Album Liner Notes (excerpt): Surprises abound on this recording. Most surprising is a recent discovered song written by Louis Armstrong but never recorded until now. It has been waiting around for over seventy years and we now have available this early creative effort by the greatest of all jazz performers. In the same vien, this session marks the first commercial recording of "Klondyke Blues" by Yellow Nunez. (It was previously recorded by the Louisiana Five in 1919, but the record company chose not to release it.) The Other composers herein represented were all involved in the early history of jazz in New Orleans. They played with and heard all the original legends (for which they also qualified) of this American musical style.

Savoy
1954 / Reissued 2001 Musicians: Songs: Rating: Charles Mingus was just one of many musicians who was short-changed in Ken Burns’ recent Manhattan-phone-book of a documentary Jazz. But what was worse than the blink-and-you-missed-him tribute Mingus got in the bloated retrospective, was the characterization he received. Burns could come up with nothing more original than saddling the famed bassist and composer with the jazz’s last-angry-man cliché. No follower of Mingus will deny the street-fighter reflexes and attitudes he brought to many of his greatest works. Pithecanthropus Erectus, Blues and Roots and The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady are all recordings that overpower a listener with power and surprise. They expose a musician at odds with the world and on the verge of eruption. But simply studying the chip on Mingus’ shoulder is missing a lot. He also left behind a wealth of material revealing a far more fragile and reflective side than is first remembered. 1957’s East Coasting is one good example. The taciturn recording, which paired Mingus with Bill Evans, among others, is a near-masterpiece of understatement. But simmering just below its surface, thanks to Jimmy Knepper’s robust trombone work, is a current of kinetic energy that reminds fans that the most common trait in Mingus’ work was momentum.

Made in the USA Jazz is probably the only legitimate musical style invented in the U.S.A. Even then, it should probably be considered a joint venture with Africa. Jazz is the fusion of classical and folk music with African influenced rhythmic syncopation . It began in the southern United States with field hollers and work songs that the slaves would sing while forced to labor. It is manifest in southern gospel styles, the rags of Scott Joplin, and in the nightclubs of New York and Chicago. The following sites are comprehensive. Feel free to explore them at your leisure.
