TOPIC OF THE WEEK: AMERICA'S TRAGEDY: HELPING STUDENTS DEAL WITH ISSUES OF GRIEF AND DISASTER
In these hours of national agony, as we sense our security vanishing in the flames and smoke of unforeseen terrorism, many of us wonder what and how much to say to our children. The website selected will assist educators in giving students accurate information, comfort, and reassurance as they deal with America's Greatest Tragedy.
September 18, 2001
"No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent…any man's death, diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; …. Know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.
-John Donne, Devotions"
Dear Subscribers, It is difficult to put into words the myriad of emotions that are felt as a result of the horrific act that has occurred in our nation. However, as educators we need to find the words to express our feelings, comfort our students and bring reason into a time overshadowed by irrational acts. It is my intent that the websites selected for this newsletter will assist you in this task. The staff at WVIZ/PBS extends their deepest sympathy to those touched by this American tragedy.
God Bless America!

Read
The Way of the World: From the Dawn of Civilizations to the Eve of the Twenty-First Century
by David Fromkin.
The author, who is a distinguished Boston University historian, writes what is described as "a gentle stroll through the millennia." The causes and implications of the industrial-scientific-technological resolution are the author's main theme, but he also describes the earliest appearance of moral thought and the earliest aspirations to world order. This book is a 'worldly, civilized, and genial' read for those of us who look for a readable, historically correct, but not overly stodgy or pretentious telling of the history of civilization. "The rich information resources to be found in cyberspace are both a blessing and a curse. Unless students have a toolkit of thinking and problem-solving skills which match the feasts of information so readily available, they may emerge from their meals bloated with techno-garbage, information junk food or info-fat. We must teach students to graze and digest the offerings thoughtfully in order to achieve insight." Jamie McKenzie "Can Teacher Attitudes About Learning Be Changed? An Exploratory Study,"

RE Phlebotomy Forward to
September 11, 2002
It seems like just yesterday that I was listening to NPR and I heard that there were so many people showing up at blood donation centers that many were being turned away. It wasn't yeterday, it was nearly a year ago, and the flood of donors was in reaction to September 11th. Now, according to a report that I heard on NPR earlier this week, there is a shortage largely due to the fact that the list of reasons for disqualification has grown.
American Red Cross Blood Services @ http://www.redcross.org/services/biomed/blood/
"Started as a war relief effort to provide life-saving blood for soldiers during World War II, Red Cross Blood Services has grown to become an industry leadercollecting and distributing half the nation's blood supply." Read the FAQs, Learn About Blood Donation, Organize a Blood Drive, or just click on Give Blood to find the phone number, 1-800-GIVE-LIFE, to find out where you can donate.

For Kids of All Ages Forward to
October 14, 1999

Last week's Youth Services Committee Workshop was well attended and entertaining. In addition to learning techniques for teaching children to use the World Wide Web we visited the following web sites which were recommended by some of those attending the workshop:
BONUS.COM the SuperSite for Kids @ http://www.bonus.com/
This is what amounts to a "safe" portal to the many websites and games and more that the people at BONUS.COM have connected to. Their home page opens up another browser in your PC and only lets you visit the sites that they have selected. It looks to me like they have selected a lot of very good sites. Make no mistake: this is not a filter. There's nothing to stop you from going back to the "home page" window and going to any URL that you can type in the location bar.
Welcome to ePlay! @ http://www.eplay.com/
"Welcome to ePlay, your best connection between home and school. ePlay is a free educational site that enhances children's learning by connecting kids, parents and teachers through the Web. Our primary goal is to ensure a safe place where your children can learn and play."
They want you to sign-up, but it's free. This site is great for kids who are interested in geography.
