Political parties only emerged after the Meiji Restoration of 1868. In the following century or so, there were dozens of new parties born, dissolved and merged. There are currently (May, 2000) seven major political parties, described below. Changes happen with frightening regularity but we try to keep this page up to date. Of the seven parties, the LDP, New Komeito and Hoshuto form the current coalition government. Jiyu Minshuto or Jiminto (Liberal Democaratic Party - LDP) New Komeito (New Clean Government Party) Komeito was formed in 1964 as the political wing of Soka Gakkai, an organization affiliated with Nichiren Buddhism. The party lacked support due to its strong connection with religion until it officially severed the link in the 1970's. Komeito went on to become a mainstay of centrist politics. The party merged with the New Peace Party in 1998. While established to promote international peace, support social welfare and eliminate political corruption, recent years have seen the party move closer to the more conservative policies of the LDP. This helped the party enter government in a coalition with the LDP and Hoshuto. Currently led by Kanzaki Takenori.

    Political Parties in Japan
Most part of this page is an excerpt from Japan: A Pocket Guide, 1996 Edition , pp.12-18 (Foreign Press Center). Additional notes were written around 1998 by MK . Japanese political situation has been dynamically changed since then. The first political party to emerge in Japan was the Aikoku Koto (Public Party of Patriots), formed in 1874 under the leadership of Taisuke Itagaki. The party presented a written petition advocating the establishment of a parliamentary system through public elections. In 1898 a cabinet was formed by the leader of a party for the first time, inaugurating the system of party cabinets. But genro , or elder statesmen, although lacking any constitutional authority, exerted a decisive influence in determining transfers of power, and it was not until after World War II that true party cabinets began to be formed. Currently Japanese political alignments are undergoing a vigorous transition that has resulted in the emergence of a number of new parties. The following traces the development of the main parties.
    The Liberal Democratic Party
The Liberal Democratic Party, the biggest political party, is a conservative force. The party regards the protection of liberty, human rights, democracy, and the parliamentary system as its fundamental mission. The LDP was formed in November 1955 through the merger of two conservative parties founded after World War II and continued to govern without a break until August 1993.

    http://www.ici.ro/romania/politics/p_life.html
    POLITICAL LIFE
The collapse of Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorial regime in 1989 was received by the whole population with immense relief and great hope. But the legacy of four and a half decades of communist regime, the burdensome legacy of Ceausescu's arbitrary rule and megalomania, as well as the resistance put up by the old structures and mentalities, proved to be much stronger than politicians and analysts in the country and abroad had imagined in the first europhoric months of freedom.
The period of transition has proved to be much more difficult and painfil than it appeared to be in the beginning.
Having lived for decades, beginning with 1948, under the dictatorship of the sole party (the Romanian Communist Party), after 1989 Romania suddenly saw more than 150 political parties mushrooming. That situation was generated by the generous regulation adopted by the new authorities in 1990 according to which a new political party needed only 250 signatures for registration with the court of law. The principle of political pluralism was included in the new Constitution adopted in 1991 (Art. 3).
Typical of Romania was the refoundation, shortly after the collapse of the Ceausescu regime, of the two historical parties which had dominated the interwar political life-the National Peasant Party and the National Liberal Party-, which were outlawed by the communist regime in 1947, as well as the establishment of a party according to ethnic criteria: the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The life of the new political parties has been marked by frequent splits and re-margers, specially in the case of the National Salvation Front (FSN) and of the National Liberal Party (PNL).

Statement of the Political Bureau of Kurdistan Communist Party - Iraq
    Solidarity with the Palestinian People
The extremist Israeli government has escalated its bloody campaign of terror against the Palestinian people and their National Authority following the hysterical and aggressive decision taken by the butcher Sharon to expand the military operations with the aim of crushing the courageous Palestinian uprising, sabotaging the efforts for a just solution and attacking the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people. Sharon has exploited the bias of the US administration and its support for Israel, the silence of the international community and Arab regimes’ impotence and failure to put an end to Israeli aggressive policy. The barbaric Israeli behaviour can only lead to further deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, creating a climate of war and threatening the security and peace of all peoples in the region and the world. The Kurdistan Communist Party - Iraq, while condemning the criminal military operations which have claimed until now the lives of hundreds of martyrs, with thousands more people injured, as well as the destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and houses of innocent civilians, calls upon all the forces of freedom, peace and progress, the world public opinion and the international community to confront Sharon and his government and force them to halt immediately the ongoing criminal military operations and return to the negotiation table. We also call for extending all forms of solidarity with the Palestinian people and their National Authority, supporting their courageous uprising and their just right to establish their independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Statement of the Political Bureau of the Iraqi Communist Party Stop Sharon’s Massacres Against the Heroic Palestinian People The Israeli forces are continuing their criminal acts against the heroes of the Uprising (the Intifadah ) and the Palestinian people, and against the Palestinian National Authority and its Chairman, with the aim of silencing the voice of truth, and the just demand for establishing the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. This grave escalation which began early this morning, following the hysterical decision taken by the butcher Sharon and his criminal clique, demonstrates the clear failure of his policy which is hostile to peace and international legitimacy, and the failure of his hollow promises to provide security for Israelis at the expense of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. As a result of the criminal military acts committed by the Israeli government and forces, hundreds of people have been killed and injured, and many installations and homes of innocent civilians have been destroyed. These acts have also opened the door for an endless cycle of acts of retaliation and counter-retaliation, thus threatening the security and peace of all peoples of the region and the world. We call upon all freedom and peace-loving people in the world, and the peoples of our Arab countries and their patriotic forces, to stand against the new wave of evil led by Sharon and his fascist ruling team, and to express solidarity, in all effective forms, with the struggle of the Palestinian people, their courageous uprising (the

Simultaneously with sexual prostitution and corruption, chronic political prostitution spreads in the U.S. ruling circles. Since Hillary Clinton was elected congresswoman (sic) for the state of New York, she has been practicing a kind of political prostitution that is even worse than her husband's sexual debauchery." For many, this will be their first taste of protest politics, of militant direct action. The deeply undemocratic nature of the British political character stands exposed and thousands are starting to question the nature of a system that can produce the horrors that are being planned against Iraq and other countries, that can produce such disgustingly hypocritical politicians as Blair. If you are reading this section of our website, you are likely to be one of these people. Perhaps you are a comrade starting to think of yourself as a communist - not a small step to take in a country like Britain. Believing in communism means taking the practical steps that bring it into existence. It means getting active, organising with other communists, working for our politics as part of a fighting collective. There is no such thing as an 'armchair communist'.
