83. Afro-Cuban Essentials
A page dedicated to the history of the clave, with sections on both son, and rhumba clave and music sheets.
http://www.thedrumclub.com/DRUMSET/essentialstyles/afrocuban/pt1clave.HTM
In our own western pop culture, we have the "backbeat", or counts 2 & 4 that are important to the feel & groove of the music. Likewise, the CLAVE (KLAH-vey) rhythms are the heart and soul of Afro-Cuban music. According to African tradition, young drummers must play clave for several years before they are allowed to play a drum in the ensemble! To learn this style & eventually be successful at playing it on the drumset, you must first learn to groove with the different clave rhythms before progressing on to the other rhythms!
As an instrument, claves are simply two pieces of wood that are struck together to make a tone. In most cases, the instrument is made from maple, grenadilla or other hardwoods. Some newer versions are made from fiberglass to produce an extremely loud, cutting sound.
The word "clave" literally means "key" - the clave is therefore the key to all Afro-Cuban rhythms. It serves as a timekeeper, the jell that holds the ensemble together.
The clave is characterized by two bars of music, each having two beats. In one bar, the clave will contain THREE strokes, in the next, TWO strokes. The "direction" of the clave is determined by which measure has three & which has two. A

In 1869 the government of Hungary accepted the suggestion of Dr. Emanuel Hermann for using postal cards. In 1870 the first printed card was issued in Hungary and in 1873 the first card appeared in the United States. I have cards relating to Cuba from 1898 but would like to know if anyone has information on the history of cards in the Island. Postcard collecting, deltiology, is the third largest collectable hobby in the world, after coin and stamp collecting. Postcards in the pre-email times, were the most economical means of communication both for personal and business purposes, and even today they are a most popular form of souvenir for travelers. Cuba has always been a tourist paradise. The beauty of the land, , the magic of the old colonial buildings and streets, the attraction of it's music, beaches, sports, and people establish a unique relationship with those who visit the island even if it is for a short time. And for those born there, even if they have not lived there for years, Cuba is always present in their hearts. The present collection of postcards shows why tourists love Cuba. It is also a tribute to the land where I had a beautiful childhood. - HILDA

87. The Cuban Missile Crisis
Brief history, timeline, and RealAudio recordings from the period.

The Cuban Missile Crisis, October 18-29, 1962
Listening to these audio files requires installation of the free RealAudio Player. It is available from RealAudio. Please note: The source tapes for these audio materials are poor, requiring higher quality streaming at a minimum modem speed of 28.8 kbps. Macs with 040 processors will not be able to stream these materials.
In October 1996, The John F. Kennedy Library released a set of tape recordings documenting the crisis for the period October 18 to 29, 1963. These recordings were made in the Oval Office. They include President Kennedy's personal recollections of discussions, conversations with his advisors, meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and members of the president's executive committee. We are releasing four tapes in this series now. Others will follow. The tapes are unedited and represent digital copies of the materials distributed by the Library. The recordings were made using early technology (Dictabelt and similar devices). Microphones and placement also add noise and distortion. In short, these recordings will prove challenging to some listeners. At first, the voices may sound like honking geese. But if you persevere, you will become a first-hand observer to one of the most important events of the cold war.

United Nations: Cuban Missile Crisis Debate, 1962
Between Adlai Stevenson and V. A. Zorin in the United Nations Security Council, October 23, 1962 Mr. STEVENSON (United States of America): I have asked for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to bring to your attention a grave threat to the Western Hemisphere and to the peace of the world. Last night, the President of the United States reported the recent alarming military developments in Cuba. . . . In view of this transformation of Cuba into a base for offensive weapons of sudden mass destruction, the President announced the initiation of a strict quarantine on all offensive military weapons under shipment to Cuba. He did so because, in the view of my Government, the recent developments in Cuba - the importation of the cold war into the heart of the Americas - constitute a threat to the peace of this hemisphere, and, indeed, to the peace of the world. The time has come for this Council to decide whether to make a serious attempt to bring peace to the world-or to let the United Nations stand idly by while the vast plan of piecemeal aggression unfolds, conducted in the hope that no single issue will seem consequential enough to mobilize the resistance of the free peoples. For my own Government, this question is not in doubt. We remain committed to the principles of the United Nations, and we intend to defend them. . . .

Cuban Missile Crisis

Probably at no time in this nation's history has the importance of aerial reconnaissance been demonstrated more dramatically than during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. In September and October of that year, Soviet officials had persistently denied their intent to install offensive weapons in Cuba, only 90 miles from U.S. shores, despite intelligence reports to the contrary. On Oct. 14, two USAF high-flying U-2 reconnaissance aircraft photographed portions of Cuba and analysis of these photos confirmed that bases were being constructed for intermediate-range missiles within striking distance of the United States. President John F. Kennedy placed the US armed forces on alert for whatever action might be necessary as USAF U-2 and RF-101 flights over Cuba continued, the latter aircraft sometimes flying at tree-top level. On Oct. 22, President Kennedy publicly announced details of the critical situation and declared that

BUY Montecristo cuban cigars are made in Havana, Cuba, and in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The tobacco produced in Cuba are not the same as those produced in the Dominican Republic, and ownership of the cigar factories are not the same.
Most the entire cigar manufacturing industry in Cuba was at one time owned or controlled by American interests. After the Cuban revolution of 1959, everything changed. After Fidel Castro assumed power, all cigar factories became nationalized and the former "Capitalist" factory owners were dispossessed of their businesses. American owners were simply screwed out of their assets and investments in Cuba. Many former factory owners and experienced cigar rollers decided to leave (flee!) the country and start new businesses in other countries.
