Your Child Needs Keyboard Skills Today, But Maybe There is a Light at the "End of the Tunnel"

Keyboarding is a skill for everybody these days. Gone are the days when "typing" was something for secretaries and writers. Students need to record their thoughts, write class papers and send e-mail messages to friends across town or across the world. Third grade is a good time to start teaching keyboarding skills. Children have the coordination necessary by then. Plus, they often have the desire to learn. For home teaching, buy one of the popular keyboarding CD ROMs available such as "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing". With encouragement from you and some self-motivation from your child, this may be enough to get started. Some schools include keyboarding in their computer curriculum. If this occurs, your child may be regularly practicing keyboarding drills. Be sure and ask what software is used and how the drills are made to be fun. Many children learn at after school enrichment classes. Look for an enrichment class that uses a variety of software programs, alternates accuracy drills with speed drills and gives students frequent encouragement to improve their skills. But maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. IBM recently began selling voice-recognition software called

The art of engraving music has always been a time consuming and rather expensive process. Several treatises and tomes have been written about the subject, and the study of engraving took years to learn. The personal computer has changed all of that, making professional looking output available to the average musician. While many sequencing programs offer limited notation options, if you are serious about doing notation on your computer, then you need to look at a dedicated notation program August 9, 2001

Introduction
The computer is a versatile and powerful tool for you and your organization. It enables you to work more effectively and to communicate with people around the world. A computer is a machine that receives, processes, and stores information electronically. Computers can pass information to each other in the same way that telephones do. Because computers do so many things, it's important to keep in mind that this is a tool to help you do what you want. Some of the things computers can enable you to do include:
  • creating documents accounting and calculating sending and receiving e-mail messages finding information publishing information
In the Computer Basics section we provide information on how to set up and maintain your computer, how to use common office productivity tools, and how to avoid injury and fatigue while using a computer. Don't be afraid to get to know your computer inside and out! Once you get started you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

But back to my initial point…keyboard shortcuts...I use them all the time. I love my mouse but I love my keyboard too and by the end of a long day I'm using the keystrokes with increased frequency to free up cramped muscles etc. Another plus for keystrokes (apart from being a time saver) is that people who struggle with mouse skills, free movement and precise co-ordination can access most functions with relative ease…it's just knowing where to find them and what they do. Some are well known as they are even detailed on control menus like [HERE] and then you'll find little gems like CRTL+C (copy) CRTL+V (paste) CRTL+Z (undo) which are highly versatile and can be used in a variety of programs with a similar if not the same function but others are a little harder to find but equally as important and very useful so on the following pages I detailed the one's I use regularly with summary tables by key and program. Keyboard Basics by Sandy Berger Although a computer keyboard is based on the old typewriter layout, there are some major differences in the ways that keys are used. Computer keyboards also have additional keys. Learning to use the unique keys and special functions of the computer keyboard can save you time and make you more comfortable with your computer. Function Keys (Fkeys) Most computer keyboards have a row of Function keys at the top of the keyboard. These keys are marked F1 through F10 or F12. While they were widely used with older DOS programs, they are not as popular today. However many programs, including most of Microsoft's products, support use of the function keys. As a throwback to DOS days, you will find that the F1 key will often bring up a help menu. The function keys are frequently used in combination with other keys such as the CTRL key, the ALT key, and the Shift key. This results in a plethora of possible keyboard shortcuts. Look in the help menu of the program that you are using to find a list of the function keys and their uses.

Prior to an industrial accident I had been a 'two-finger' typist, subsequently I treated myself to an electric typewriter before starting to use a word-processor about three years ago. I soon found the various key combinations extremely difficult if not impossible on the standard Amstrad keyboard, but I then had the opportunity to try one of your single-handed keyboards. I was so impressed that I unhesitatingly ordered one. I consider the MALTRON keyboard to be as considerable advance on Qwerty keyboards as word processors are on electric typewriters"
