Thaw in the Cold War: Eisenhower and Khrushchev at Gettysburg (Eisenhower National Historic Site) P erhaps a change of scene would make a difference. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Nikita Khrushchev, opposing leaders of the United States (U.S.) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) at the height of the Cold War in 1959, had reached an impasse. Even at the informal setting of Camp David, with occasional escapes from the intrusive protocol and ever present advisers, the leaders were making little progress in their effort to lessen the tensions. As he and Khrushchev boarded the helicopter for the short flight from Camp David to the president's Gettysburg, Pennsylvania farm, Eisenhower hoped that the quiet, rural atmosphere would have the intended effect on Khrushchev. Eisenhower always found the farm "an oasis of relaxation." He and his wife, Mamie, purchased the farm in 1950; it was the only home the Eisenhowers ever owned. Though originally intended as a retirement home, it also served as a weekend retreat after Eisenhower's 1952 election to the presidency. The Eisenhowers especially enjoyed the glassed-in porch where they entertained family and friends, played cards, read, and watched television. Eisenhower also pursued his hobby of oil painting on the porch. He once wrote that if they ever built another home "it would be built around such a porch." On adjoining farms, Eisenhower raised his prize-winning herd of Angus cattle. Sharing this private side of his life with world leaders had proved beneficial for Eisenhower when he met with allies of the United States, including West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. But would it work, he wondered, with his Cold War adversary? As they landed at the edge of the farm field in front of his home, he hoped this private meeting with Khrushchev would move the world toward peace.

A Pentagon analyst, private detective and labor union official were arrested over the weekend after offering to sell U.S. military secrets to an FBI agent they believed was a South African communist, officials said. They were charged Monday in an Alexandria, Virginia, federal court with conspiracy to commit espionage. They were ordered held without bail until a preliminary hearing Thursday. The husband-and-wife spy team of Kurt Alan Stand , 42, and Theresa Marie Squillacote , 39, was believed to have been motivated by Marxist ideology, an FBI spokesman told reporters. Squillacote worked in the Pentagon as an attorney and for the House Armed Services Committee. Stand worked for a union representing food, hotel and other workers. The third alleged spy is private detective James Clark , 49. All three live in the Washington, D.C., area.

Revelations from the Russian Archives COLD WAR: CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS According to Nikita Khrushchev's memoirs, in May 1962 he conceived the idea of placing intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Cuba as a means of countering an emerging lead of the United States in developing and deploying strategic missiles. He also presented the scheme as a means of protecting Cuba from another United States-sponsored invasion, such as the failed attempt at the Bay of Pigs in 1961. After obtaining Fidel Castro's approval, the Soviet Union worked quickly and secretly to build missile installations in Cuba. On October 16, President John Kennedy was shown reconnaissance photographs of Soviet missile installations under construction in Cuba. After seven days of guarded and intense debate in the United States administration, during which Soviet diplomats denied that installations for offensive missiles were being built in Cuba, President Kennedy, in a televised address on October 22, announced the discovery of the installations and proclaimed that any nuclear missile attack from Cuba would be regarded as an attack by the Soviet Union and would be responded to accordingly. He also imposed a naval quarantine on Cuba to prevent further Soviet shipments of offensive military weapons from arriving there. Tishler, Producer Lecture 23 The Cold War and the "Hot Economy:" the 1950s In the immediate aftermath of World War II, the United States took a turn to the economic and political right. Nothing demonstrated this shift more than the Second Red Scare. The trials, denouncements, black lists, and paranoia about Communism in the Second Red Scare showed the domestic face of the Cold Warthe international struggle between the Soviet Union and the United States for world dominance. This lecture traces how the Cold War transformed anti-Communism from a right-wing to a mainstream ideology. Some questions to keep in mind: Compare and contrast the development of political ideologies in the post-WWII era to those of the Depression era, concentrating on the attitudes of Americans toward Communism. Compare the events, justifications, and results of the Second Red Scare to those of the First Red Scare. Who supported Joe McCarthy and why? The Cold War Contemporary Context: During the Second World War, the Western democracies had not been entirely comfortable about allying themselves with Stalinist Russia, and it didn't take long for this awkward partnership to fall apart. Over the next few years, the Soviets imposed Communist regimes in its post-war occupation zones in East Europe and North Korea. In China, the end of civil war brought a huge slice of the human population under Communist control, and mass execution of politcal opponents followed. As the 1940s progressed, the West decided to form a system of defensive alliances to prevent any further spread of Communism. The Organization of American States was founded in 1945 to coordinate the foreign policy of the Western Hemisphere, while all the principle nations of West Europe and North America were joined into the the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (N ATO in 1947. Across the south of Asia, two more American alliance systems, C ENTO Central Treaty Organization ) and S EATO Southeast Asia Treaty Organization ), were established to contain possible Soviet expansion southward. It is winter, early in 1969. Men have not yet walked on the moon. The Cold War is hot in Viet Nam. Sabers are ratteling throughout the world. Submarines are going about their silent business throughout the oceans of the world. This is a picture of the Jackson when I reported aboard her in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard right after I completed Sub School. This was My first boat after serving on two surface craft and completing electronics and nuclear power schools. She was in the shipyard undergoing a major overhaul including replacing the reactor core and conforming some of the systems to subsafe.The down side was that a submarine is not a submarine when tied to the pier. The best part was being aboard during system changes and installations, sea trials, transits, missile shots, and becoming a qualified submariner.
