the draft lacks strong language to protect their rights, and that the consultation is too rushed. The Bank is now beginning a last round of external stakeholder consultations on OP 4.10, and the accompanying Bank Procedure (BP 4.10). There is a pressing need to facilitate meaningful participation in that process.
Consultation Process
The external stakeholder consultations regarding OP/BP 4.10 are taking place in all of the Banks regions October 1 – December 15 (see table below).

PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS ON THE REVISION OF THE WORLD BANK POLICY ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES [OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2001] Essential Information for Indigenous Peoples’ Organisations and Activists Briefing prepared by the Forest Peoples Programme October 2001 The purpose of this briefing is to provide indigenous peoples and civil society organisations with summary information about the fundamental concerns surrounding the current revision of the World Bank’s safeguard policy on Indigenous Peoples. The end of the briefing provides details where further information can be obtained. The importance of a strong safeguard policy on Indigenous Peoples The World Bank’s policy on Indigenous Peoples is of crucial importance for indigenous peoples because it will determine how Bank staff and borrower governments deal with indigenous communities affected by their development projects and programmes. Mandatory provisions that respect indigenous peoples’ rights are very important because they provide affected indigenous peoples with a clear mechanism to raise concerns with Bank staff, implementing agencies and, if problems continue, with the Bank’s Inspection Panel. It is also important to realise that a strong and useful Indigenous Peoples Policy underpins the effectiveness and credibility of other key safeguards including the Bank’s Involuntary Resettlement, Environmental Assessment and Forests policies

The South African NGO Biowatch organized with financial support and advice of GTZ the 2nd South-South Biopiracy Summit (22./23.08.02) directly prior to the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 (WSSD) to discuss issues of access to genetic resources and related benefit-sharing (ABS), which have not been sufficiently covered in the official preparatory process of WSSD. About 150 representatives of indigenous peoples, national and international NGOs, the academe as well as industry and politics from 20 countries world-wide participated in the conference, which generated considerable media attention in South Africa.
In his opening keynote Dr. Tewolde Berhan Egziabher (Ethiopia) outlined the development of the international discussion on biopiracy in the context of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) an d highlighted critical the diverging interests of market oriented research and local communities, striving for survival. During the following presentations and discussions in the two parallel sessions on ABS and intellectual property rights (IPR) a general disappointment was expressed that the expectations generated by the CBD of bioprospecting as a tool for generating funds for nature conservation and improvement of the livelihoods of indigenous and local communities could not be fulfilled until today. As reasons predominantly missing legal frameworks at the national level, unequal negotiating power between bioprospecting companies and resource countries, lacking recognition of indigenous peoples by national governments and missing protection of traditional knowledge were pinpointed.

Once We Were Hunters examines a collection of fragile local cultures who are up against the power of modern governments; how are these groups surviving in the globalized world? What are the ways ordinary African people are taking control of their lives within the global economy, and what scope is there to harness Indigenous Knowledge Systems in mutually beneficial ways? This series will build on the success of the African Renaissance multi media series, a three-year project that sought to interpret the meaning of the phrase "African Renaissance". Ice Media and partner AMARC have identified an important new theme for an innovative feature documentary TV series in the Southern and Eastern African regions.

As a junior version of Plotkin's tale on Suriname for adults (1), this well-illustrated book won't fail to inspire 8 to 10-year olds. The beautiful illustrations will put them right into the tropical rainforest and a riverine Indian village. The story is about the boy Kamanya and his eventually becoming the successor of a shaman, who once cured him with the help of medicinal plants. It shows the hard time such tribal communities may be given by gold diggers and missionaries, who serve as the bad guys in this story. It is the good guy, Gabriela, who restores tradition and bestowes the tribe with the first write-up of its own herbal medicine. Apart from providing the unfailing happy ending, the why's and how's of ethnobotany are thus disclosed in an age-adjusted manner. The fine drawings of 38 medical plants used by Tirio indians can serve as classroom material. (AVS) 1: Mark J. Plotkin, Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice, 1993, Penguin Books, New York.
