Kansas harvest begins early this early
Thursday, August 31, 2000 A Kansas State University crop specialist says Kansas grain farmers have begun harvesting about 10 days to two weeks earlier than usual. While some parts of the country are looking for bumper crops, many Kansas farmers are struggling with a lack of moisture and August temperatures that have routinely climbed over 100 degrees, said Dale Fjell, crops specialist with K-State Research and Extension. Other areas in the state, however, have had timely rains and should have reasonably good yields. That's particularly true in southeast Kansas, where some farmers were able to plant early. "Our variable weather conditions are really going to show up in the yields," Fjell said. The variability in crop condition - and potential yields - can be linked to numerous factors, including this year's unusually spotty rainfall, different planting dates, hybrid selection and moisture conservation practices or the lack of, he said. "This year, anything that was done to conserve moisture - we're seeing the difference. In some areas, it's the difference between some grain and no grain," he said.

Too often, growers want to produce what they are comfortable in growing - only to realize too late that so many people are already producing the same crop that there is little demand for what they grow. During this workshop you will learn where about new opportunities. This will be followed by a workshop giving more detail to the potential of crops such as lilac, lavender, and much more. ISHS Acta Horticulturae 21: I East African Horticultural Symposium
SECTION F - BEVERAGE, SPICE AND MISCELLANEOUS CROPS - COCOA IN UGANDA, ITS PROMISE AND PROBLEMS
Author:
A.M. Emechebe Abstract:
The world production of cocoa beans from 1946 to 1967 is given in table 1, showing that about 66 per cent of the beans were produced in Africa. Cocoa plays an important part in the economy of countries such as Ghana and Nigeria and between 1963 and 1965 contributed 67 per cent and 17 per cent respectively to the total value of their exports (UN Commodity Survey, 1967). Cocoa is also exported by other African countries such as Angola, Cameroun, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sao Tome, Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea and Togo. Attempts to produce cocoa in Uganda have encountered various problems which have so far prevented the establishment of a flourishing cocoa producing industry.
