Croatian History (cont.) Left: Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia

On the disintegration of Austria-Hungary in October 1918, a Croatian National Council took power in Zagreb and called for union with the other South Slavic parts of Austria-Hungary. Dalmatia, a separate Habsburg crownland since 1815, also recognized the authority of the Croatian National Council. Centralization of the new Kingdom under Serbian control, concretized in the Vidovdan Constitution of 1921, sparked resistance by its other nationalities. In Croatia, this resistance was led by the Croatian Peasants Party (HSS) under Stjepan Radic. In 1928, Radic was assassinated in the Parliament Building in Belgrade, but the HSS continued its activism under Vlatko Macek. To counter what he perceived as unrest, in 1929 King Alexander abolished Croatia and the other old territorial units and replaced them with Banovinas, renaming the country Yugoslavia. Continued Croatian resistance to centralization eventually produced a compromise in 1939 which established a Croatian Banovina, including almost all of pre-1929 Croatia, as well as much of Bosnia, with Macek as Ban (roughly Viceroy) of Croatia.

Is the Croatian Coat of Arms really unconstitutional and should it and the flag be changed - with the designer Brois Ljubicic and historian prof. dr. Niksa Stancic
The flag - a visual code
The flag project of the designer Boris Ljubicic was made in July 1990. - The idea is based on synthesis of the historical elements: the tricolour and the Croatian coat of arms [CoA]. The tricolour is very frequent flag, and therefore the CoA is the basic differential element. The economic, political, cultural and sports contest of the new state requires recognisable, effective and differential visual characteristics. The interchangeable squares already represent different contents ¯ HRT [Croatian national TV house], tourism, Zagreb International Fair ¯ and there is need to link it with the basic, ceremonial, offical and unique identity of the state, and that is her flag. Japan, Switzerland and US treat their flag as a visual code or a symbol of grat corporation - explains Ljubicic.
We are not a monarchy, so we do not need coats of arms

More than 350 years ago, the Croats initiated one such influential occurrence. Although started in the 17th century in a small region on the Adriatic coast, the consequences of this event are still very much evident the world over. 600 million people now wear the ubiquitous symbol of Croatia around their necks, close to their hearts. Did you know that Croatia is the mother country of the necktie? In his book, La Grande Histoire de la Cravate (Flamarion, Paris, 1994), François Chaille tells us about the appearance of this article of clothing and how it became fashionable. "… Around the year 1635, some six thousand soldiers and knights came to Paris to give their support to King Louis XlV and Cardinal Richelieu. Among them were a great number of Croatian mercenaries led by a ban, or Croatian viceroy. The traditional outfit of these Croats aroused interest on account of the unusual and picturesque scarves distinctively tied about their necks. The scarves were made of various cloths, ranging from coarse material for common soldiers, to fine cotton and silk for officers. This elegant "Croatian style" immediately enamoured the French, who were delighted by the new article of clothing, which had been previously unknown in Europe. Around the year 1650, during the reign of Louis XIV, the Croatian scarf was accepted in France, above all in court, where military ornaments were much admired. The fashionable expression, ’a la croate’, soon evolved into a new French word, which still exists today: la cravate. This innovation symbolized the height of culture and elegance. On his return to England from exile, Charles II brought with him this new word in fashion. Over the next ten years, this fashion novelty spread across Europe, as well as across the colonies on the American continent..."

Country Info Croatia Introduction Croatia General Data Croatia Maps Croatia Culture ... Croatia Time and Date Croatia History Back to Top The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Croatia were Illyrians, who were conquered by the Romans by ad 10. Their land, Illyricum, became the Roman provinces of Pannonia and Dalmatia. As Roman power declined, repeated invasions and widespread destruction by mostly Germanic tribes culminated in the 6th –century in conquest by the Avars, a nomadic people of Mongolian and Turkic origin. Slavic tribes, who probably came with the Avars or were simply swept along from their original homeland (most likely the area of present-day Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus), settled over most of central and southeastern Europe. In Pannonia and Dalmatia they came to be called Croats (Hrvati), a name of disputed origin. A disputed succession to the throne following the reigns of Kresimir IV (1058-1074) and Zvonimir (1075-1089) led to a Hungarian invasion. The two kingdoms united under the Hungarian king, either by the choice of the Croat nobility or by Hungarian force, in 1102. From then until 1918 kings of Hungary were also kings of Croatia, represented by a governor (ban), but Croatia kept its own parliament (Sabor) and considerable autonomy. After 1420 the city-state of Venice controlled all of the Dalmatian region. In 1526 King Louis II of Hungary was killed and his army destroyed by Ottoman forces in the Battle of Mohács, bringing more than 150 years of Ottoman rule to most of Hungary and Croatia. By 1699 the Austrian Habsburgs, who inherited King Louis’s crowns in 1526, had expelled the Ottomans from Hungary and Croatia.

From the history of Zagreb University and Faculty of Philosophy
The first course of studies in philosophy in Croatia were established at the Jesuit College in Zagreb.
On September 23, 1669, the Jesuit Academy in the Free Royal City of Zagreb was granted the status of a university by Leopold I, Emperor and King of Croatia and Hungary. The university henceforth became the Neoacademia Zagrabiensis, a public institution of higher education offering courses in theology and philosophy. The Royal Academy of Sciences (Regia Scientiarum Academia) was founded in 1776 by a decree issued by Queen and Empress Maria Theresia. The Academy had faculties of philosophy and theology as well as a law school. The Croatian Parliament constituted a legal basis to allow a future foundation of the University of Zagreb. A parliamentary article regulating the establishment of the University was signed by Emperor Franz Josef I upon his visit to Zagreb in 1869. The act received Royal Assent on January 5, 1814. The modern University of Zagreb was established on October 19, 1874. The University comprised the Law School, the Faculty of Theology, and the Faculty of Philosophy. At the time the Faculty of Philosophy consisted of the following departments: Philosophy, World History and National History, as well as Classical and Slavic Philologies. There were only 6 professors and 26 students.

October 1995 HISTORY OF ART The history of art embraces the entire area of the visual arts and their formal evolution through time and space. Since an essential element of our national heritage and identity is dealt with here, academic research in this field tends to concentrate on the artistic heritage of Croatia. Nikola Bozidarevic's Polyptychan, 16th century A church in Belac, 18th century Visual phenomena of all kinds, individual works of art, particular personalities, cultural monuments, the shaping of Croatia in terms of urban development and the environment are dealt with in monographs and through the collection of documentary evidence; they are examined in topographical and taxonomic terms, as well as in terms of style and historical period; data of this kind is then classified, interpreted and evaluated in a systematic fashion. Comparisons are drawn which involve reciprocal influences, contributions and matching relationships in the context of general European trends and developments in the world at large. The study of the artistic and historical legacy of Croatia was long developed mainly in terms of conservation and the establishing of museum collections. Systematic research began in the early fifties. The first time that it was officially proclaimed was in 1848 and under the influence of revolutionary movements in Europe, a simple tricolour was made. The flag was, of course, without any coat. However, it was used as local flag in a big empire, so it remained more or less internationally unknown, but it became one of the most important symbols of the Croatian people. Very often it can be seen on old postcards, most often together with Croatian coats (normally not on the flag, but from time to time as a part of the flag).
After the end of the World War Croatia proclaimed independence, and a tricolour became the state flag, again without coats. The collision with the Dutch flag didn't became, as a matter of fact, a problem, because the state was short living. After a short time, Croatia was united with Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the

Twentieth century sculptor Ivan Mestrovic is the pride and joy of Croatia's art world. His work can be seen in town squares throughout the country, and he has also designed several imposing buildings, including the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb. Croatian literary figures include 16th century playwright Marin Drzic and 20th century novelist, playwright and poet Miroslav Krleza - the latter's multi-volume work, Banners , is a saga about Croatian life at the turn of the 20th century. Croatian folk music is a hotch-potch of styles. The kolo , a lively Slavic round dance, is accompanied by Roma-style violinists or players of the tambura , a Croatian mandolin. Dalmatia's gentle guitar and accordion bands have a distinctly Italian flavour. Croats are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, while virtually all Serbs are Eastern Orthodox. In addition to various doctrinal differences, Orthodox Christians venerate icons, let priests marry, and couldn't care less about the Pope. Thoroughly suppressed during Yugoslavia's communist period, Roman Catholicism is now making a comeback, with most churches strongly attended every Sunday. Muslims make up 1.1% of the population and Protestants 0.4%. There's a tiny Jewish population in Zagreb. Croatians love a bit of oil, and among the greasy delicacies you'll find here are

    HISTORY OF THE CROATIAN LANGUAGE
When the Croats migrated in the 6th century from White Croatia (i.e. in the present-day region around Krakow in Poland), they brought with them, and subsequently developed , a palaeo-Croatian language, a branch of Palaeo-Slavonic. This language was divided into a number of dialects, among which the kaj dialect predominated in the North, the ca dialect in the South (Dalmatia) and part of Bosnia and the sto dialect in the South East. The dialect boundaries, however, cannot be clearly drawn. There were always areas overlapping and mixed dialects also existed. At this early time in Croatian history, there was little linguistic differentiation in the Slavic world. The differences between the Croatian and the Czech dialects, for instance, were no greater than those that exist today between British and American English. The first major text written in Croatian Slavonic is the Baska Tablet of 1100 recording the donation of a site by King Zvonimir to the Benedictine convent of the island Krk. This document, written in the Glagolitic script, was found in St. Lucy's church near Baska on the island of Krk. It stands as a cornerstone of Croatian literary development although fragments of earlier inscriptions written in the Glagolitic alphabet and dating from the eleventh century have been found on the islands of Krk and Cres (Valun Tablet) and in Istria (Plomin). Fragments of the oldest known Croatian Glagolitic manuscript - The Glagolita Clozianus (the beginning of the 11th century) - is a collection of sermons. The codex belonged to the dukes Frankopans from the island Krk.

After the last king, Zvonimir, had died in 11 CT AD, Croatian lords recognized a common king for Croatia and Hungary (Ladiszlav I.) in treaty called "Pacta Conventa" (1102), thus making a personal union with Hungary. The two crowns would remain connected until the end of World War I. After the 1526 Battle of Mohacs , the Hungarian dynasty was extinguished, and Croatian nobility elected the Austrian Ferdinand Habsburg king. During the next 200 years, the
