It is one thing to know what my philosophy is. I had such an experience in a workshopon critical thinking taught by Dr. Craig Nelson, a biologist from Indiana
http://com.pp.asu.edu/classes/jerryb/oncriticalthinking.htm
On Critical Thinking Jerry L. Buley, Ph.D. A Philosophy of Learning I am reasonably sure that in most classes you are not confronted with an instructor's philosophy of learning. I do so in this class because the way this class will operate may be quite different from the way other teachers would teach such a class. In the first few days of class we will cover the philosophy behind how the course will be taught as well as the format for how the class will proceed. A major goal I have for this class is to help you develop your critical thinking skills especially as you might use them to evaluate research and theories in interpersonal communication. Notice that my goal is not to inject knowledge into your waiting mind. Any method of teaching which attempts to inject knowledge into waiting student's minds is at best ill informed and at worst does a grave injustice to the student. Paternalistic teachers using such methods assume that student are incapable of critical thinking and that they, the teacher, must predigest then deliver knowledge so that the student may regurgitate in on tests. It assumes that students are incapable of organizing and synthesizing information for themselves. Because I do not believe that students are incompetent in this way, and, since I want to increase your ability to organize and synthesize information on interpersonal communication theory, I believe I must use other methods of instruction. A major aspect of this course will focus on questions which have no single right or wrong answer - topics on which a simple transfer of information from instructor to student, from me to you, is inadequate. In this class, the responsibility for your learning in upon you. This means my participation will be less central. I have three obligations using this philosophy of learning. One is to select information which is indicative of the present state of knowledge in interpersonal communication. Another is to design the environment in which learning can be maximized. The last is to evaluate your learning.

S TRAND 1. S ALVAGING P HILOSOPHY OF E DUCATION Professor Okshevsky is concerned that the educational community may misinterpret Rorty's doubts about whether philosophy has anything to offer education. He notes that Rorty has expressed the belief that philosophical reflection, far from enlightening educational deliberation, may interfere with our achieving our larger educational purposes. He also quotes Rorty's comment that "The best that us philosophers can do is to develop a suitable rhetoric for the presentation of new [practical] suggestions - making them a bit more palatable." Wrongly interpreted, these views could lead to the educational community's discounting the possibility that philosophy can make any valuable contributions to public deliberations about educational policy and practice.

Title: "Critical Thinking and the 'Trivial Pursuit' Theory of Knowledge", Teaching Philosophy Author: John E. McPeck Date: January 2002 Reviewer: John Sellars
Summary
[295] The author has written about critical thinking and has faced criticism. [296] In contrast to many, the author suggests that thinking in general is impossible; it always has to have some form of subject matter. The same applies to critical thinking. Thus one cannot teach critical thinking in general. Different subjects require different skills. Proper critical thinking involves a sceptical attitude along with relevant knowledge in a wide range of subjects. [297] The best way to cultivate this is by a broad liberal education, and not by special 'critical thinking' courses. This is in direct opposition to the assumptions of the 'informal logic movement':

Title: "Critical Thinking Courses: Their Value and Limits", Teaching Philosophy Author: Ludwig F. Schlecht Date: February 2002 Reviewer: John Sellars
Summary
[131] Recently there has been a growth in critical thinking courses as a supplement to more formal courses in logic. But can critical thinking be taught independently of the material that needs to be analysed? McPeck [in Teaching Philosophy 8/4 (1985)] has argued that it cannot. He claims that there are no general reasoning skills independent of subject-based expertise. While some of his criticisms are misguided, he nevertheless has a point. [132] The aim of this article is to examine what the limits are to the claims that can be made for critical thinking courses.

Is Critical Thinking an Appropriate Educational Philosophy for Korea? John Michael McGuire Hanyang University 1. Introduction: critical thinking is coming to Korea In the preface to the third edition of Critical Reasoning , the authors point out that when the text was first published in 1982 it was one of very few texts designed to help students improve their ability to evaluate critically what they hear and read in a variety of everyday contexts (Cederblom Paulsen, 1991, p.xi). However, by the time the second edition was published in 1986, courses in informal logic and critical thinking had become common in universities throughout North America and had even been installed as graduation requirements at some of these universities. Since then, course offerings and enrollments in this area have continued to increase, and there has been a broadly based movement to infuse critical thinking instruction across the curriculum. As a result, critical thinking has not only permeated the curriculum at the university, high school, and even elementary school levels, it has also passed beyond L1 contexts into ESL classes as well. At this point in time, critical thinking is clearly much more than just another undergraduate course: it is an educational philosophy.
