Carnival in Bolivia!
Bolivia
Dates:
February 2 - February 15, 2002
The pre-Lenten Carnaval tradition in the mining town of Oruro, Bolivia, began over two hundred years ago with a group of workers dancing to honor the Virgin - while dressed as devils! Today in Oruro, a thousand devil dancers join forty other groups for the flamboyant week-long Carnival celebration. Costumed dancers masquerade in roles as diverse as furry bears, llama herders, slaves, Comanches, gorillas and Inca kings. The troupes attend Mass at dawn, then dance along a 3-kilometer parade route to the church where they kneel before the Virgin of the Mineshaft. This annual Carnival celebration is the largest and most important social and artistic event in Bolivia - and one of the least studied festivals in Latin America. UREP participants will document all aspects of CARNIVAL 2002 organization, preparations, music, dance, and so forth, but especially focusing on the fabulous costumes and masks. A separate event, AƱata Andina, the indigneous people's carnival, will also be documented. It includes diverse groups from outlying areas, wearing traditional festival clothing and playing traditional instruments. Field Work: Team members will work with festival expert Cynthia LeCount-Samake from UC Davis. She is an experienced UREP expedition leader. Participants will gather information on all aspects of the festival, from costume design and fabrication to social and economic factors. The team will begin documentation with several days in the city of La Paz, visiting the studios of the artisans who create the masks and costumes. Then in Oruro, participants will photograph the Carnival parade, and interview the costume embroiderers, maskmakers, dancers and musicians who lend their skills and passion to this amazing event. Costumes and textiles will also be collected and documented for University study collections.

LENGUAGE: A'ingae. LINGUISTIC FAMILY: Influence of the Western Tucano and the Chibcha families. POPULATION: Approximately 500 members in Ecuador and 200 in Colombia. AUTODENOMINATION: A'i. LOCATION: Upper Aguarico River, the Sinangue River, and on the Ecuadorean-Colombian border. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: This group has not been studied extensively. Traditional organization is based on patrilineal groups, known as antia. The role of the curaca or tuturica (chief of shaman) is decisive, both in religious and political terms. Since 1955, missionaries affiliated with the Summer Istitute of Linguistics have been successful in their efforts to bring the Cofan, who have traditionally lived in dwellings dispersed throughout their territory, toegether in large, or nucleated, settlements. They have also discouraged participation in traditional practices, including the yage ritual. Colonization and the activities of petroleum companies and agroindustries have obligued the Cofan to search for ways to adapt their changing world

    ANCIENT MONGOLIAN AND KOREAN FRIENDSHIP
Identified in their Traditional Costume By Ch.Sumya
CLOTHING and costume are an important part of identity and culture for any ethnic group. Clothing reflects the nation's way of life, customs, and philosophies. The Mongol race has its own traditional clothing which is unique from other nation's but bears similarities to a number of ethnic group's clothing in Central and Eastern Asia. The national dress of the Mongols has a rich history and is an artistic tradition that has developed over many thousands of years.
Mongolian national costume is closely related with the extreme climate, livestock husbandry, customs, culture and practices of everyday life. People speaking languages from the Altaic language group (Manchus, Turkic, Mongolian, Korean and Japanese) have many cultural similarities including traditional clothing similarities.
In the historical Mongolian book, "The Secret History of the Mongols," five coloured countries are described: blue Mongols (Mongolian babies are born with blue spot on their buttocks), Black Khitans, White Koreans (the white-clothed race), Yellow Sartuul (present in Uzbekistan, Tajikstan and some other Middle Eastern countries) and Red Tungad. The five countries have developed close relations in politics, culture and trading.
