Between 1981 and 1991, the occurrence of violent crimes has also increased dramatically by more than thirty percent. Sixty percent of all inmates have previously been incarcerated for committing prior crimes, and ten to thirty-five percent of those who are in jail also suffer from mental illness. Rising to the Challenge and Meeting an Urgent Need Crime on the rise. Increasingly, people are choosing to handle conflict through violent, retaliative measures. As these trends continue, issues of assessing mental illness and determining appropriate strategies for rehabilitation will gain urgency. At CSPP, a new group of professionals forensic psychologists is working to help reverse the statistics cited above and to combat a pattern of conflict going out of control. Through CSPP-Fresno's new PsyD in forensic psychology, establishing less than a year ago, students are learning how to provide services that increase the effectiveness of the collaboration between psychology and the criminal justice system in mediating conflicts and determining justice. At this time, CSPP is virtually the only institution in the country offering a graduate-level program of this kind. People cannot be blamed for their misconceptions. In my four year undergraduate program forensics was mentioned only once. And what was mentioned was a useless definition that really did not explain at all the intricacies of the field. The most common definition is that, "Forensic Psychology is the application of psychological knowledge to the criminal justice system." Well what does that tell us? Not much. When I read that definition I asked myself, what psychological knowledge is being applied and what exactly is the criminal justice system? The answers as I eventually found out are very diverse. The easiest way to explain the field is to break down the criminal justice system into its own sub- components and see where psychological knowledge can be applied to these areas. The Beginning - Criminal Investigation Round Two - The Court System Frequently, people forget about the applications of forensic psychology to civil law. Often a forensic psychologist is asked to make evaluations of defendants or plaintiffs disability or level of trauma. From these evaluations the court can decide whether compensatory damages should be provided. Civil-Forensic Psychologists also work on child custody, sexual harassment, and immigration cases. Virtually any civil matter that requires psychological evaluation may include the work of a Forensic Psychologist. It is important to remember that not all Forensic Psychologists work with violent criminals.
