For one thing, Spanish is scarce here. A visitor is more likely to hear a Jamaican patois or Filipino Tagalog than South Florida's second language. Guest workers from Jamaica and the Philippines dominate the civilian contract market, doing everything from working the ferry that links the two sides of the base to baking pizzas at The Clipper Club, a combination bar, pool hall and pizza parlor. A Cuban cafecito is even more scarce. You have to head back to Calle Ocho for a classic

Cuban Culture
Cuba is a country that is rich in culture. This is due in part to the diversity of the Cuban people a diversity that expresses itself via cultural media like music, dress, art, and literature. Indeed the uniquely Cuban spirit manisfests itself through the Salsa, the guayabera, baseball, and even...rice and beans. So, I welcome you to something different. Welcome to Cuba not via politics, economics, or history but through its culture.

CUBAN CULTURE
Cuban culture has been strongly influenced by the Cuban Revolution. The Revolution began in 1959, which ended in the exile of Dictator Fulegencio Batista. The Revolutions was led by Fidel Castro: utilizing a guerilla style of warfare. Support had been driven up for Castro by Anti-Batista groups and by peasant towns and villages, which were attacked due to their support for Castro. Batista and his generals realized the situation was hopeless and fled to Spain with $300 million, amassed through bribery and embezzlement. This revolution established a new government, which had many ambitious social programs. Shortly after the revolution the U.S. established an economic embargo on Cuba. By doing this, the U.S. has discouraged many companies from engaging in business with Cuba. Cuba now estimates that the embargo has cost them as much as $60 billion US dollars.
Due to the failed relations between the U.S. and Cuba the Soviet Union offered economic assistance. With Castro's programs failing, the country was in turmoil and had to accept Soviet support. This led to the Cuba providing the Soviet Union with its sugar supply while the Cuban Government adopted a communist form of government. This has led to Cuba becoming one of the most egalitarian countries in the world. All is shared amongst the Cuban people. Cuban Workers
The country is primarily a working class country. In Cuba there is no ruling class, society here does not consist of a cast system as India does. The government employs most individuals in Cuba. The average Cuban spends 200 pesos per month, which is the equivalent of $10.00 U.S. Those that receive donations from US relatives are slightly better off.

NOVEMBER 1999
VOLUME 2 NUMBER 1 Buena Vista Social Club Spotlights Vibrant Cuban Culture by Hank Williams
There is no such thing as a victimless war and the Cold War was no exception. Aside from the various "Hot Wars" (Vietnam, Korea) that flared up as a result, there are a lot of left over details that haven't been ironed out. Cuba and US policy toward it is one of those details. After the fall of the Soviet Union it is pretty hard to consider Cuba a threat to US security or policy in any serious way, but old habits die hard. After decades of painting Cuba and Fidel Castro as the local bogeyman, how can you turn around and admit that it wasn't really all that much of a threat after all? That's only one of many flaws in the blockade and foreign policy in general, but the human side of the issue and the one that (as always) is forgotten is the plight of the Cuban people. They've managed to survive being a pawn of the superpowers and have a vibrant and beautiful culture, which, ultimately, is what Buena Vista Social Club is all about.
Ry Cooder and Director Wim Wenders use music as a guise to take the audience on a breathtaking and warm look into Cuban culture. The pictures fill in details of the story that the music leaves out. Wenders pointed out that he, "[couldn't] separate their lives and their history from the music itself. That music is so emotional and rich and so full of their life stories that you just can't divide it up."

GEOGRAPHY
Cuba is the largest, most varied and most beautiful of the Greater Antilles islands. It is long and narrow, extending approximately 1,260 km east-west in length; its width ranges from 193 km to 32 km. No point in the Island is more than 80 km from the sea. Cuba's territory, or the Cuban Archipelago, includes the Island of Youth (Isla de la Juventud) and several coastal islets and cays; it covers a land area of 110,861 km2.
Cuba, often called the "Pearl of the Antilles," has a subtropical trade wind climate, adequate rainfall, significant mineral resources, and vast areas of level fertile land suitable for mechanized farming.
To the south of Matanzas is Cienaga de Zapata, known for its marshy lowlands where crocodiles are commercially raised. Also in this province is Varadero, known for its beaches of fine white sand, clear and transparent waters and comfortable resorts.
Santiago de Cuba, also rich in tradition and architectural treasures, is located on the south coast at the island's eastern end. The rugged topography of the Sierra Maestra, with elevations of up to 1,980 m above sea level, is unique in the island and famous for its sceneries of breath-taking beauty and unbelievable variety.
