Welcome to Cage Birds!
European Goldfinches courtesy of Daniel Maldonado What is a bird?
Birds are defined as homeothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates with two pairs of limbs based on a pentadactyl pattern. The front limbs are modified to form wings. The body is covered by feathers except over the legs and feet, where reptilian type scales exist, and over the face which is often ornamental skin. What is a bird? Birds are my companions and my friends. I wake to their songs and their chattering each morning and many days they give me the strength and the reason to get out of bed and carry on with my day. They have taught me about love and bonding and have taught me how to play again. Birds, whether my own companion birds, or the hummingbirds I see outside my window, allow me to communicate with other peopleand make new friends in a way I could not do before.

COCKATIELS
Relatives to Parrots and Cockatoo, the Cockatiel ( Nymphicus hollandicus ) is native from Australia and was described for the first time in 1792. They had arrived at the European continent, brought by expeditions, in the year 1840. At the present, together with its "cousins", the Budgies ( Melopsittacus undulatus ), these birds are the most created in the world. Easy to create and long life (in average 18 years, since that well taken care of), the Cockatiel is recommended for who desires to have a beautiful bird without work.
In their natural habitat, the Cockatiel lives in colonies and likes to build its nest in dead trees. They are found near to rivers and waterfalls and theirs migrations are controlled by the cycle of the waters
Through selected crossings, starting of the yellow-silver original coloration, at present we find several standards of coloring, between them cinnamon, pied and pearl mutations. Training Cockatiel requires much patience and not every bird learns, however the results are rewarded with beautiful whistles and repetition of some music.

Cockatiels for DUMMIES
Wow! This is an excellent book! I bought this book because I'm getting a cockatiel for my birthday. I knew absolutely nothing about them. I got so frustrated because I didn't think I could take care of a bird and started rethinking my decision to get one. That is, until I read this book. Now I am so confident and feel so knowledgeable because this book really explained everything in plain old every day English. It was so easy to understand it even made me feel like I can even breed them! That's how confident I was when I got finished reading this book. Thanks, Diane for the very good information and all your knowledge!
A wonderful, informative and entertaining book

Everything we learn is from trial and error. We have been interested in and kept birds for over 10yrs as a hobby. We also have a lot of books and asked a lot of people questions and  still do. I don't think I'll ever know too much on the subject when it comes to aviculture. All I can really suggest is if you found a way that works for you stick to it don't start messing round this could only lead to problems. This is something we do for fun and we enjoy Parrots. We have a good Supply of calcium for our birds.

Ribbon. This little gal needs more attention. She will sit on shoulders, preen ears, dance on fingers and give kisses. She is jealous of the pairs and makes no effort to conceal her envy. She needs to be someone’s girlfriend, or in a home where she gets all the attention. Sunshine. She’s three, and has no desire to be around the other tiels. She isn’t aggressive, just wanders off, on her own! She is a shoulder sitter, and she does her best to whistle! She’s laid a couple infertile eggs. What she needs is a one bird home - with her being that bird! I Love My Birds! Available Lovebirds Lovebirds I'm Keeping ] [Available Cockatiels] [ Ribbon Sunshine Cockatiels I'm Keeping Information

Zipper and Pearl. These two have had a nest box, but so far, only non-fertile eggs. Zipper was the very first bird - and I enjoyed him so much, well, guess my flock just kept on growing! He can be cranky - since he’s so spoiled, but he really is a sweetheart underneath. When Pearl first arrived she was timid and shy. Forget all that now. She’s demanding and bossy - and loves to be out of the cage. Rose. She bit me so hard when she first arrived, I thought I’d never try to be friendly with her again. And she was so frightened I thought she’d have a stroke if I went to close to her cage! Well now she steps up, wants out, and demands attention! This bird is, by far, the most beautiful in this house. Bows. He and Rose just recently became a twosome and are currently incubating eggs. Bows has come a long way. He had some problems with trust and it took me over a year to prove myself to him. He doesn’t really want to be a finger sitter, but he will whistle and chatter - and sit on top of his cage for hours without trying to sneak off. Lace. She’s on the first page. Her cinnamon markings are awesome. She is as spoiled as my lovebird, King Arthur, since she’s without a partner. She loves having her head scratched and prefers the blow dryer to the misting!

A clear cage, a perch of various widths, and lots of toys: some finches have it made!
Figure A
Figure B
The bright-yellow canary (left) always has a happy song to brighten your day.
Birds make great pets, and some breeds are particularly appealing to novice owners. The canary is a cheery bird with a lovely song. Discovered by the Spanish in the Canary Islands, off the northwest coast of Africa, wild canaries were olive-and-brown-striped with yellow head, rump and breast the recognizable yellow canary was developed in captivity. Another excellent pet bird is the finch; a variety of finch breeds are available, including the popular zebra finch, which has a striped tail and in the male, at least chestnut cheek patches and a red beak ( figure A Many owners prefer keeping their finches in clear cages rather than in the more traditional wire cages; a large glass aquarium with a wire cover makes an excellent home for small birds. One added bonus: keeping your birds in a glass tank prevents the messy scattered birdseed so common with birds kept in cages. There are a couple of items you should use to furnish your finch's home: cuttlebone (which is good for beaks and provides trace minerals such as calcium and phosphorous) and millet (which finches love to eat). It's a good idea to have a perch of varying diameters so the different muscles in your bird's feet will get toned and exercised. Birds are very playful animals, so toys are also a good addition to a brid's home.

One of the most expressive hookbills is the cockatiel. Not only is the cockatiel considered sweet natured by many bird enthusiasts but it is one of the few small hookbills with a crest of feathers on top of its head which can be raised or lowered to display how the bird is feeling at any given moment. Cockatiels are usually gentle and affectionate toward their mates and those who care for them. This breeding pair of cockatiels greet me enthusiastically anytime I approach their aviary. They call and fly to me seeking attention. The resting cockatiel in the artwork is called the cinnamon pearl variety, due to the light colored, delicate lace pattern on its feathers. The landing cockatiel is a lutino, which is found in shades of yellow and white. Lutinos retain their orange ear patches, but lack all traces of dark feather coloration. These birds are shown nesting in a hollow tree among their native Australian wildflowers. Kaleidoflight - Series I: Budgerigars Golden Mantled Rosellas About the Artist ... madrun@toolcity.net
