Current Events: Sports in Africa
Featured Story
Between January 19th and February 20th, 2002 school children from all over Africa along with their parents and friends were glued to their radios and TV sets. What was so important? They had football(soccer) fever! After an elimination process that lasted nearly six months, national teams representing 16 African countries earned the right to participate in the African Cup of Nations tournament, the premiere spoeting event in Africa. The African Cup of Nations tournament takes place every two years hosted by a different African country. In 2002 the West African country of Mali hosted the tournament.

Twenty-Five Great Ideas for Teaching Current Events!
Looking for ways to work news into your classroom curriculum? Check out these great ideas for connecting current events to all subjects! Young Americans today know less and care less about what's going on in the world than young Americans of previous generations did. Those were the conclusions presented in a 1995 report from the Times Mirror Center for the People and the Press (now called the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press). "On average, only 20 percent of respondents aged 18 to 29 paid close attention to the stories covered in the News Interest Index [an index of top news stories]." Attentiveness rose to 23 percent among respondents 30 to 49 and to 29 percent among those 50 years and older. So what can be done to raise students' interest in and awareness of the stories making news headlines? Another study, highlighted in the introduction to the Education World story

The equestrian program at Smith has much to offer you, whether you’re just beginning or are already an advanced rider. Intercollegiate competition challenges accomplished riders, and instruction is offered from beginner through advanced levels. You may board a horse at Smith or ride and show any of 25 other horses. The program’s focus is hunter seat equitation and basic dressage and involves about 100 students each semester.
Almost all riders compete in some manner while at Smith, and many try out in the fall for the intercollegiate team. About 25 to 30 riders are chosen to fill the eight divisions, ranging from beginner walk-trot to open (Medal/Maclay). Intercollegiate showing is unique because riders are mounted on horses drawn by lot and provided by the host college. Students compete in about eight Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) shows each year, where they may qualify for the regional, zone and national finals. Smith has sent riders to the finals consistently and has won the regional champion or reserve high point college title on a regular basis for 18 years. In addition to intercollegiate showing, you may compete on the American Horse Show Association (AHSA) circuit or in local schooling shows. Students also participate in clinics with noted professionals such as Ray Texel, Tim Kees, Judy Richter, Frank Madden, Bernie Traurig and Leslie Howard. Each year, Smith hosts two intercollegiate shows, six schooling shows and two clinics.
