Although I had lessons in keyboarding a number of years ago, it isn't as if I sat down in a typing class every day and just learned to type. Yet these days, I have to admit that I am thankful for my keyboarding lessons. Had it not been for the fundamentals that I learned, such as finger positioning and the "proper" movement to strike certain keys, I assure you that my time spent at a keyboard would have been far more frustrating. I do not claim to be some sort of master typist, and I would note that all of us are always working to improve our skill level. You obviously can't expect your fourth graders to suddenly start typing all of their homework before turning it in, but you can teach a building block that will help them master typing in the long run. The placement of one's fingers on the keyboard is key when learning how to type. While it will require lots and lots of practice before your students begin to feel that they're typing with any sort of speed, you can accomplish a lot prior to the practice that only a typewriter or computer and time can provide.

    1. Lesson Description Summary:
Our students need to be able to efficiently enter text at the computer. At the beginning of each year we have the primary students use a word processor to begin to learn the keyboarding skills they will use forever. They use common word lists, simple sentences and content from their classroom to practice the keyboarding skills. CO- Colorado Academic Standards
    • Subject: Reading and Writing Standard 2: Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences. Writing and speaking are essential tools for learning, for success in the workplace, and for responsible citizenship. Developing a range of writing and speaking abilities requires extensive study, practice, and thinking. Students need frequent opportunities to write and speak for different audiences and purposes, and they need to be able to communicate expressively, informatively, and analytically. Growth in writing and speaking abilities occurs by applying skills to increasingly challenging communication tasks.
      • Grade/Level: Grades K-4 Performance Indicator: creating readable documents with legible handwriting or word processing at the appropriate time.

    Let's Have Some Lesson Plans!
After 9 years of teaching 2nd grade, I have many resources, ideas and even an ocassional inspiration. I would like to share some of my ideas here. Here is a reading lesson, others will be added as time allows.
If you have questions concerning these lessons, please emailme.

    1. Three Bears Link Up
Materials: Copy of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears (for teacher to read)
Photo copy of the answers and questions (click this line) cut into strips

students for this activity. This activity was specifically designed to review the tested reading
objectives for the Texas Assessmentof Academic Skill (TAAS).
After reading a version of Golidlocks and the Three Bears, the
students are given slips of paper that have statements
and questions (in that order) on them. The first student reads his/her
question only. The person who has the answer to that question on
his slip of paper reads it and then asks the question on his paper. Eventually the last question should be answerable by the first student as he reads the statement on his paper.
